I think 13th Age works with "Nearby", "Far", etc. As far as I know, it's a good compromise between the grid and theater of the mind.

I'm going to try and swap modifiers for dice. So instead of a +2 you roll 1d4, instead of a +3 you roll 1d6. Etc.

Actually, I guess I could post what I'm doing here after I'm done with my finals. 4e is its base, at the very least. :v:
