No. I honestly haven't come to a conclusion that any of the schools are bad. Some are probably better at 1v1 than others, but none of them seem to actually be bad.

While you're killing enemies you get items like Snokeweed (seriously) which is "used for level 30 potion crafting", what that means is you go to yoru crafter of choice, tell him to slap you so you learn a level of crafting, and tell him to slap you so you learn another, and another and watnot. Your level of crafting can be equal to YourLevel/10 (so level 30 = level 3 crafting) which makes level 30 potions, so you get the dude to slap you again so you learn the individual recipe up to level 5. Level 6 to 9 you have to go to the guild and have THEM teach you.

The hidden thing is crafting is REALLY REALLY expensive. Level 1 crafting to 2, not a big deal, like 20 silver. Level 2 to 3, not a big deal, like 50 silver. level 3 to 4, kinda a big deal, 1 gold. Each recipe also costs around the same amount it took to level it up, so if you want to take potionmaking and cooking (yes you do) it's 4 gold to get to level 5 in each, and 6 gold for your potionmaking and cooking ingredients, and that's a shitload.

This game however ALSO has unbound and bound liang (Silver coin vs silver note, silver note being bound)

If you make a potion and you want it to be an unbound potion, you have to pay for it with silver coin. How do you get silver coin?

We have 0 clue, the only way we found coins was by bamboo dreams, and that was a low low amount of money so nobody has a clue.

The interesting thing too is it may not be worthwhile to craft potions or food anyway, since you can just buy them (at least up to level 4) so MAYBE crafting is worthwhile?

But no, example to answer the question. If you want to make a sword, you go out there to the battlefield, kill like 20 crocodiles, take 20 crocodile teeth and make them into a sword, and glue the teeth together with the silver coins melted down. Because you used silver coins you can also then give the toothsword to someone else. To upgrade the sword from +0 to +1 you take OTHER equipment like pants you found on the crocodile, and melt them into the toothsword to give the toothsword experience, the pants you get MUST ALSO be unbound or it becomes bound to you so it's probably better to just sell it to the dude and tell him to upgrade it.

The thing about crafting is that while <Willow Branch> or whatever drops pretty commonly, it doesn't tell you where it drops. Your child slave will happily run along behind you picking things up to shove in your materials bag, but it may not be the things you need, and there don't seem to be resource nodes of any kind so if <Not Speaking Up Taoist> drops <Willow Branch>, prepare to grind there for a bit. I guess you can just turn on the game auto-botting system, I never tried that much.

Bag space is another thing - you make 6 slot bags by combining two 5 slot bags, and so forth. I think I came across 4 5 slot bags going to 40, so that may be an issue.

While there may not be REs, there is some kind of an affection system - you can do a bunch of easy quests for a few people to get items that either improve affection with them, or help on an escort quests I was never around to do.

I did some auto-grinding at one point, and got tons of specific materials. I think figuring out what mob drops what you need, and blacklisting the garbage pickups is the way to go.

Also dropped 10bux on the early access, hopefully we can get the guild ready to slam n' jam on the offical OB date.

I think the beta server was routing to texas so I doubt you'll get east/west servers. Also the game uses dynamic instancing with tech like Neverwinters so they could have a single server for everyone. The closed beta servers didnt really feel taxed despite every scene being jammed packed with people.

i know it looks like this is Wushu second coming and that everything is going to be perfect but lets not get overhyped. Perfect world has run many other mmo as pure cashgrab before and there is no reason for them to stop. Luckily for this game they understand the west gaming culture and infrastructure better than Snail, but that may be a boon as much as a curse. If you look at the official forums, carebears and highsec miners are already clamoring for PVE and PVP servers division.

For all its poor decision, mismanagement, P2W, poo poo ui, goofy translation and horrible ping, AOW is pleasantly different than the themepark mmo EQ and WoW defined and kept in popularity, something nothing in the "AA" arena outside of EVE and the upcoming Archeage seem to offer

I fear that the price for stability and a more polished game will be the lack of innovation from the usual mmo model, a model i personally cant stand anymore. I did the 1-35 part during CBT on a sun and moon and on a Harmony and it was very boring, the game playing like a html website where you just have to click on quest links. Once i could do PVP any opportunity to do so outside arena saw me ganked by whiteknights nobly avenging whatever pubbies i killed, unlike AoW where unless you go heavy with AOE to piss off people nobody outside the target guild care.

For crafting the absence of bench to limit production is a non issue. All MMO with crafting put a "rare" component in its higher recipes to prevent market flooding. You might not need a bench, but that "jade tear" you need as a material might take 20 hour of grinding to drop, or only drop from event boss for extra fun.

I read that more interesting options open once you get past 35, but having to slog trough a mile of swamp to get to a nice place is not a plus in my book.

Eh I don't think anyone is getting overly hyped about this since aside from like 4 people we've all played the beta. You can get to max class level in a few days of casual play and get to all the factionless stuff. It's not like wushu didn't take weeks of cultivating before you could even begin to think about doing anything with other players.

Third World Reagan

Not snail games isn't really a high bar and isn't really hype.

Also to get to 35 or past it isn't that long. about 4-6 hours to get to 35 and then another 4 or so to get to 40 if you are in a guild.

This is a paltry sum.

Cao Ni Ma
May 25, 2010

It takes like 5 hours to get to the thirties in this game. 5 hours in AoW got you like 3 levels into your first school internal.

Also AoW has been turning less and less sandboxy with each patch. Right now most of the content people are going trough are pve weather events (that are on a set, predictable schedule) and faction grind (which is an entire WoW esque daily quest grind for rep). A lot of the "sandbox" elements in the game have been abandoned by the player base because they are busy going on the new rides or simply because Snail ineptitude has rendered them horribly unfun and/or unrewarding.

Jesus christ thank you. If I find an MMO I like, then I probably already spend a bunch of time on it, I don't need to have my arm twisted and more to play more like Wushu eventually got to.

The only real difference between the early grind in this game and the early grind in Wushu is that in Swordsman you have to do more clicking and look at the screen more. And there is no team practice. As far as crafting not being worth it, that's probably true before level 50, since 1-50 is too quick to want to spend so much of your bound money on level 30-40 items. I don't think the closed beta lasted long enough to come to any real conclusions, though. If crafting has recipes for better potions or food items than you can buy from the vendors, it'll definitely be worth someone learning it. Just not sure yet whether those recipes exist. The POTIONS exist, though.

No, need to worry about that. First, it seems the majority of the mobs in an area of a specific level drop crafting items of that level range. So almost all of the enemies in the Shaolin area drop level 3 crafting drops. Second the Bosom Friend quests occasionally have you collecting mats and they'll give you a list of every mob that drops that mat, so we can get lists of what drops what pretty fast.

...I have no idea. The first treasure map I did made me play bejeweled, but I won, and got a reward for that. Maybe you missed something? It also might have been a bug, since it WAS beta, and the shifting sand maps were level 40, so not everyone would have reached them yet.
