Oh hey, the Thugger/Wayne song actually happened and it sounds great. The second verse is absolutely ridiculous.

Wezlar posted:I didn't like Unknown Memory as much as Unknown Death at first but I think it's actually a really good album. What Lean lacks as a rapper (which is a lot) he definitely makes up for by having a vision for his music and a cohesive sound. And amazing production. Yung Sherm, Gud, and Whitearmor are amazing. I'm also surprised Kyoto didn't make the album. As someone who didn't like Unknown Death but enjoyed the new album, I think Lean has found what his strengths are (mainly, singing catchy autotuned hooks over great production) and he improved his flow to boot. He's not a great (or even good) rapper, but I think he knows that isn't the appeal of his music at this point. I recently gave the new Logic album a try. Was expecting some Redditcore like Gambino or Hopsin but walked away pleasantly surprised. He sounds a bit derivative of Kendrick and Drake, but his flow is great, the production is solid, and he has some interesting things to say. Anyone know if his mixtapes are worth checking out?

Out of curiosity I checked out the Azealia Banks album and was pleasantly surprised. It feels more like a dumped file of random songs than an actual album but it's pretty solid all round and has some great production on it.

I and Thrift Shop are both garbage songs for white midwestern moms who drive SUVs, but at least they both have a ~*positive message!*~ Also while I'm at it, some of those new Chance tracks he dropped with Social Experiment are indefensibly bad

I don't hate i because it's corny (it is, though), I hate it because it sounds bad on a musical level. The beat uses a super-obvious Isley Brothers in an unimaginative way, the guitar sounds like it came off a dated 90s Santana album, and Kendrick is putting on this obnoxious impression of Andre 3000 for 2/3rds of the song. Even lyrically it's underwhelming; the lyrics are so vague and generic and feel-good that I feel like I'm listening to some struggle conscious rapper instead of Kendrick Lamar. Even Macklemore has more personality than Kendrick on i. I don't think Kendrick made the song to sell out, but I feel he's bought into his own hype about being the savior of rap, and released a toothless "feel good" conscious song that will appeal to everybody as a result. Kendrick got big off of doing his own thing and not bowing to people's expectations of what he should be, so it's super disappointing to see him put out focus tested radio songs when he's one of the few major label rappers that could release anything he wants to.

Biggest disappointment for me would be that Shabazz Palaces record. Loved Black Up but the new one wasn't really interesting me at all. e: actually, most crushing disappointment of the year would probably be Kendrick's "i". What a mess. More than half of that Nicki album just sounds like really boring FKA Twigs b-sides. I guess I'll just continue my yearly tradition of compiling her best features/singles and pretending that was the album instead.

I don't know about Quest, but his backing band for the album is Pino Palladino, Jesse Johnson, Isaiah Sharkey, Pookie Sample and John Blackwell.
