How bad of an idea is it to get a macbook and dualboot macos/ windows for games and stuff?

i tell my students these days that they should buy whatever computer system they're comfortable with, because solidworks runs fine in dual-boot (as long as you have a 3 button mouse) and okay in parallels so it's not worth putting up with windows if you really hate it just to run one program. if you were doing nothing but solidworks every day all day, then yeah get a windows cause you're going to be staying in that environment the whole time anyway. i basically do run solidworks at least a few hours a day 3+ days a week so i have a thinkpad.

the same thing applies to games. you gonna play one game once in a while? stick with the mac. you a leet gamer? get a windows desktop you stupid dummy, nobody games on a laptop, let alone a fuckin mac laptop

he's addicted to alcohol and sex and it's true that many people with severe addictions need to truly hit rock bottom before they can accept the gravity of their situation. you wish that they'd seek therapy before then, but the inability to seek help on your own is one of the real insidious bits of extremely severe mental illness.

in his case, i'd imagine "turned to prostitution to buy a graphics card" is approaching that point, but who knows

alcoholism that makes your marriage collapse qualifies as a severe mental illness

i'm assuming it was the alcohol and drugs bc otherwise you'd be in therapy with your wife, right?

MBAM seems to catch more stuff than windows defender, but IMO I would lock up the admin account with your own password, give them a standard one, and prevent installation of any programs.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

yeah i just use defender on my own computers, but when attempting to fix some relatives' grandmaputers i have found that mbam locates more of the adware and poo poo that they have installed than defender does. at least it reports a larger number of dangerous files.

doesn't really matter bc the end result is always a wipe and reinstall, but maybe mbam might be more proactive about keeping the adware out in the first place?

if i were gonna watch star wars again i'd probably wanna watch the nicest looking version of the ones i had as a kid, which were the vhs ones that came in these boxes. these were before any of the special editions came out and note that the first one still says "star wars" on it instead of "a new hope"

which are those?

i am getting real sick of google music. i have all 20,000 mp3 in my library uploaded to their thing, but accessing it from my phone is the worst. searching is slow and bad and it always, always, always gives a lovely internet radio station as the first result, even if i type the name of the song i want word for word.

you searched for "meat loaf bat out of hell". instead of loading up that mp3, here's some stupid loving thing that'll play songs that we think are similar, but never that specific one, and with more ads than the local top 40 station! eat poo poo, fucker!

so anyway -- is there some other service i can use to do this? i don't want to put 60 gigs of mp3s on my phone. i just want to stick them somewhere and have a simple browser that lets me search and stream the one i want.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

i don't want to try four different services to see which one has the song i want to listen to. i know what's in my library and i want to listen to that.

i would probably be okay with google music if i could just disable all the live station garbage and just have it stream my own library, or at least show only those search results. but it always gives me those and the interface is just so, so bad

i also went to college with a kid who had one of those and iirc the laptop drew so much power that it couldn't run on the battery without throttling. except this was years ago so the throttling was done in software and didn't load until after the BIOS -- so you had to have it plugged into the wall to boot. once it was started up you could unplug it and carry it around (throttled to 50% or something and you still only got like an hour and a half from a charge), but if it was shut down and you didn't have a wall socket, you were SOL

i have a strange question

so i had some chrome extension that got sold to an adware developer and it got infected and i had to install malwarebytes to get rid of it. whatever. but now i have malwarebytes installed, and it keeps popping up the weirdest popups all the time: says it blocked a request to "b.securing-request.com" ("riskware") over and over again while browsing the forums.

so because it's always the same URL and IP, i looked it up and it's registered to cloudflare. i know the forums use cloudflare.

1) what is going on?
2) is this an actual normal cloudflare thing, or is it "riskware" like mbam says?
3) why does cloudflare own a suspicious-looking url like that?
4) why are the forums making requests to cloudflare all the loving time? how does cloudflare even work?

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

okay, the b.securing-request.com thing is the second-last entry (blocked by MBAM) and i guess the one after it is related cause it's trying to go to stats.browser-status.com.

what do i do with this, though? how can i find out more about what is initiating it? i only push individual bits around, don't really know web stuff.

i have two mystery "standard serial over bluetooth link" devices listed in my laptop COM ports (as COM10 and COM11) and i can't get rid of them. if i uninstall them they just come back on the next restart, sometimes with different com numbers, but always 2 of them. they are super annoying because they gently caress with my microcontroller dev stuff.

how can i figure out what is causing these to keep appearing and get rid of them for good?

e: nm, i found it. in one of the twenty or so different control panels that have something to do with bluetooth there was an entry for the input and output ports of my cheap bluetooth earbuds

Modern hard drives essentially all use cobalt alloys for their magnetic layers anyway, and earlier hard drives with iron-based magnetics used magnetite (Fe3O4), not "rust" (hematite, Fe2O3).
