Naming your single the same thing as another rappers single is the most passive-aggressive diss I've ever seen. It took Drake 2 years to respond to this and Wayne hopes everyone forgets about this.

Cormega released Mega Philosophy last month. I've liked every song I've heard on there but I haven't heard it all. He features one of my top 3 favorite rappers Black Rob on Home. The song is about 2 minutes long and only has 2 verses.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4f0ccSfGX8

Other standouts are of course Industry, which may have heard and MARS (Mega, Redman, AZ, Style P), that contains 3 of my other favorite rappers. Mega has good taste.

My undisputed favorite song of the summer is Hot Nigga. He's so young and meancing. It isn't Shook Ones but it will do. Noz said he was copying Chicago but I don't feel that way. He puts a little more creativity and effort in what he's saying imo.

The other song I like right now is OM by NehruvianDOOM. Bishop Nehru is boring but he has some quality that holds potential. He has that cool delivery that NY is known for and is confident without posturing.

Byron Crawford of XXL blogging fame did a write-up on Mike Brown, Ferguson MO, and race issues. You don't have read it all but I've pasted the part about hiphop here.

quote:

Three days after the kid got killed, I’ve yet to hear a rap song about it. If this were 2001, some bum mixtape rapper would have at least used Mike Brown’s name as an inappropriate punchline. We’re somehow moving backwards technologically. One of the promises of all this digital technology is that rappers would be able to record protest songs in drat near real time; the same day an unarmed black man was killed by the police a rapper could record and release a song complaining about it. Instead, all we’ve got is people recording their own versions of “Hot Nigga” by Bobby Shmurda.

If that doesn’t tell you all you need to know about hip-hop circa 2014, I don’t know what would. You know who’s really a hot nigga? A black kid lying dead in the street for hours on end, in August in St. Louis. I know, I know… terrible.

I should be more upset, both with my own writing and with hip-hop, but what difference would it make? The fact of the matter is, hip-hop doesn’t speak for the black community anymore. It’s not a reflection of what we’re thinking, it’s a reflection of how white people want us to look. Go on Twitter and try to find one black kid who isn’t bitching and moaning about Ferguson. And it’s been like that all summer long. Meanwhile, what’s the rap song of the summer? “Fancy?” “Anaconda?” “Hot Nigga?” Those songs don’t effectively capture the zeitgeist.

Used to be, rap music was the CNN for black people. Now actual CNN is the CNN for black people, at least compared to rap music. 25 years ago, when all of the exact same poo poo was happening, it seems, we had “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy. Now we’ve got a guy named Peter Rosenberg on Hot 97 talking about how he’s done more for hip-hop than Chuck D ever did. This poo poo is over. It was fun while it lasted but that’s it. We sold it, and we didn’t even get enough money to move to an area where you can walk in the street without getting shot by the police. Nice neighborhoods don’t even have sidewalks. Either you walk in the street or you’d be walking on someone’s lawn. The cops hardly ever drive by, and they could give a gently caress if they did.

GET MONEY posted:

Bol's thing is pretty rambling. Isn't this Mike Brown situation getting a whole bunch of media attention? There's no coverage gap there for a Public Enemy to fill anymore, they solved the problem of getting black people issues on the news. That's a win for hip-hop! That's why actual CNN is the CNN of black people now, a protest song isn't going to accomplish more than #IfTheyGunnedMeDown.

Sadly but accurately the zeitgeist of this generation is recognizing the only way not get randomly beaten and shot and generally mistreated in 2014 American society is to get your rear end in the 1%. So that's where hip-hop lives now, somewhere between aspiration and video game level escapism. If you're still getting your social justice news from hip-hop :cmon:
The question is better phrased as why does the music only reflect one dimension of the listeners? It didn't always. What changed?

It doesn't now only reflect one dimension, looking at the whole. And as far as "mainstream" rap it's always tended more towards one dimension anyways. Dudes seriously have a skewed view of the past and what music was out and available-PE wasn't just an outlier but isn't really that different than what Kanye was doing on some songs with Yeezus. When PE was actually making good music, I think MC Hammer had the best selling rap album.
What bothers me is the energy rappers put into informing us of their gang affiliation and the price of cocaine. But they resort to passive admission of police brutality, drug abuse, and socio-economy realities. People are bored of gently caress Da Police but they are still entertained by Dopeman. Some how some way, anti-oppression themes are muted.

