Goddamn, that's a really great flip. Keeps a good bit of glitch flavor, but still feels like it's own track too.

Edit: that said, it doesn't look Richard D. James got a song writer or sample/interpolation credit?

Yeah, listening on headphones that's clear - production has a real early High Contrast or Klute vibe, but still it's like 10 bpm off and in the same key. I look forward to the mashups (if don't try one myself - edit, light work. )

At very least, he maybe shouldn't wear highly indentifiable neon blue clothes with his logo on it on his second floor balcony for a picture for insta if since he has neighbors so nearby they can film him on any cellphone. Like, he allegedly made 20 million while in jail. Maybe he shouldn't do house arrest in a densely packed sub-development if he can't keep a low profile otherwise. Post up on a ranch in Wyoming like Kanye or something.

It's kind of fun seeing Lupe throw out modern style tracks at random. Even back to his "Japanese Cartoon" punk rock project, he's had more of a playful attitude towards music than his usually very conscious content would suggest.

Way better mastered and mixed than the first draft if not the most recent version of Jesus Is King, but only the Anakin line hits.

Em had a solid run of features for a minute during his comeback that made folks glad he didn't actually retire, then he blew that goodwill on the most cornball pop rap, then pivoted to over-technical speed rap with more modern production, and whenever artists called him out on any of it being dull, he pulled out the slurs again, further making him look like a fossil. Em could've listened when folks like Tyler the Creator said he wasn't doing good work, but no.

I think Em suffers because even a lot of his older music holds up pretty poorly, and also a lot of the stuff he says/does inside and outside of his music has gone from being funny and edgy from a 20 year old in the 90s to just kind of pathetic for a rich 40 year old white guy in the 2010/2020s.

Yeah, his inability to age with grace unlike say, Jay Z, really shows the more time wears on. Sure, lines about 8 million dollar paintings and buying the block aren't relatable, but it's more palatable and self-confident than insults aimed at artists half your age. Few enjoy "old man yells (fast) at cloud (rap)."

Ultraklystron

Yeah, I suppose part of it is that Jay Z had his "bitter old man" phase and got though it and over it with some great tracks along the way thanks to good collabs and production choices, even if the LPs as whole are more hit and miss. Em needs to finish this phase to be listenable again I suspect, and yeah, he won't be relevant to young folks, but he's not now either.

I wonder how much Em benefits from always having Shade 45 to launch singles from and from generally sitting at the heart of Interscope. He's so embedded in the industry that he has to make a "Walk On Water" before his own station passes on it.

The biggest problem with Jesus is King is the random Yandhi leaks, especially of anything with a version on each release, are as good or better, despite the Jesus is King versions being the higher effort tracks by virtue of continued iteration. Kanye needs an editor and producer that's not himself, and that's been true since Pablo.

Ultraklystron

Tyler always wanted a Gangsta Grillz mixtape, and he did himself one better by making it an album instead, and it's fantastic. He raps his rear end off. It's also neat to hear the parts that clearly tie back to some of his prior eras too. Like there's synths that are identical to ones on Igor, while there's other runs that echo Wolf and even Goblin, and it's no mistake, it's a callback. This is cohesive even beyond itself.

Yeah, even the smallest indie artists will rapidly admit they're in the t-shirt business, as even the take at the door isn't the most important part. They're going around the country and making a 45+ minute pitch to anyone with in ear shot to buy a shirt with a 300%+ margin.

Looking into it, it seems it's because on Drake's recent Trippie Redd feature, he threw a subliminal at Kanye, so Kanye is threatening to let Pusha T go full Story of Adidon pt. 2 on Drake.

I'll probably listen again but it's likely Kanye's never making a great album again. He really needs editors. There's a lot of good ideas here, and you can see some really great things happening but it's just too long. Too many songs of middling quality, and even a lot of the good songs just take too long with nothing really going on that's interesting at all.

He could've just used the Yeezus model for the rest of his career: make a bunch of stuff with some folks he's into at the moment, take it to an outside 3rd party with a strong ear who he will let tell him no to get that down to no more than about 12 songs & 50 minutes, repeat each time there's a new Yeezy business venture launching. He's just not that kind of guy, and if anything we really are heading to towards the Yeeseus project he never finishes. This may still be that project, and Universal just said "lol, lmao, too bad."
