The flavor doesn't match up with their pre-defined experience with that texture and weirds them out. A little late on this conversation, but I've had the same experience, but reversed. I brought refried black bean and chorizo empanadas for my relatives visiting from China. They were really put off by it. My aunt later told me that she thought I had brought a dessert, since it looked just like an paste.
