I measure these polls by how they rank UCF which my gut says should be in the 50-60 range given the program's history, talent levels, coaching, and conference. I like that most polls feel the same and love the one that has UCF in the 30s.

They're not a very good offense but have a pretty good scoring defense. They're middle of the road in the strength of schedule I calculate. They have three losses, but the Mizzou loss looks better as time goes on. The bad, bad loss to UConn kills them. They'll probably come back up into the 40s this month since they get to feast on Tulsa, SMU, and USF up until the ECU game in Week 14.

By the way, here's a look at the strength of schedule I use for my poll. This just averages the scores of a team's opponents. I guess I could go with something like 2/3 opponents' score and 1/3 opponents' opponents, but effort ya know. Maybe in the offseason. What's it look like if you do 2/3+1/3 opponents margin of victory (positive or negative) and opponent's opponent's mov? Maybe divide those by 7 to flatten it some. gently caress never mind I just need to figure out how to make a poll again.

I'm not quite sure how to interpret Ole Miss being within a hair's breadth of #1, but I assume that their close losses to well-ranked LSU and Auburn are simply not very damaging. Bama continues its grim climb, and Florida State continues to stagnate despite its lossless record probably due to relatively low margins against unimpressive teams.code:

It's either a feature or a flaw of my poll because Ole Miss is sort of the argument of all the other things my poll measures - 1. Tennessee has the number 2 SOS and losses to #1, #2, #12, #32, and #36. I was looking to see why we were so low in yours compared to the other two polls, and the big difference is Oklahoma. They got blown out but they are ranked #12 and #10 in the other polls. Do you mind sharing your formula (again)? I'm on my phone and it's annoying to search back.

I think Tennessee's difference is more having the 5 losses at all than whom they lost to (which explains the #2 SOS). Every other stat I include is pretty middling - point differential is only +11, offensive and defensive yardage is pretty much average, turnover margin is 0. At least your coach is better than Tony Levine. Can't speak for the other polls but I still weigh wins and losses more than anything; that is why all the five loss teams (except Kentucky, sort of) are all clumped together in the 70s and 80s. Whom loses to whom is something I don't really track. I could try playing with some kind of mechanism that accounts for that in the spring but I don't want to prevent a team or a conference of teams from dropping too far if they're losing too often. My poll calculation is, grossly simplified: .13*win + .05*top25win - .15*loss - .09*fcsloss + ((points scored^2.4)/(points scored^2.4+points allowed^2.82)) + (avg yards gained-avg yards allowed)/1000 + turnover margin*.015 = subtotal SOS score = (2/3 * average subtotal of a team's opponents + 1/3) * (the average subtotal of a team's opponents' opponents) Rank SOS scores 1-128 apply SOS bonus so that #1 gets 33% bonus to subtotal, diminishing so that #96 gets no bonus, and #97 and on is actually penalized subtotal +/- SOS bonus/penalty = final total

The whole "pythagorean" thing was just a convenient calculation Bill James made up that was useful for certain baseball stats. There is no theoretical basis for it, so using it elsewhere is a questionable issue.

Well, the theoretical basis is that point differential tends to be more predictive of future outcomes than wins and losses, with the pythagorean formula doing better than a straight runs scored minus runs allowed. However, I don't think anyone's really done in-depth studies of the formula outside of baseball, just some light surface looks at the general concept.

FWIW, my poll is a margin-of-victory ELO formula, and it also ranks Ole Miss #2 for some reason. They treat all teams the same way, but the criteria used to rate the teams are subject to the coder's own biases. The question then moves to whether or not those criteria are an appropriate measure of team quality. The "eye test" is valid as a way of evaluating the criteria selected. If somebody's poll puts New Mexico State as #1, it may be completely correct based on the way it was calculated, but it's appropriate to question whether it's actually meaningful.

I had a brief conversation with someone (maybe you?) in the aftermath thread about that, and the point I tried to emphasize is that with computer polls there is some subjective judgment in the choice of algorithm, but at least there's no "this team gets bumped up because they're Notre Dame" or whatever.

I'm trying to compare Miss. St. to Ole Miss to determine why the polls aren't rewarding them - it seems like the biggest difference is giving up more points to the teams they played in general and 34 points to UAB specifically, plus not having played Alabama. I'm guessing that if they win this weekend, they'll shoot up to the top of the polls being posted here, since they did better than Ole Miss in most of the SEC West common games - in fact I'm betting a lot of the moon polls will look a lot more normal once that game gets played (other than Basil Hayden's because I have no idea how Auburn is #2 in the pure win-loss rating component after losing to A&M). I also think this might point to overvaluing points allowed in some of the formulas, but there's not enough data to say for sure and it might just be a weird year. EDIT: This is also why I want to have access to more stats because I have a strong feeling that points are actually fairly random week to week compared to other stats like yards or interceptions, and I really want to see a stats based moon poll for comparison to the points based ones. blackmongoose fucked around with this message at 01:20 on Nov 12, 2014 |

I can give you the real world answer for this. For our first three games (this included UAB), Mullen did hockey style substitutions every series on defense, and every third or so series on offense. The upside is that we have like one total injury this season, but everyone is fresh and the backups have progressed rapidly. The downside is in perception (I've laughed every time I've seen other fanbases shout 34 POINTS TO UAB right before losing) and in any computer ranking that factors in margin of victory. Outside of Arkansas (which was a letdown game against a hungry opponent), none of our games have really been in doubt at halftime.

Alabama's joyless death march toward the top is now complete. However, Mississippi State only drops to #2. Florida State has finally impressed the poll enough to make a respectable showing. ...hold on, #17 Harvard? WTF? *checks stats* Well, looks like they have Marshall syndrome - undefeated, and with most of the wins by large margins. This is just a weakness of results-based poling when the opponents are of dubious quality. Both great teams and merely good teams will tend to blow out poor opponents. code:

Hayden Matrix Rankings, Week Twelve So, Auburn isn't #1 anymore. That's probably good, right? The top ten is still kind of a pileup of SEC teams, though. Of course, the new #1 is an unhappily familiar name... Also Ole Miss is #2 now, which I guess makes sense poll-interally since two teams above them lost and TCU's performance against Kansas docked them just enough rating points. Still kinda bugs me. I was sort of hoping Harvard would lose to Yale just so I wouldn't be in the position of having a poll with an Ivy League school ranked at #16. But hey, position in this poll is earned by results on the field, and they're undefeated mostly by large margins. While the poll has generally been skeptical of Florida State due to mediocre results against mediocre teams, it's hard to go undefeated against opponents of reasonable quality and stay down forever, and they've risen to #4. code:

Ole Miss finally getting knocked down means a lot of teams get to move up, including Florida State (finally) as an undefeated team is just going to rise to the top. For the record, I would not want my poll picking the playoffs. But I do think it's probably about right in terms of who is most likely to beat whom on any given Saturday. I expect to be vindicated when Florida State gets its teeth kicked in by Alabama. code:

It's a little late to join the party this year, but I had time over the weekend to implement a simple computer poll I've been thinking about. The methodology is based on the simple rating system, but mainly doesn't use raw MOV as the starting point for each team. Otherwise, the idea that a team's rating is some value adjusted by the strength of their schedule is accurate. The poll is more or less a predictive poll and not a retrospective ranking of quality wins and losses. A couple of previous of weeks are included since I haven't posted. Fortunately, since the data demands are pretty light for this it should be easy to implement in the future. (Thanks for the link to the Massey data in the OP, Basil.) Top 25 rankings code:code:
