It's not a simple as being an outspoken Chinese dissident, isn't it? His art is good, it's very political, and he has personally caused grand political reactions because of his work. I just saw his show at the Brooklyn Museum, and it's an incredible spectacle. Now, I lived in China for a while and know the context a bit better, but a friend of mine who speaks no Chinese and has barely heard of him went with me, and still was pretty impressed. Why was Guernica a big deal? it's just a bunch of horses and poo poo.
