Played my first game against a friend. Both of us have picked up Rebels. He's been playing for a while and has everything up to the Tantive IV so far, I have a starter and what I played which was all I could find (less a HWK-290) locally.

I played:
Airen Cracken + Ion Pulse Missile + Munitions Failsafe
Biggs Darklighter + R2-D2
Blackmoon Squadron
Green Squadron

He played
Luke Skywalker + R2 Unit + Proton Torpedoes
Blue Squadron
Gold Squadron
Green Squadron

I nearly tabled him. Took a few scattered hits on my shields but never took a hit to hull, drove through his line and split into two mutually supportive groups. Focused down his A, then his B then his Y. The Ion Pulse Missile missed with every shot, I'm not sure it was worth the cost. MVP was easily Biggs who soaked most of the damage. Airen consistently performed well, matching mobility with Biggs. If I'd only remembered to use his ability once. The E-Wing was solid too, the A-wing was fast and managed to pick off his B-Wing but I'm not sure it was worth the cost when I could have a tooled up Z-95 for the same cost.

Really enjoyed it and looking forward to playing again.

Guys I'm after some advice for where to go from here. I've currently been focusing on Rebels and have
-Core set
-A-Wing
-E-Wing
-Z-95

I've about £35 that's come back to me as a refund for something and I'm thinking about expanding. Not sure where to go though.

I'd love to pick up a Y-Wing but they're sold out everywhere, as we all know, or ridiculously inflated on the secondary market. A B-wing seems like it would be useful and would round out my secondary weapons. A second Z-95 or A-wing would be nice as more cheap filler and fun pilots. Rebel Aces seems like good value but its not out yet. I could also pick up a HWK-290 locally which I hear isn't great but looks like it could be a cheap control/support ship with an ion cannon turret.

Or I could grab Imperial Aces and something else and bump up that force to something playable.

Any tips for what's fun, available in the UK and not totally ineffective? If it helps the guys playing locally aren't proxying anything.

I would strongly suggest getting another X-Wing expansion if you don't have one already since it opens up the options in terms of X-wing pilots, including Wedge, probably the best x-wing pilot in the game. B-wings are also nice and I would take one over a Y-wing but it really depends on what style of list you like flying.

Had my second game last night. First time as an imperial. I ran.

Echo with Veteran Instincts and Advanced Cloaking Device
Bounty Hunter with Heavy Laser Cannon
Academy Pilot
Academy Pilot

He ran

Luke Skywalker with R2D2 and proton torpedoes
Etahn with Flechette Torpedoes
Prototype pilot with Chaardan Refit
Prototype pilot with Chaardan Refit

Really fun game, we both made some (lots) of silly mistakes. Rereading the rules we were playing the attack phase wrong in many ways but in a spirit of fair play. The bounty hunt was great, soaked damage, destroyed both A-wings abs was closing in on Etahn when I misdialled and flew it off the board. We had a cloaked Echo on one hull and Luke Skywalker on one hull at knife fighting range when we called it. The Phantom was boss too, so many dice...

Really happy with the list, need to learn how to fly the drat ships now!

I followed the advice of someone on here and had a cheap square PVC banner printed with a cool background from the hubble images.

I've really enjoyed playing imperials so far, kinda had my hand forced when my usual opponent bought me a phantom for my birthday. He also exclusively plays rebels. Don't know how to expand, only have 3 TIEs, a Phantom and a Firespray. Might be able to afford something end of the month, Decimator is tempting me as is the Lambda but I also think I should get another TIE or maybe even two to make a small swarm.

On the other hand I finally picked up a Y-wing. I'm sure there's a good XXY list to be made but I can't quite get my head around it.

Thanks for the opinions guys, nice to talk about these things. I've a fair few sets, actually. A-wing, B-wing, X-wing, E-wing, Y-wing, Rebel Aces and the aforementioned imperial forces.

Another TIE is a given, I love the idea of a small swarm of TIE fighters supporting a bigger imperial ship. Imperial Aces looks fun but yeah not essential. Not made a tournament but the guys I play with include a chap who is definitely on the autistic spectrum and between him and the guy who cheats everyone is insisting on exact cards at the moment.

Speaking of imperial lists, I have two tie defenders that I love, but constantly lose when flying. Can someone help me draw up something cool to do with them? Currently I'm leaning to a list that has 2 deltas and a bounty hunter, but I'm not sure what else to do with the remaining 7 points. I was thinking either an HLC somewhere, or bumping the D's up to PS3 so I can move them all at once, or EU on the firespray because I suck at flying properly with large base ships. Thoughts?

