You Am I posted:How does one come to this conclusion when you include the carbon costs of building multiple homes versus a single building with a number of apartments, as well as the pollution of people living on the fringes usually having to travel to work in a car or having to travel in a car to public transport? Last semester I did a major assignment advocating high density development in Adelaide; I couldn't find a single paper that contested the general rule that density is inversely proportional to environmental impact.

Couple of questions that I should know the answer to (as I want to go into research post grad) but don't; if a HD is 7/7 how do you have a HD average GPA without getting all HDs throughout your degree? And when you guys say published do you mean like peer reviewed conference papers or journals? Because I don't really see an undergrad producing journal quality work.

hooman posted:The ADF has a crazy poo poo culture. Any recruit is beaten down until they tow the line on good and bad and right and wrong. It's all us and them and mere civilians who "don't get it". It's hosed beyond all belief. A good friend of mine has finally escaped it (despite their every attempt to sabotage her ability to leave) and in the 6 months since leaving has gone from staunch "only the liberal party forever" to "voting greens next election" just from being away from the toxic loving culture of it. The ADF is hosed, most members of the ADF are hosed, not because they're bad people necessarily, but because of the loving indoctrinating loving ADF. I know two people involved with the ADF, one an ex-full timer and the other an active reservist. The former is Young South Australian of the Year and the latter has received a South Australian Science Excellence Award, both in regards to their work in humanitarian technology. So I guess ymmv?

hooman posted:Did they join as officers? I can only speak from the experience of my friends who served in Iraq as infantry. Full timer was an officer, the reservist joined other ranks but is now an NCO. I guess I'll go full disclosure and say I'm currently in the application process for reserves engineering corps officer. That being said, I really doubt I could do full time. The recent exposure of all the poo poo that goes on at ADFA massively put me off the officer corps but reservists for the most part stay the gently caress away. I also have a choice on whether I go on deployment, which means if I get asked to go Iraq or Afghanistan 2.0 I can just say no.

Execu-speak posted:I'm annoyed at the media calling a protest with no arrests as having 'turned violent' because the protestors pushed over a temporary fence. I'm getting pictures on my news feed of a student who was trampled by police horses. I did note when I was looking at pictures that whoever set up the fence put the little stabilising triangle segments on the wrong side (i.e. to resist people pushing out, not in) and I'm not surprised they managed to tip it over. Kind of makes me regret not going, but I've been at home sick the last couple of days. Edit - How convenient, footage just popped up of the horses moving through the lines. Those On My Left posted:The Commonwealth was purporting to make contracts with chaplaincy providers, giving them cash. Problem is, there was no legislation authorising the making of these contracts. In the first case, the Commonwealth argued that they didn't need legislation anyway. The High Court said "No, you do." Then they made some pretty lovely legislation purporting to support the contracts. Then the High Court said "No, you don't have any legislative power to make that legislation." That's because under the Constitution the Commonwealth can only make laws about a bunch of particular, specified subjects. Chaplains don't come under any of those subjects. This is good. With upcoming state elections, Libs at the state level don't have the same luxury to push lovely policy like the Feds do.
