The first three episodes of Book 3 air from 7:00-8:30PM EDT Friday, June 27. :siren:

SpiderHyphenMan opted out of making the thread this year, so as part of my dark ritual to gain power by being the OP of all the worst TVIV threads, I stepped up. For those of you who are just now hearing about it, this latest season of everyone's favorite children's television program is getting dumped on us rather unceremoniously, likely due to huge leaks (four episodes, in Spanish!). They're airing three episodes tomorrow (and none the week after to compensate) and only announced it a week ago. So sudden was this I couldn't even find a good promo pic for this season because there weren't any.

If you missed last season, let me bring you up to speed:

Korra continued her streak of being a brash idiot
Mako was the bestest police officer there ever was

A pretty good two-parter which the titular character was almost totally absent from
Studio Pierrot filled in for the middle of the season when Studio Mir left to work on The Boondocks. Let's see how they did:

For some reason, Pierrot isn't working on this season. Huh.

All joking aside, I wasn't too hot on last season. I'm honestly pretty zen about this next one, though. I haven't watched any of the leaks, so all I've seen of this season is the one trailer they put out two weeks ago. That trailer is beautiful, but I'm not too sure about some of the directions they seem to be taking the story. I'm gonna keep my optimism cutious for now because this show has burned me before. I'm not going to bother getting excited but I'll at least remain open to the prospect.

I really liked that! I have a few minor nitpicks (starting the main plot of the whole season with Bumi's airbending before we're reintroduced to the rest of the setting is a really weird pacing decision, they don't really do all that much with the spirits, the Dai Li plot feels kinda tired after the original series, especially because it primarily involves Kai, who we just met and I didn't particularly care for), but on the whole I thought that was a pretty good opening. The villains particularly were really interesting and visually dynamic in a way that rivals some of the best from TLA, even, though not seeing them in the third episode was a bit of a let-down. I thought the water tentacles seemed really dumb when I first saw that picture but in motion it's just fantastic. Even Mako had some good moments when he was alone with Bolin. I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment but I definitely enjoyed that.

It's a burnoff. They released the first three with next to no marketing after a week's notice and are then airing two a week for four weeks. That's not how you treat a show you want to keep around.

I don't care about "advancements in bending" or whatever because it reeked of power creep. It felt like a way to make the villain immediately threatening by tying them back to a super technique from the original series except he's way better at it because he's superspecial! It retroactively lessened the significance of the original episode while actually making the villain far less interesting in several ways, while being boring as poo poo to actually watch because he didn't even need to move to do it.

It's not that it didn't make logical sense, it's that it was boring, and boring in a lot of ways. It didn't make sense as a narrative choice.

The most frustrating thing about Mako's plot is that it would have been so much more palatable if Lin was aware that there was corruption and secretly acting to ferret it out, which gives a reason for her to be obstructing Mako openly but allows her to get a non-stupid thing later on. If Korra was gonna come out of the closet, she should have had scenes of being in the closet for the past three seasons, or else yes, this poo poo will overshadow everything else.