Couple of ion cannons on the Defenders? Spit-balling here but you could ionise turn one, white K behind and either follow behind ionising or if you miss you'd be out of arc for the next turn and can try again.

Speaking of TIE Advanced, I bought one yesterday. Looking at its stat card, it seems like it's a poor mans Defender/ rich mans TIE. Someone tell me how I should run this thing. My initial thoughts are Vader+Cluster missiles.

I haven't tried mine yet but yeah, Vader looks like the go to. Proton Rockets or Cluster Missiles look like the best choice to give him some oomph to me, or maybe an Assault Missile if you're facing a swarm. FFG and the general consensus seem to agree the Advanced is a little overpriced and underpowered. They're releasing a new title as a fix for this with the Imperial Raider huge ship set, it'l get a Systems Upgrade slot and a 4 point reduction (down to 0) on said upgrade. Oh, and a new Systems Upgrade with a free crit when you hit someone you have a target lock on is going to be in the same pack. This should be a huge boost to the Advanced.

On an unrelated topic, I managed to get a Millenium Falcon in the UK at below RRP. I don't play rebels very often but thought this sounded fun and punchy:
Chewbacca + Millenium Falcon + Jan Ors + Gunner (50)
Blue Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (25)
Blue Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (25)

29 hit points (15 of which are shields), 9 red dice (12 at range 1) with two nimble knife fighters and a turret. Jan allows the Blues the option to tank up with evade tokens and Chewie is free to try and tank with an evade with the Gunner backing up his attack. Another option I thought if was to swap Jan and the Falcon title for Recon Specialist and let Chewie rove independently as a flanker.

Edit: Beaten to the above and thought tere was a range limit on the new Systems Upgrade, which there isn't. Ouch.

Played a game against my brothers Scrum today, 100 point dogfight.

I thought I'd give my rebels a run out for a change. Ran

Wedge+Push the Limit+R2 unit
Coran Horn + Fire Control System + R2D2
Biggs

He had
Binyare Pirate
Cartel Spacer
Kavill + Autoblaster Turret + Unhinged Astromech
Bossk+ Nashtar Pup

I immediately cocked up and by turn 3 Coran was in the middle of the joust. Biggs was deleted as planned then Coran got wiped out in a turn of shooting, though he did manage to destroy the Cartel Spacer and strip the shields from Kavill. My stupidity continued when the Binyare Pirate had an illegal manoeuvre and I used my free choice of his move to put him in position for Wedge to bump him. By now all I had was Wedge and I thought that was it.

My green dice held and I ended up bouncing off the back of Bossk with two solid turns of range two shots on Kavill without any real return fire. Y-wings are tough but couldn't repel firepower of that magnitude. He then made his next mistake and I managed 4 turns of unanswered shooting at the back of Bossk, who promtly disintegrated. Came down to an exciting joust against the two Z-95s which Wedge just couldn't keep up with.

Wedge was MVP and Coran was solid (just used very badly), Biggs was a wasted opportunity and 2 Z-95s would have been much more useful. My brother is in love with that Kavill build but its a little too restricted with range 1 for my taste, even with the Unhinged astromech after the first pass its easy to stay at range 2-3 and burn it down. The Hound's Tooth is a tank and was certainly strong but the dial was quite predictable.

I think I'm finally getting the hang of manoeuvring the Lambda shuttle, ran a classic buzz saw shuttle against a friend yesterday. I actually feel a bit bad, he's a good guy and good at manoeuvring but hs list building is terrible.

I ran

The Inquisitor + Title + VI + Autothrusters
Omicron Group Pilot+ FCS + Gunner
Patrol Leader + Darth Vader

I wanted to try out The Inquisitor and get some shuttle practice in. The Decimator was to get some experience moving it, give some reliable damage output and a little bit to give him a better target.

He ran
Wedge + R2D2
Poe + BB8 + Plasma Torpedoes
Tycho + Title + PTL + Wiired + autothrusters + chardan refit

I set the Inquisitor on my left flank, lambda at range 2 inside it and the Decimator on the right flank. He put Tycho and Poe right in front of the Lambda and Wedge just inside of the Decimator.

