Also worth watching for: OGE's gimmick (aside from wedging buses and winning the first week's plaudits before buggering off.) It appears I've got the day off after the queen stage so I'm happy about that.

I think it came when they increased the number of intermediate sprints or something. Didn't the Giro have an extra points competition (not to be confused with the combination) which was basically based on stage finishes only or something? (It doesn't anymore as far as I know.)

Heinrich Haussler (IAM) won the Australian road race championship. Caleb Ewan 2nd, made a nice move on the last climb about 10km out but Haussler hauled him in at the final sprint. I'm not sure what OGE's plans for him this year but I guess we might see him in a few classics to learn the ropes since he's still pretty young. (Gerrans was out injured after he buggered his shoulder before Xmas.) Porte the national TT champion.

MTN usually get a few invites in the calendar, Ciolek won the MSR a couple of years back during those insanely cold conditions. They also have Matty Goss and Daniel Teklehaymanot who is a pretty useful domestique.

It was mainly an Aussie-fest. Rohan Dennis won it by 2s from Roomie (although Froome nearly caught him by winning the Old Willunga stage by 9s or something). Cuddles' last race is actually next weekend in his own one-day event (it basically covers Geelong, Torquay and his hometown Barwon Heads). It's a UCI 1.1 tour event, I think the idea is to establish it so it attracts one-day specialists and give teams another reason to hang around after the TDU. The Herald-Sun Tour's run February 4-8. Similar courses to last year. A prologue and four stages about 120-150km around Melbourne. Arthur's Seat is the last stage and is quite a steep hill. I think there's the Tours of Qatar and Oman later in the month.

Interesting race to watch, anyway, a few world teams mixing with locals (which are usually used to limited traffic control). I'm not sure this is the exact same route as the Worlds a few years back but the final circuit has an interesting profile.

That one lane bridge is a bit  but generally I liked the course.I think the intent was to make the parcours resemble a good classic; there's a bit of debate about whether to push to make it a World Tour event (it's currently UCI 1.1) but the niche it's in isn't a bad one, you'll get a few World teams showing up for it since it sits neatly between the TDU and the Herald-Sun Tour but it also gives a good opportunity for continental and NRS teams to get some time in the spotlight as well. A broader issue is whether the Australian schedule is too early in the year for the major teams. The TDU is when it is because it's usually the last week of the Australian school holidays, which makes things a bit easier for travelling fans and traffic arrangements, but usually it's stupidly loving hot here in January (this year has been fairly unusual in that it wasn't so), so there's a bit of a dilemma about weighing up about moving things later so it's closer to the European spring classics. Alternatively everyone lets Porte win the next stage by exactly 2 minutes. Have the peleton pull up just short of the line, let Richie go ahead, and then watch the timeclock. I'm not a huge fan of Sky but this is pretty dumb, especially since Porte lost a heap of time already.
