Glub glub.
Glub glub.

This week I learned that Deceit and Mechanics are the most useful combat skills in the game. Spoilers included to keep from ruining a minor twist in the Jewel of Yavin module.

Goon and all-around good person Ryven Cedrylle has been running my wife and I through the misleadingly-named Jewel of Yavin module (misleading, as it takes place on Cloud City) and we've pretty thoroughly broken it as of Tuesday. There was some content cut from the adventure since there’s just the two of us and the progression of the module seems to be based around providing options for multiple

I'm playing a smuggler and con-artist named Towen Spitfire who was kicked out of the Jedi Order and severed from the Force prior to the Clone Wars, what with getting into an argument with Anakin Skywalker and the trying to cut him in half with a lightsaber whynot :zoidberg:.
Since hiring a Force-Sensitive teen as his ship’s mechanic and starting to give her some slight training his sensitivity to the Force is starting to come back. (Advisor)

My wife’s character is the Franki Dulon, the teenage daughter of a man who was definitely once a member of the Matukai order and may have been a Rebel agent. She's got some significant talent in the skills of the Matukai but her real defining trait is a skill for computers and machines. (Artisan).

We got brought in on the adventure because one member of the exhaustive NPC list (I believe her name is “Lady that’s married to the gangster”, said gangster is named “The gangster guy with the space cappuccinos”) contacted my wife’s character Franki with a promise of information on her missing dad in exchange for stealing her a Corusca Gem that was up for auction, thus starting the adventure’s heist-based tale.

We absolutely demolished the competition in the skycar race, thanks to Towen being the best drat pilot in the galaxy and Franki being the best drat mechanic in the galaxy. This allowed some sort of bidding thing to happen more gooder, we kinda skipped that because it was boring and late. We also hired a slicer, which allowed us to slice the computer that processed the bidding for the Corusca Gem and deposited the winning bid straight into our bank accounts.

We also took a trip to the museum in order to case the joint, discovering a major security weak point in the form of some sort of air corridor that runs vertically through Cloud City. We also got information about the entire security infrastructure around the gem by overhearing one of the guards talking about it in overwhelming detail, including the military detachment and badass security droid that walks the halls at night. We also hack one of the maintenance droids to start vigorously cleaning the statues and paintings to distrac

We also allied ourselves with the Jedi lady, promising her the Corusca Gem. She also arranged a fake Corusca Gem for us to pass off to Lady that’s married to the gangster.

So we break into the museum through this wind tunnel thing and piss off some crazy hive-birds. Franki kicks a few of them to death and Towen uses a Triumph to suck the rest up into a huge fan.

Once we’re in the museum’s maintenance closet we flip a Destiny Point to declare that the museum’s fuse box is in here. Franki cracks it open and kills the power to the lights. Towen stalks down the Security Droid and takes it out with an Ion Blaster in a single shot. The noise draws the attention of one of the guards who radios that the security droid is down and requests backup.

Thus begins the deceit checks.

Towen shoots the guard in the face and takes his comlink.

:smug: “Nevermind, looks like the droid just shorted out.” [minor success]
:cop: “Alright, hang tight in there, we’re sending in maintainence.”
:smug: “Uhm uh….” grabs the dead guard’s helmet and starts shooting randomly into the air “Wait no, it’s up and shooting at me! This thing’s bugging out! Get in here quick!” [huge success]
Towen then grabs the fallen guard’s helmet and dons it, using the darkness and confusion to compensate for the lack of the rest of the uniform.

Meanwhile Franki manages to get the droid back up and running but isn’t able to hack its friend/foe recognitoin. This is fine as the guards rushing in and opening fire on it triggers its self-defense programming and allowing it to start firing back. The security droid starts mowing them down like a thresher through a moisture field or whatever the hell people thresh in Star Wars. They manage to find cover and start making a good show of fending off the droid, which Franki uses as an opportunity to send in another droid.

This is the floor cleaning droid, who she reprograms to clean all organic material from the guards’ armor. This is unfortunate as the guards are considered organic material. He runs in wielding his floor buffer like he’s Leatherface in the middle of spring cleaning.

Franki takes this as an opportunity to bolt into the room where the security terminal is kept and shuts down all the security like a total boss. Towen ducks into the gallery where the jewel is kept, and we flip a Destiny Point to declare that there are other less-valuable gems on display in here, one of which is yet another Kyber Crystal.

:cop: “Barel (name of the dead guard), what are you going?!”
:smug: “Um… better cover!” [success, plus like eight setbacks]
:cop: “He’s right!” (all guards file in behind Towen)

The two droids charge into the room from opposite sides, catching the guards in a pincer maneuver, and Towen and Franki use the opportunity to nab the Corusca Gem and the Kyber Crystal and hightail it out.

Once outside the two meet up with Jedi lady and pass off the Gem to her in exchange for the fake, and we learn that the module originally planned on her following us in secret and stealing the gem and end the module, thus avoiding a fairly large number of combat encounters using wit and intelligence.