Turn 1, I slow roll the lambda and the Inquisitor, slam the Decimator forwards as fast as it will go. He sends everything forwards as fast as he can which puts Tycho in front of the Lambda, loses shields for nothing in return. Next turn he slows Poe and Tycho, I red stop the Lambda and crawl the Inquisitor in field at 1 (target locking Tycho). Decimator crawls forward to edge round an asteroid and Wedge 2 turns in towards it. I had a target locked Tycho sat at range 1 of the shuttle but he melted to the Inquisitor first, shuttle managed to strip a shield off Poe. Wedge missed the Decimator and lost his shields.

My mate fell apart. Wedge slowly followed the Decimator which I crept round in field. Took 3 rounds of firing but I vadered down Wedge leaving the Decimator on 9 hull. The lambda slow turned towards the Decimator. Poe Talon rolled , ran forwards out of arc and the K-turned back in field. I ran the Inquisitor across the field towards Wedge and K-rolled back in field after he exploded, trying to hold distance on Poe.

The only bit I was even remotely proud of in this massacre was managing to run my Decimator and Shuttle to either side of Poe in the dying turns. I'm pretty bad at manoeuvring, especially large ships, but judged it perfectly. Poe was in contact with Decimator at an angle with Lambda just behind but not in contact. Lambda starts to turn roundtowards the Decimator, Decimator sets a 1 straight which can't clear Poe so stays stationary. Then he sets a 2 bank that can't clear the Decimator which gives me another turn to bring the Lambda round and the Inquisitor in. Poe finally clears the Decimator and the Inquisitor finishes him off.

Feel a bit guilty about this one, to be honest, he really didn't play well even with his odd deployement.

TLDR: I think I'm getting better at manoeuvring large base ships, my friend played really badly.

TIE Defender (35), Tractor beam (1), Adaptability (0), TIE/D (0), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (19)

I had the weirdest game of x-wing last night. 150 a side, 3 players each side. My team was rebels and the opposition scum who had inexplicably decided to bring a TIE phantom. Needless to say it was a casual game.

I'm not good at x-wing. The friend who invited me to the game is probably better than me at positioning but only plays canonical x-wing loaded as per the movies. He's not great at list building. His brother was the rest of our team and built a loaded Key an B wing to go with a BB8 Poe. I brought my favourite AdS blue squadron B wing pair and we rounded off with a Chardan Green Squadron pilot.

The opposition had 3 z95s (N'Dru in one), a firespray, a scimitar squadron TIE phantom with Stygium particle generator and a naked generic StarViper.

The next 2 hours were spent misinterpreting rules and making bizarre choices. The TIE Phantom never cloaked and got eaten in a joust with B wing. The other B wing and the A wing ate the StarViper. The Firespray flew off the board and was allowed to barrel roll back on turn 2 and spent the rest of the game creeping around the edge of the board. The Z95s bumped turn one then spent the next 2 turns in a beautiful formation advance entirely negating N'Dru's ability and nearly took out Keyan at the cost of one Z95 which made the scum player flip his poo poo and spend the rest of the match trying to keep the rest alive at the expense of shooting.

In the end they had the Firespray left and we had all but one A and Poe (who bit it in the last turn).

This is the first game I've not really learnt anything, other than getting more practice eyeballing distances. It was so strange, apparently these guys play most weeks but none of them really know the rules. I guess you could call this a beer and pretzels game except for how seriously they took it all. So very strange.

I ran
Redline, FCS, autothrusters, plasma torpedoes, cluster missiles, extra munitions
Delta squadron, TIE/X7, TIE mark 2
Onyx squadron, TIE/X7, TIE mark 2

He ran
Contracted Scout with some gubbins I forget
4-LOM, adaptability, cloaking device, auto blaster
Mandolin(?), adaptability, Nashtah pup, tractor beam, unhinged and K4

Neither of us had ran any of these ships before.

I tabled him without loss. I didn't fly brilliantly but the Scout was dead in 3 turns without firing to any effect and the rest followed. The defenders were incredibly hard to hit and intimidating as hell do he ignored the Punisher far too long.

Neither of us are really experienced or skilled but this was brutal for him. I'm going to have to run this again to see how it holds up.

It went against all my instincts to load up the Punisher that much, I usually like to have at least a mini swarm of something on the table and unless it's a tooled up falcon that much on one ship seems very fragile but still.

The TIE mark 2 did help open up the dial a bit but the defenders still felt predictable. Almost every time I didn't focus I felt like I would have been better doing that. Keeping the speed up felt...odd. My shots were longer ranged but with the low PS often had at least a focus behind them. Stress wasn't a big factor for either side either.

Interesting game. But less high powered than you guys tend to play but fun.

I think mathematically, autothrusters is just not as valuable on low-agility ships.
