Without making a bunch of new kinds of enemies to encounter or having an AI thats smart enough that you can make it act stupid it's really hard to make games actually harder. its really easy to make things take longer to die though, and that means the player dies more and people are like "well I died a lot more it must have been harder"

The enemies don't become bullet sponges so much as you have to alter which weapon/ammunition combination you're using to blow through damage resistance. Albino Radscorpions in Fallout 3 were a bad example of how to ramp up difficulty since they just became huge stacks of HP. New Vegas attempts to remedy this through an increase in DR and through granting innate properties that have a weakness. For example, most of the creatures in old world blues that give people trouble can also be dealt with through pulse or emp on hit effects. Deathclaws go down surprisingly easily to explosive or AP rounds and max charge cells can do wonders mid - late game for energy weapons folks. It's not perfect but it's much better than adding stacks of HP.

The best difficulty combo is jsawyer on normal. You get that vulnerable feeling for a while because your base hp is so low and all the op armours have has their DT slashed.

Very Hard might make all the enemies bullet sponges but Hard feels decent to me. enemies take longer to kill than on Normal/Easy but it doesn't feel ludicrous and the extra damage they do introduces the slight possibility that I might die at some point. The battle of Hoover Dam was actually tough when I first played on Hard, though that was partly because I'd limited how many healing items I took because I figured if I had less stuff in my inventory the game might crash less. I was wrong.

I just use mods that make the player more fragile and play on hardcore to nerf healing items but whatever floats your boat.

What I usually tweak on Project Nevada: *HP/Level *toggle OFF helmet overlay *toggle OFF intense first aid or whatever they ended up calling it (triage or something) *toggle ON explosive entry *toggle ON extra helmet vision modes Leave the loot mods alone that are DISABLED by default. If you try toggling them on a warning screen pops up and for good reason. The actual loot spawn rates are adjusted to be much more harsh so you might want to mess with those a bit. All of this can be done in game through the escape menu option mod manager.

I reinstalled New Vegas because of this thread and the game is running great for me. I have jesawyer loaded up and climbed around the canyons to get to Vegas at level 3, managed to get a laser rifle and laser RCW, I forgot how much fun there is in this game in just rushing your way to OP poo poo and then going through the low-level questlines turning dudes to ash.

You probably did not need to do that since their are dead Brotherhood of Light corpses everywhere with awesome laser poo poo all the way to novac.
