I played too much mtg to care about hearthstone

It's loving f2p, makes use of mechanics that are unwieldy for live games, and most importantly I don't have to be at the same table as the mtg neckbeards that troll this thread.

That said the fact that there's not any new cards or classes cooled my playing down to an arena a month and however many matches it takes to get the monthly cardback. same except I didn't give blizzard any money for it

Scyther that is a good image. Also the idea of a game that is basically a CCG, only you don't get physical things to C is just weird to me. I just assume they try and price poo poo out like WoTC does though, if it isn't some weird scheme to make nerds spend a million dollars I'm more ok with it but probably will still just play core magic with my brother using that free deck builder/player thing.

yeah... the game definitely needs new cards to come out...

surc posted:Scyther that is a good image. It's really not that bad, especially considering how TCG are normally (I.e paying $4 for a booster in Magic online) As long as you don't need a sperg deck with all the rarest cards (you don't) then you get plenty of gold from just playing. The most expensive thing you can buy with gold is an arena ticket that nets you prizes the better you are at the game plus a pack automatically and you can afford one by winning like 3 8 minute games for two days. [e] For comparison Magic's online draft costs about $14 and you can't earn that in any way in-game DrManiac fucked around with this message at 02:59 on Jun 30, 2014 |

Might and Magic: Duel of Champions is pretty good for a F2P card game. It's more dynamic than Hearthstone and it has surprisingly deep gameplay. The interface is confusing as poo poo though, and I still don't really understand how to make a deck, so I've just been using the pre-built decks you can unlock and playing them against friends and random scrubs online. It can take loving forever to play though.

Adventure mode looks like it might be cool but lol if that 4000 gold cost is real, that's forty USA credits and I can kickstart a better board game for that kind of scratch

Magic's interface is also really lovely and obtuse. I couldn't figure it out without consulting a guide and a YouTube video. The 20XX games are better in that regard, and you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars, but the meta is even more stagnant than Hearthstone. Hearthstone is great because it's super intuitive and someone with zero card game experience can figure it out in just a couple minutes. It's also a really lovely game to take seriously, so just play it for fun and if you don't like it you didn't spend any money anyway.

I kinda wish there was better pve stuff in the game too.

"fun" is not a useful or objective measure of quality.

I really like hearthstone, I've just been too busy with other things lately. I just remembered the season ends in a couple hours though, so I just now blasted through the three games I needed to get the card back. I should really play it more regularly, it's pretty exciting and fun.

nope. whew, very ungood. you shouldn't play card games for the same reason you shouldn't watch really nasty porn: you need worse and worse till someday you find yourself playing some star wars CG that's twenty years out of print and takes four and a half hours to play a game of. dont chase the dragon peeps. just let it go.

You don't have to enjoy dominion to recognize that it is objectively a very good game.

dominion is basically multiplayer solitaire. the vast majority of turns could be played in separate rooms with no communication at all. it's fun, i enjoy solitaire, and it's great with people who don't care for conflict because it doesn't make them feel threatened. but there is an issue with it: whoever fills their deck with the most useless crap without it weighing them down too much wins. there's friction there so that's good, but it basically means the means of play are entirely disconnected from - indeed, deliberately at odds with - the means of victory. now netrunner on the other hand, that's a game where you can tell what is happening and who is winning at a glance of the board. it is a perfect visualisation of the game state. every single action you do is simultaneously meaningful in world and in game. if you write down what the players do you end up with a piece of cyberpunk fiction. that's a very good game right there.

i did not play decipher star wars, but i did see the cards at a store and it was my first exposure to the phenomenon of the most incidental star wars character given ridiculous lore. like i distinctly remember some bullshit droid who was in one shot for a fraction of a second in the jawa sandcrawler scene and he had a card that said he was like some kind of super important rebel droid or something? i don't get it man. i don't get it. i don't get why this is. i turned my nose up at this nonsense and asked the store clerk for a booster pack of magic: ice age.

I had a lot of fun with Vampire: The Eternal Struggle during my more rotund grognard days. I had someone build me a deck and a game would take like 2 hours to finish (we'd play with 6+ people) but it was always a good time. That's a genuinely fun card game but you do have to deal with people who like Vampire: The Masquerade. You also need a bunch of people because 2 player games are boring.
