I forgot how silly random injuries could be in TEW2020; a luchador suffered a separated shoulder in a freak eyebrow-plucking accident.

Putting on the goofy injuries settings is required for games like that.

i just realized my main goal will be to get some random wrestler a record of like 575-0

edit: i wonder if it will be possible to break the game by giving someone too many wins

this is the coolest the game has ever looked thus far, they should have lead off with Lucha Bros gameplay. Incredible they somehow got all of Fenix's moveset into this game.

There's a full roster tweet out and uh, I'm gonna choose to believe that the renders they use here are the unfinished ones they didn't bother to update

Cody's jacket is so big it makes me think he's wearing a trenchcoat like a detective.

Edit: Also drat the roster reveal really dates when the roster must have been finalized. Toni Storm was women's champ back in September and isn't in the base game.

From what I heard the roster cutoff was around when Swerve showed up.

That'd make sense. I couldn't put an exact time on it before but the roster does feel like 'what if they made an AEW game to come out in early 2022?'.

I've never played the 2k games but I thought those games were supposed to be bad based on how often wrestling fans whine about them? Some of these reviews are making it sound like they are the king of wrestling games. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those things where gamers enjoy the game more than the critics.

Fight Forever currently has a lot of warts that aren't gameplay-related, but reviewers have to review it as though the game is what it is out of the box, and a $60 wrestling game lacking key features of the promotion it is built on and CAW options that would have been considered unacceptable and outdated a decade ago is not going to be well-reviewed, nor should it really be?

All the reviews point out that there's a lot of potential due to the gameplay itself being really strong, so we'll just have to see if those problems get fixed sooner rather than later.

This reminded me of some complains about the Casino Battle Royale in the game, which I know is a different thing but Battle Royale made me think of it.

I saw some folks complain that the match doesn't feel like AEW at all because it doesn't run the same way an actual casino battle royale runs where X number of people come out for each suit. Would that actually be fun in any way at all? I think even the WWE game maxes out at 8 characters on screen now; is the game fun at that point or is it annoying with so many characters in such a confined space?

I guess it'd be nice to have more than 4 people in the ring at once, but I can't really conceive of a better way of doing that match type more in line with real life AEW unless you had 8 max people in the ring, and when you were down to 4 then the next suit of 4 wrestlers came out.

I think people who buy the AEW game want the game to be like AEW instead of completely unrelated things with AEW branding.

I wonder if we'll find out if the game is a financial success or failure at any point.

Well just based on how long it took to go from 'okay this is the finalized roster' to release I'm guessing there's a very minimal chance of it being a financial success.

I doubt we'll ever get hard numbers though.

Basic Chunnel posted:

I’m not sure the game ever had a very good sense of what it was going for, or rather, that whatever greater ambitions it had were never really feasible, and so they settled on a fairly simple sports arcade-type experience suited to a stripped down feature set. Was No Mercy an arcade-y game? In some ways, yes, but it didn’t feel thin. It felt like there was real meat to it.

The problem is that arcade games have not done well in recent years. FF feels a lot like the NBA Jam remake — not bad to play, does what it sets out to do, but that wasn’t much beyond quick and basic exhibitions. It didn’t sell well.

Beyond the few legacy franchises kept alive by e-sports, there doesn’t seem to be a market for that kind of throwback. And with games based on actual sports, you have to remember that the most common type of sports nerd is the stats guy, the theory-crafting fantasy league guy, and whatever the flaws of roundabout simulationism in sports games I think it appeals more to those people than arcade-y treatments or the deepest possible TEW sim-strategy.

I think Fight Forever wants to be a competitive fighting (but wrestling) game, but has a lot of broken mechanics that nobody seems to care about fixing and came out in the same month as a brand new Street Fighter built around extremely extensive create a fighter options.

I would 100% say without irony that Fire Pro's CAW mode, whether in the GBA game or Fire Pro World, is tremendously better than Fight Forever's. I genuinely think FF's CAW suite is the worst of any wrestling game I have ever played.

I would say it is not worse than like WWF Attitude but that game let you make horrible monstrosities.

I have to assume one of those cut features was 'the ability to download CAWs' because without that the game was going to be dead on arrival no matter what.
