I know I'm late to replying to this but the spam filters actually cause me issues - I'm admning O365 (which I don't like doing! but I also don't trust anyone else internally to, we're sub 20 people and don't need a full time IT person) and I get a lot of people thinking emails are stuck in quarantine or something and I'm asked to troubleshoot emails from external sources semi frequently. And that sucks. Like if the email isn't in your junk or our quarantine what do you want me to do for you, pray tell.

Like no, I am not going to troubleshoot some outside's company email. They can figure it out on their own!

i get a perverse pleasure of people asking me why x thing works the way it does and just shrugging them off and vaguely gesturing as i only say the word "Windows" out loud, so that's another advantage to running Windows

on the downside whenever something does not work i get to scream "Windows!!!" at the top of my lungs for hours on end, because it's a feature they removed, hid or migrated somewhere else

so i'm all for more places including casinos running it so i don't suffer alone

Outsourcing for that is not a gread idea, they will hit you back with the fees they will charge on anything they will do for you and you will forever be a slave to them as any change has to go through them. It sucks. Most third-parties I've worked on with anything related to IT had to google poo poo in my face, keep it in house at that point I can google poo poo myself without paying you stupid amounts of money lol

What also sucks is Teams with a call plan. It's what we use where I work and dealing with extensions and stuff is just Not Fun. Maybe I didn't find the actual ways to set up extensions easily, but man is it a pain to get anything done other than assigning anyone a number.

In general, I think outsourcing IT is a trap. They are never invested in the organization and the work is always subpar and everything costs extra money. Frankly, I think doing most things in-house saves money and improves results. But for specialty areas like VoIP, I do think it can be worth it, depending on what you need, or at least outsourcing the initial setup. That stuff can get pretty complex. We run our VoIP stuff in-house, but we contracted out the design. Our contractor was excellent and left us with an organized system that we could administer.

VoIP administration is always a pain in the rear end, though. Because traditional phones are legacy tech, people have well-established ideas in their heads about how things should work, and no two people have the same ideas about it. There tend to be a lot of "special cases" and you end up making all these individual changes.

The worst I've mused with dealing was extensions and I said lol gently caress that and then no one kind of has issues with it, especially since we blocked our phone system to anyone external (as in they are redirected to a message telling where to leave an email no matter what), so I have simply chosen not to bother further, people just call each other using Teams's built in stuff.

I'll absolutely second the idea that outsourcing IT in general is a bad idea for most things though. I'd rather people bug me about stupid poo poo like having their email deleted because they selected all their emails and then their mouse accidentally hit "Delete" on the keyboard and flushed everyhing (real case that has happened to me) than to deal with someone that is NOT in a hurry to get back to me to fix whatever issue we are having. Also helps build general knowledge of how stuff works and how to modify it (well until something like Microsoft hits you with the "we migrated this thing somewhere else have fun re-figuring it out!)

Maybe nowadays the goal is not have perfect memory but have techniques for adapting to new stuff rather than trying to memorize everything.

I'd agree with that, I don't want to generalize but the more communication / information is available, the more you realize that you as a person don't know a huge amount of stuff. Which is fine! Fields, especially tech, have become more varied and in-depth on so many levels.

Adaptability is key, and I would argue is a much stronger skillset to possess than in-depth knowledge about something that may or may not change in the future. gently caress, if you question yourself or if you know how to look stuff up that already puts you ahead of the curve, in any field, imo.

The Iron Rose posted:

While your business’ inability to commit is certainly frustrating, and extra responsibility certainly merits extra pay, this is a bit of a self own and a good way to screw up your future promotion prospects. This is from a practical, not a moral perspective. You certainly deserve extra pay for extra work!

In my limited experience, businesses are very reluctant to pay for training that isn’t reimbursement of self study, and that training tends not to be very high quality when it does exist. On the other hand, learning new things and using them in production is essential for building your skillset so you’re qualified for more senior roles. I’d recommend learning the new things, and being open to learning new things, and then if your company won’t reward you for that, take your new skillset elsewhere.

Refusing to learn new things at all, and worse announcing it, is a good tactic if you’re content to stay in your current role. If you want those higher positions, then I think your stance is counterproductive. If you feel you’re being taken advantage of, it’s probably time to try and find a role elsewhere that’s probably going to pay a lot more.

It’s not fair, but I’ve always had to do the work that qualified me for more senior titles before getting those senior titles and the commensurate pay bumps. Again, obviously companies can and do take advantage of eager know-it-alls like yours truly, to which the answer is again to find a new job if you feel you’ve been treated unfairly.

I both agree and disagree with a loooot of this.

In short, I agree with the take that being open that you don't want to learn new stuff is kinda shooting yourself in the foot, but I disagree with saying that it's also bad to announce it, because if you never put your foot down, then you risk the burn out usually comes associated with spreading yourself thin or being put on projects that lead to nothing, especially if management is limp dicked. ESPECIALLY in IT.

I'm personally of the school of thought that being asked to pick up stuff without training or proper extra pay is borderline exploitative, because well when are you meant to do that? On work hours? When you already have to do stuff to help sure the business runs? Outside of work hours - unpaid? I feel like it compounds with the perception that other people feel like you just don't put in any work while you're just being sent chasing your own tail by management.

I'd also argue that a lot of management staff goes with how good or bad the "vibes" are, and that it is terribly exhausting to deal with the whims of people that do not actually have to put any effort into most projects short of approving / disapproving of it.

It's always a tricky situation to be sure, but I guess a lot of it is context dependent on how much you're being hosed with. Asked to pick up stuff for a project that goes to poo poo? Sure. gently caress it. I learned something. Routinely asked to learn new stuff and not getting anything out of it? That's a whole different ball game.
