Tirade posted:I'd love to see someone ask why this shouldn't also be extended to the pension and veteran's benefits. Why should my tax dollars be spent so some old lady can feed her pokie addiction? "Because at least she had a job! She worked hard, paid into the system and it would be unfair to pull the rug underneath her. If Granny has a pokie addiction, she is in need of treatment by professionals, not judgement by latte-sipping champagne socialists."

TobyObi posted:https://www.news.com.au/finance/rea...l-1227034374596 I really don't understand how anyone but the already wealthy affords housing here. I ran into a guy I went to uni with a few weeks ago, he was commuting from Kwinana to Morley (to give an idea of how far that is, it's a ~45 minute drive assuming no traffic, god knows how long that was taking him on public transport) every day for work because the only house he could afford to rent was under the rental affordability scheme. Meanwhile, some mutual friends of ours are out househunting and the places in their pricerange are either massive shitholes with serious structural/cosmetic problems, or 1 bedroom apartments. My partner and I decided to take a look at the real estate pages just a few days ago, and found that everywhere we actually wanted to live was far too expensive to even entertain the idea of buying. Hurray, forever renting!

Les Affaires posted:It's also worth mentioning that for every person that does this, there has to be tens of thousands more who live a normal life in order to sustain hers. I heard the interview on triple J. She was in Melbourne for the writers festival and wondered why nobody her age was living the same lifestyle as her. I thought she was completely out of touch with reality, which probably isn't surprising considering she spends months out at sea.

Update on my job - they may have been paying somebody's super using the voluntary contribution BPAY details for the past 5 years at least. This has only come to light because I am with the same superannuation fund as that guy. Edit: this is bad because crazy tax implications, ATO getting involved, etc. froglet fucked around with this message at 10:36 on Aug 29, 2014 |
