Season Premiere - July 22 at 9 EST/8 CST Face Off is a competition reality show on Syfy that pits 16 semi-talented makeup artists against each other for cash/fame/A NEEEEEW CAR. Along the way, you get to see just what goes into the creation of a creature makeup, as the contestants design, sculpt, mold, cast, apply, and paint a full body prostetic makeup in just three days. Generally, everyone is nice to each other and will help their showmates get stuff done on time; this relaxed attitude is one of the biggest draws to the show. Three days is not a long time to create something as complete and ambitious as the judges expect, so while some will succeed, some of the contestants will create ridiculously incomplete, poorly designed creatures that get ripped apart by the judges. The crew is changing up slightly this year, as Ve Neill will be unavailable for all but three episodes due to her Hunger Games commitments. Lois Burwell will be substituting in for her. (edit: Oh, she's British (and has that no-bullshit vibe like Ve)! I'll be just fine.)

Yeah I went and looked up a few old youtube interviews with Lois back when she was first announced as a replacement judge and I'm sure she'll be great.

Not enough red-haired women. Why didn't casting make their quota this year?

Some quick thoughts based on looking at the contestants: There is no way Cig Neutron is that guy's real name. "DOC" looks like Rob Schneider. Dina and Sasha are cute I hope they're good and stick around. Gauged ears or whatever freak me out so I hope that guy is eliminated quickly, sorry! Can't wait for the show to start so I can judge people on their actual work instead of knee-jerk reactions to the images.

Meet Cig Neutron! https://vimeo.com/24663663 http://cigneutron.blogspot.com.au/ ( for Rocksteady & BeBop's tits) Yeah "Cig Neutron" seems to be a character he invented which he absorbed into his real life. I can totally see Glenn and Neville digging his aesthetic and design sense so I hope he stays around for a while and puts some crazy poo poo onto the stage.

I guess with Rashaad's win last season they decided they didn't need to go for diversity this time. Going by the pictures and names alone, I'm going to guess "Cig Neutron", "Doc", and blue haired girl will be the most obnoxious ones this season. Scott looks like a less jowly Michael Westmore.

I haven't been paying a lot of attention, but does Gabby only make dark elves? I could have sworn they flashed some of her previous work up and that's all I saw. Edit. Checked during the commercial and, yes, she only has elves in her portfolio. Bored fucked around with this message at 02:25 on Jul 23, 2014 |

The death team lineup looks like the worst kind of independently-published comic book. Dina is the best because of her piping bag skillz and cute hat.

PicklePants posted:Holy poo poo! Did I see the start of a Kaiju challenge? Their set builders made tiny little skyscrapers for the stage. Wikipedia lists the next 5 episode titles and none of them seem to match a kaiju theme so it looks like we'll have to wait at least 6 weeks for that episode. One of the makeups in the opening credits montage almost seemed like it was inspired by old Monty Python sketches, it's an incredibly fat dude in a suit carrying a huge fish with GOODNIGHT stencilled across it. A Monty Python episode would be amazing but I'm guessing it's just wacky ol' Cig Neutron pulling out some crazy poo poo for a regular challenge. KungFu Grip posted:I know it's silly to harp on, but going "you guys aren't on the show yet!" and then having them last a whole show is really dumb. Especially when they would have signed a bunch of waivers and NDAs and gone through induction and there'd be a complete crew of cameramen and producers following their every step.

Kung Fu Jesus posted:I hope what we saw is not an indication of the level of talent. Because there was like 1-2 that were any good. It was a 4 hour challenge with limited materials and no sculpting as well as a surprise twist halfway through so it was pretty inevitable that the results would mostly suck. It was actually a really good first challenge from the competitor's point of view since it really rammed home that they need to work super fast, to adapt to problems on the fly and manage the three priorities of A) concept, B) overall look/initial impression and C) fine details and paintwork, and that if you gently caress up any of those elements you'll be sent home. For the viewers, unfortunately, it was a pretty low key first episode since it was pretty much just a foundation challenge and not the full three day contest we're used to. I thought they mostly did okay for the conditions they were working under. I feel sorry for the two people who got eliminated because they were probably thinking "Okay, it's day one, we'll get a taste of what's to come and someone will win immunity or something" but nope, they got put through the wringer and kicked out without even seeing the dorm house.

I partly get the feeling the judges saw the portfolio of the two they kicked after casting and were like "gently caress THAT, we gotta get them out of here on day 1." They didn't even wait for the Goddamn ending to boot that one guy. I half wonder if he was being a dick off-camera and they just cut it.
