It'll likely flake off, but I'd do it anyways. Gives it a layer of protection before the smoke/grease form a loving bond of happy flavor. Definitely do a pre-smoke/heat up to burn off any leftover chemical poo poo, and to see how it holds heat, etc.

I'd legit find the cheapest, fattiest chunk of meat you can get that you don't mind "Wasting" and do a big pre-smoke before anything expensive. Lets you get a feel for heat distribution, hold/burn times, etc. And gets that nice greasy-smoke layer going.

Carbon tax is coming in Jan 1st for us as well. We just get hosed on gas. This is also why people (general public not myself in particular) hate on Alberta. How is oil in the shitter, but gas hasn't really dropped? I'd guess its the companies trying to keep the bottom end going by subsidizing extraction with post-production revenue (albeit I still feel hosed a little), but a lot of people see "Alberta's in the shitter" yet the pump price never changes.

Basically, don't come here. Its horrible, and once mining recovers and the wife can get a job elsewhere...I want to get the gently caress outta dodge.

There is literally no other way across the mountains than that highway when you are that far south. Only other option, and it wasn't very palatable, was going back across the line but the port hours are not good in those crossings in the middle of nowhere.

Even though we were less than 200KM home at that time, there was no idea when we would be moving again so we made the decision. Turn around, head back to Cranbrook and then north head up through Fairmont, Fernie, Radium, Banff, Calgary, then all the way south again. I think it was an additional 500KM through mostly miserable conditions in the mountains. Got to bed around 3:30AM

There's a new place opened up an hour from me that does sales/service on sewing machines. Apparently the industry's picking back up - lots of younger people getting into quilting/sewing their own clothing.
