A little late on this conversation, but I've had the same experience, but reversed. I brought refried black bean and chorizo empanadas for my relatives visiting from China. They were really put off by it. My aunt later told me that she thought I had brought a dessert, since it looked just like an paste.

I got some fresh naga-imo at the farmers market today, but I'm at a loss for what to do with it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
