yeah i was gonna say, the concept of a skeleton wizard who hid his soul somewhere is much older than d & d, but gary gygax may have been the first one to refer to it as a lich. i hope you've found this informative re: the development liches.

so it looks like the concept & the name developed independently, and d&d was the first to combine them
