I wonder how much Freak Show will mirror HBO's Carnival.I enjoyed Carnival. I personally think that this concept could be great. Anything we get will be better than Coven

I never understood the complaints about Asylums conclusion. I loved every second of it. Loved seeing how the asylum screwed with people decades after they left, and loved the ending every character was given. Even someone like Pepper, who didn't really get a proper sendoff, was done fantastically well by being used as a gut-punch to reveal just how hosed up Jude was.

Going into Coven, I didn't think it had a chance of living up to Asylum's brilliance, but even then it was a massive disappointment. The only shining light for me was Frances Conroy as Myrtle, who was absolutely bizarre and wonderful.

Because most of the characters we became so attached to got extremely lackluster conclusions.

I mean, the devil was defeated by falling two stories. That pretty much sums it up.

There was nothing lackluster about it, Sister Mary Eunice's death was rad as hell, and nobody saw it coming. And Ardens in the same episode was just as good.

Now I want to watch Asylum again.

I think most would disagree that one of the central antagonists, and the central supernatural villain, simply disappearing after a fall isn't lackluster.

Arden's death, as pathetic as it was, fit him quite well. But most of them got rather quick one-liner explanations, such as Alma and the monsignor.

Welcome to the Fantasy Zone!

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree. I'm going to spoiler the rest for the benefit of anyone who hasn't seen Season 2.

Alma's part in the story was meant to contrast her experiences with the aliens compared to Grace, and we're told after her breakdown she spends the rest of her life at Briarcliff. By now the story isn't "look at all the horrible poo poo going down here", it's switched to how the characters move on after their experiences. Alma can't, she's hung up on the horrible experiences she had whilst abducted (not that you can blame her) and she dies a few years later.

And while I agree the demon was a major antagonist, it's not like Asylum was lacking for them. Sister Mary mainly screwed with Jude and Arden, she barely interacted with Lana and Kit, and by the time of her death all her damage to Jude had been done. Would things be more satisfying if she showed up in Lana's flashbacks in old woman makeup, after twirling her moustache in a corner for decades tormenting Jude?

Finally, in a perverse way I see Sister Mary's death as liberating her from the demon. Sister Mary was probably the most innocent character in the season alongside Kit, and in the moments before her fall we're shown that she's losing what little control she has, and is scared to death of what's to come. I would not go so far as to say it's a happy ending for her, but if the alternative within the universe presented is years spent under demonic possession then it's most likely the more merciful option.

Finally, any ill will people may have towards any aspect of season two should be forgiven purely because it gave us this scene :colbert:

A major, powerful character dies off-screen and doesn't even warrant the WAAAA WAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAAAA "murder music" from the series.

'nuff said.

ED: Actually you could write an entire page of posts on what was wrong with it. Including the fact that the other witches would have IMMEDIATELY been able to determine she was murdered at that point, doubly so given there was supposedly an "outside world" that would come investigate it again, but that got forgotten after the first time entirely.

Instead they just kind of continue puttering around aimlessly until the finale.

Also everything about Bates character was ruined in the last couple episodes. A failed redemption would have been fine, but that went from "I am seeing the error of my ways" to "Nah, EVIL!"

gently caress this season was a monument to the worst writing I've ever seen. Said it before, and I'll say it again: It actually beats Heroes season 3 for bad writing. Which is something of a minor miracle.

Pretty much went like this:

Nan: "I'm turning into a badass, I think I might be the next leader!"

The other two make a snide comment and go to commercial

Come back and already defeated and being drowned in a tub. They specifically state they'll go for the others next.. then continue wandering aimlessly about.

Nobody on the show could remember that they each had the power of half a dozen X-Men whenever attacked, allowing them to both be able to flip massive buses, but unable to do anything about being strangled. Even if they thrashed her (I could buy that part) it shouldn't have been as easy as choking her out, drat it.

Oh yeah. She can read minds. She'd known their plan and that they were coming, yet, still managed to get bushwhacked like this. Goddamn this season can't remember what it did 30 seconds ago. I have seriously seen internet "everyone contributes a line" stories with more coherency.

ED: Still not as stupid as the second most powerful witch getting choked out by Frankenguy, after establishing she could literally run him like a puppet that very same episode. No, I won't let that go, it's gets dumber every time you think about it.

I only saw Murderhouse and the Asylum and both were absolutely amazing to watch. I honestly looked forward to each episode and how it would all unfold.
I heard about the show but didn't get interested in it until season 3 I think. I'd walk in on my wife watching it and got pissed at some episodes as in "Why the gently caress don't you use your powers you?!?!? YOU HAVE THEM!!!"
She told me the seasons weren't related and the first two seasons were on sale somewhere.....one of the best show purchases I ever made. drat drat good show but still haven't bothered to watch season 3.

All that crap being said I hope this season is like the seasons I've seen. Twisted, deprived, and dark as sin.

Didn't Legba even say something to Nan like "I have plans for you...We'll make a great team" and then never deliver anything or even show Nan again? That was some actual bullshit.

I don't know, I half expect her to have a horrible accident roughly a quarter- or halfway through the season so that (A) they don't have to bother with/pay for the effect anymore and (B) WHAT A TWIST.

Bonus if it's because one of the heads is evil and has to be 'dealt with' (extra bonus if the evil head's not the one that winds up going away).

I enjoy this show. I even liked Coven. I thought it was way more playful and fun than the other two but, it was up front in its whole "witches rule" theme. I especially enjoyed Jessica Lange's character in Coven and I thought her own little version of hell with her Axe Man was great. The whole concept of the same actors and actresses playing different characters every season is refreshing.