Forgotten song by J. Dilla

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPOKZNLhOj8

quote:

Ma Dukes
That song was totally true. He caught so much flack from the police for being a clean young man. The police department was down the street from where we lived, and every time he pulled off they’d stop him and harass him. They even tossed the car once looking for something. Because he was young and clean-cut, they thought he was selling drugs. Proof was at the house one evening when James had another run-in with them. He had only gone to the gas station which was three doors away. I told him not to get upset because he was hurt to tears. He was so angry and just tired of being harassed, so I told him, ‘Look, this is what you do: you go downstairs and make a song about it, and you laugh in their face.’ And that’s when he came up with the "F" the Police’ thing. And people are still singing it today! Every time I go somewhere, that’s one of the songs they play.

I made a prophesy about Rocky. The stars are aligning for his falling-off. The whole thing was Gucci and Chef Keef would continue to go back to jail and gently caress up their careers. Then it was Schoolboy Q and Rocky were going to brick up after a while. What started it all was Trinidad James getting signed.

LOL!

Rocky was an upsale of Lil B. Now that basegod's star has dimmed, Rocky doesn't have an audience. It was pretty shrewd how someone capitalized off the the swag trend like that and I hope RCA or Sony bought them a boat that year.

SchoolboyQ has "it" but he is stuck on the westcoast. He could be like 2Chainz and have a 2nd career if he ever leaves TDE.

Kendrick's success isn't weird IMO but it is impressive that he could pull of being the "deep but relatable" westcoast Nas thing. Many have tried.

People rather listen to Busdriver but not Childish Gambino *camron face*

Half of the rappers living or dead have been under Interscope's umbrella at some point. Being on Interscope means gently caress all. It's all about management at this point. But for whatever reason, the industry is dominated by people out of Miami, Atlanta, and NY (excepting Houston). Macklemore and Kendrick broke the curse but west coast rappers tend to be big only on the west coast. In a world were French Montana had a run, SchoolboyQ should be able to do better. I'd say RiffRaff and Action Bronson are probably more well known, featured, "relevant" than a lot of west coast rappers and they are bit players at best.

It is funny that Chef Keef arguably got worse after he signed at Interscope.

Club hiphop is starting to get like dancehall in how people aren't using the same beats but they sound like the exact same beats. I enjoy finding what's different between DJ Mustard songs.

R&B

How do people like Jhene Aiko? She is pretty controversial in parts I frequent. People either love or hate her. I think she's mediocre but entertaining for some reason. She did embarrass herself at SummerJam and I think her sister Mila J is cuter. That's all have to say about her. You probably never heard of Tinashe. I have no clue who this girl is. I joke that she must be signed to Instagram because that's the only place I've seen her. She has a small fanbase though. Obligatory song. In other "forced upon singer" news, Sza is pretty weird. I guess everyone knows her from TDE but I've heard some funny gossip about her. She joked about killing herself and even SchoolboyQ sobered up for it. Anybody listen to her music? It didn't have any appeal to me.

But my favorite of D list R&B singers has to be Teyana Taylor. I heard a Teyana Taylor song on the radio! I couldn't believe it. She started out as Pharell's pet project, I guess flopped, moved on to a flop mixtape that took forever to come out, did some hoodrat things in LA for whatever reason, was allegedly engaged to a ball player, proceed to spend the bulk of her career talking about that ball player, and now she has a real life song on the radio! Probably best know for her cute butte and her role in some dumb movie. I guess she's winning now.

That's all for my update about the sorry state of R&B!

I'll confess that my understanding of what constitutes R&B is probably the fuzziest of any genre. The best definition I can muster is that it involves soulful singing... which is a pathetic attempt at definition. Anyway, It'd be great if someone more knowledgable could throw together some resources for the OP.

Outside of using wikipedia, the rule of thumb I use is music that sounds like Michael Jackson pre-Thriller is r&b and anything that sounds like MJ post-Thriller is pop. Honorable mention to Whitney Houston. From singing in church, r&b and soul (by way of gospel) sings each word as a note. You can stretch a word into multiple notes and do a run. But how that relates to pop, I don't know. I am ignorant to music theory so I can't really explain it any better. It is a really interesting question I've always wondered myself.

FKA Twigs is cool but a lot of these newer singers are too complicated for me to enjoy.

alansmithee posted:

That's wild about the SZA girl cause the last R&B chick TDE signed did kill herself (jumped off a tower in LA, it's Ab-Soul's gf that he sings about in "Book of Soul"). Joke or not seems kinda poor taste esp. given they already had someone off themselves.
Yeah I heard the same story. She allegedly has a rep for screwing her way through TDE and somebody from the internet posted a bunch of pics of her as a teenager and refuted her claim to having a strict upbringing. It is pretty funny when gossip gets confirmed but then again, people are jealous.

He wasn't just rapping gently caress you over and over, he was saying gently caress you to specific people.
