Everyone will have probably figured out that Tyrion killed Tywin, but if Varys just shows up out of the blue from gods-know-where after the alarm has already been sounded he'll look guilty as hell. I assume his original plan was to get Tyrion out quietly and return, but Tyrion hosed that plan up when he killed Tywin.

In retrospect, I wonder if they cast Sean Bean specifically because they planned on having Ned Stark's execution be right in the first season.
