I remember an old joke, I think it went something like this: When travelling at home, Americans are driving Ford. When travelling abroad, Americans are driving Chevrolet. When travelling at home, Germans are driving Opel. When travelling abroad, Germans are driving BMW. When travelling at home, Russians are driving Lada. When travelling abroad, Russians are driving T-90. This is the proof that all those Russian tourists in Ukraine, are in fact, tourists.

Most of this is happening in north-western Croatia and eastern Slovenia, with one Slovenian casualty. Here's a quick article, more will be known later. http://www.index.hr/vijesti/clanak/...smo/771262.aspx

The focus will be on the sovereignty of the Russian segment of the world wide web, and will include a protocol for disconnecting the Russian segment from the rest of the world in case of war or whatever. Implementing this would be a political suicide. Whole Russian population would go crazy and go on a rampage in Kremlin if there's only Russian porn left.

Zohar posted:When the rebels were taken over by the Russian army directly they routed the Ukrainians handily, hence Yatsenyuk's despondency over the military situation in the video I posted a while back. Regardless, direct deployment of NATO troops into this conflict is a really dumb idea, not just because of some outside possibility of World War 3 but because it will inevitably involve NATO troops killing Russian citizens (remember the passports they were handing out?) and a slew of other poo poo that will compromise NATO's position and lead to Russia upping the stakes dramatically as a tit-for-tat. If it were to happen right now it would be doubly terrible since Putin can, with some justification, point to the political settlement he'd already worked out with Poroshenko and which NATO would have unaccountably trashed. If Russia was giving passports everywhere, then it wouldn't be a problem for NATO to find enough men with one and send them to Ukraine. Russians fighting Russians

All I have read is how positive the EU and member nations are about getting Serbia in. The negotiations have already started and the only challenges are things like improving the legal system, which can't be too much of a barrier since there were pretty big protests in Bulgaria against corruption last year. Romania doesn't seem to be much better: It's because of Bulgaria/Romania that the EU tightened it's ascension requirements. Bulgaria/Romania made a pinky swear that they will continue with reforms after EU ascension, and then they drastically slowed down. Brussels don't want that to happen again.

Gervasius posted:In The Balkans news, Croatia is fighting a massive assault on reproductive rights, and our probable future minister of health has just announced that we his party wins the next parliamentary elections (and barring some miracle, they will), any woman trying to get an abortion will be need to undergo a mandatory "consultations" with a "spiritual leader", AKA catholic priest We'll just organize a referendum, like we do for every loving thing in this country Serious answer: That minor miracle could be declining of support for the current two largest parties (SDP, HDZ) and rapid increase of support for minor parties like ORaH. Mirela Holy said that she won't form a coalition with SDP, but if HDZ starts to turn more and more right, she might reconsider it. Current support is: HDZ - 25,5 SDP - 20,1 ORaH- 16,8 HNS - 2,7 HSS - 2,4 (Took it from here. Whatever the case is, Milanović gotta go. He is deeply unpopular and half the time enters into obnoxious slap fights with people. I'm pretty sure that if he retires, popularity if SDP will increase.

Ardennes posted:I wonder how much of it is because the Croatian economy has been pretty depressed since 08 (and he came in 2011?). I seem to remember there was a pretty fierce housing bubble in Croatia as old places were fixed up. Yes, most of it is because of economy. There wasn't a positive growth since 2008, and unemployment is in its twenties. Population growth is slightly declining due to brain drain and general depression. Now the current left-leaning government only inherited this problems, but it still made people disappointed since it didn't solved them. I can't really comment on the housing bubble since I don't know much about it. I guess it's a bit better than in 2008? Regarding Bosnia, most Croats feel that Dayton was a disaster. While it brought peace, it was a strained one and it created a deeply divided country (fun fact: Bosnian license plates don't show city or region the car is registered in, because of extortion and vandalism from other ethnic groups). It never solved the underlining issue and created a groundwork for a truly multinational state. Serbs have their own entity and want to get out, Croats are in a federation with Bosniaks and want a republic of their own, while Bosniaks want a centralized state. It's a mess where everyone is unhappy and is blaming each other for their situation. I really wish that some Bosnian goon (are there any?) could write a more indepth writeup. While I do have roots from there and some family still living, I only visited a couple of times and don't actually live there. My friend was recently travelling to Dubrovnik and stopped in Neum (the one coastal Bosnian city that divides Croatia into two parts). He said that he felt like the nineties were back, where you could enter a store and buy a music cassette for like a several BAM (Bosnian currency, Convertible Mark). To end on a bit of a positive note, gay marriage was legalized this September in Croatia. It passed without much difficulty because it was named Lifelong Partnership. It's still not the same as full legal marriage (I think they still can't adopt), but it's progress. Oh, and Gay Pride is hosted for years in Zagreb without major incidents, and this year was hosted in Osijek, biggest city in Slavonija also without major incidents. I think Split several years ago had some problems, but it was still successful. SaltyJesus posted:If that doesn't work I guess it's time to get serious about organizing a branch of Jediism or Dudeism. They didn't specify which spiritual leaders qualify. Or an orthodox priest. Doctor Malaver posted:No real consequences because the president is a figurehead. Josipovic would be the best choice since he's an intellectual and cultured person, even if a little anemic and ineffective. He's the most popular politician in the country but he's a member of the currently ruling "socialist" party that is doing terribly. His own party is dragging him down. Yeah, Josipović will most likely win barring some major catastrophe, but I wouldn't loose sleep even if Grabar-Kitarović wins. She seems like an educated and intelligent woman, but we'll see how her campaign goes. And Josipović isn't in SDP anymore, both he and Mesić renounced their membership from their political parties (SDP and HNS respectively) when they assumed presidency, and that's something that I'll like to see more in the future.
