It was officially possible through the '91 model. The '92-96 (OJ) model had a third brake light and shoulder belts so removing the roof meant removing legally required safety equipment.

It was still the same basic technique to remove it though, they just changed the hex bolts for tamper-proof Torx and removed the instructions from the owners manual.
