It's typical short-term thinking in order to win the next election rather than trying to actually change your country for the better. I don't know if there's ever a term limit that's "balanced", and this isn't an argument for totalitarianism, but it's basically an infinite campaign season where poo poo never gets done because as soon as you get elected, the first thing you do is to start pandering to your constituency to win the next election. Which would be great if the constituency was in favor of nice things, but jfc the Tea Party.

I think it's not all that useful comparing the current opinion people have on Obama with their opinions they now hold years after the fact regarding other presidents. For all we know they might just as well mellow out in their attitude towards Obama depending on who the next president becomes. [Also full disclosure, as a filthy foreigner I think the worst president was Truman closely followed by Clinton. Obama is merely in the running for third.]

The TV show "The Tyrant" is about an Arab man who works in America as a successful Paediatrician before reluctantly returning home to his family who are the ruling dynasty of a Middle Eastern Nation. He is slowly seduced by the evils of absolute power. The man's name? Barry.

You might want to look at Reagan's foreign policy re: South America, the Middle East, water rights everywhere and his drastic increase in defense spending that heated up the Cold War among other things. I mean its really nice that Germany got reunited later on but its probably not the only metric to judge his foreign policy by.

Yeah, I mean the United States government spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the 50s exporting its businesses and culture wherever it could (which makes the whole idea of free market no government business hilarious) including its racial politics, so to think that American domestic policy has no impact on people's lives outside the US is nuts. Also I'm sure someone has mentioned this but sitting presidents are always the worst president. Remember when Bush II compared himself to Truman because they had similar approval ratings while in office? Yeah.

Dunno, the Reagan:Thatcher power couple did screw the world pretty indiscriminately with their policies. They should be considered as worthy additions to any worst leader group no matter where you're from. They did work hard to earn it, after all. It would be unrespectful not to include that pair of fuckers. Obama is just an American centrist (that is, a rightward corporatist anywhere else) that has a rabid opposition trying to undermine his every single step. I'm wondering if this is just perception bias on my part, but is the increased polarization of voters on approval of the current President a thing? It seems like irrespective of how they do their jobs, any future presidents will face almost immediate disapproval from the opposing party.

The polarization of voters comes and goes in American history. It's not any worse than it was in post-Civil War America, or just after WW2, or in the 60s, or now. Different, sure, but not worse.

Think of how much you remember from what you personally did 10 years ago or so, compared to what you remember from a year ago or a few months ago. It's a pretty drat big difference. Now apply that to remembering what someone else did and you'll realize why these kinds of polls will always lean towards the sitting president pretty heavily.

AshB posted:So two-thirds of your rationale is literally things the President cannot control or reasonably be expected to. There are things he could be doing though to try and change that. Going out and actively pointing out the things that the opposition is doing in their districts, rallying the voters that do support him and pointing out the flaws in what the deadlocked congress is doing. He's the president, people will listen to him, and if he could whip up the chunk of the population that is either apathetic to politics or the D's in very red districts, or hell, even the moderate R's to point out that everything he is trying to do is being stymied by a small group of people, he could be actually passing things. The problem is that there is only a very small sect of the population that realizes that the issue isn't with Obama himself, but the deadlocked congress. If more of the people knew that everything that is trying to be done is being blocked on the concept of it alone, there's a better chance of poo poo Getting Done. Instead, he lets most of the american people believe that he's the one at fault. I'm not a huge fan of Obama, simply because he really hasn't done anything. If it wasn't for the fact that he was the first black president, he'd be remembered about as well as Ford - a not terrible president, a not outstanding president, and overall a fairly ho-hum guy. He's certainly better than any of his opposition, but he hasn't done anything to help himself. Even when the government was shut down, the average person thought it was Obama's fault, because the only media coming out that pointed out that the only reason the government was shut down was because of a bunch of republican reps that dug their heels in and play ball was the news. A few primetime pressers would have changed that.

This is of course a counter-factual, but it's not a stretch to imagine that Obama and his staff already considered trying to hit back (and I mean that in any possible sense, not necessarily an aggressive response) and figured that that would just further reinforce the right's depiction of him as an 'imperial' President.

CaptainCarrot posted:It's so cute that you think more than about five people in the Republican caucus give a poo poo about what anyone who isn't a Teaper thinks. The republican caucus will care when that sweet donor money dries up because the fact that they're being run by the batshit caucus becomes really well known to people who aren't politically involved. It's a small minority of people who are Tea Party types, and they have overrun the party because they shout the loudest. Getting people who just write the same check every year to support a candidate without ever looking at what/who they're supporting to notice that their previously moderate rep is now way right wing because otherwise he'll be primaried from the right is a good way to stop that money from coming in. And Obama has done a lot. So did Ford. Ford put through the Equal Rights Ammendment. Ford made sure draft dodgers weren't punished. Ford pulled out what was left of the troops in Vietnam. But no one gives a gently caress or remembers Ford. There are actually a lot similarities between Ford and Obama in that both faced strong opposition from congress who refused to pass stuff that he wanted, and overrode vetoes of things he didn't, inhereted a war no one wanted and did his best to clean up the mess, inhereted the crappiest economy to date, and tried to do what they could to support every American. Neither is a poo poo president. Both did accomplish stuff. But what they accomplished is largely going to be forgotten as time marches on.
