BAEST MODE!!!

A couple of years ago Nintendo put out the Wii U and with it came New Super Mario Brothers U. The world was clamoring for yet another NSMB game with upgraded graphics and two new power ups. For some reason despite the demand many players were not satisfied. They said the game was boring, uninspired, or even downright bad. I don't think this was the majority opinion, but clearly people were burned out on NSMB, especially after two releases in one year.

I don't think this game requires a rousing defense, but I really like it. It's one of my favorite 2D Mario platformers, and it's my favorite 2D platformer on the system. The Wii U has some excellent 2D platformers too, namely Rayman Legends and DKCR: Tropical Freeze. So after playing way too much of a really bad game: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3656903 I'm going to relax and play a really good one.

So let's unwind, play some Mario, talk about the good and bad and enjoy some same ol', same ol'.

I'll be unlocking every level and exit and getting every star coin, although not in the main video. Any coins I miss will be picked up in bonus videos. It's a solo run so there won't be creative backstabbing and zany hijinks. It's just me playing the game.

New Super Luigi U is the add on DLC for NSMBU. 2013 was the Year of Luigi after all. Instead of just releasing a bunch of new levels as DLC the base game is re-imagined for Luigi and his jump and lack of traction. There's no Mario in this game, if you play four player co-op one player uses Nabbit instead.

The levels have a 100 second timer and are much shorter than NSMBU levels. They have trickier enemy placements, fewer power ups, and get much harder than the base game as you progress. You get the same number of levels as the base game and all for $20 ($30 if you buy the standalone disc.) Each level has a retro Luigi hidden in it, it's not a collectible, just a little touch the developers added. It's really well done DLC and even some who didn't like the base game thought Luigi U was great.

I hated the new Stupid Newbie avatar so much that I bought a new one for this user. Congrats, Lowtax.
Neat to see an LP of these games! Your laid back style of commentary is an interesting take, as opposed to what I would imagine would be a more frantic multiplayer commentary.

Judging from the comments I've seen in the Wii U thread, I think the general consensus is that New Super Mario Bros. U is a high-quality game, but with Nintendo you expect high-quality and it doesn't do a lot to set it apart from the previous entries in the series. Also just like you said the game does pick up after the first world, so it doesn't lead with its strongest foot. However, it's definitely still a well-executed platformer with some nice new additions (baby Yoshi is cute! :3: ), I just wish it did more to stand out. Best of luck 100%ing it!

Since you mentioned Super Mario 3D World, if you've played them both it would be interesting to hear you compare your experiences with the games!

Also, I definitely agree with your comment about Nintendo doing great DLC. They seem to have stuck with the "expansion pack" style that was popular with PC games back in the 90s, where you pay for a whole set of content as opposed to microtransactions, so I really hope that's successful because I'd like to see more companies follow that business model. I think the changes made for Luigi Bros. U are exactly the kind of thing the gameplay needed to be more exciting for players already accustomed to Mario platformers. Updating both side-by-side was a great idea. It's neat to see the changes that were made for the levels and it's good when you point out how those changes impact gameplay.

However, when you mentioned DLC you've gotten you didn't say anything about Mario Kart 8 - I know you wouldn't rather play Sonic '06 than get all those new tracks and characters, would you? :colbert:

In any case, looking forward to seeing the rest of the LP!

I'll be honest I was one of those people that thought that after NSMB Wii, the NSMB series felt like kind of a lazy way for Nintendo to make a quick buck. However I gotta say, after watching the first episode, I am definitely intrigued about this game and may even pick it up soon seeing as I'm on the look out for something to play on my Wii U that isn't Monster Hunter.

I'm really enjoying your laid back commentary style and I'm looking forward to the rest of this LP!

I see you're coping with Sonic 06 through horse tranquilizers, not that I can blame you.

I did get this game with my WiiU, but I usually play with my brother co-op so I'll probably wait until his Christmas break in December.

Having a childhood mainly consisting of Sega consoles (excluding the Game Boy, I'd never even SEEN an actual Nintendo console until 1998 as a 10 year old) I don't hold much affiliation with most early Mario games, though I acknowledge they're very good, to say the least. So - having played the DS New Super Mario Bros and not having much of an opinion on it - this game (being a continuation on the 'New' series) didn't entice me to buy a Wii U.

Truth be told, it still doesn't, but I look forward to seeing what this game is capable of all the same.

I never knew why, but I always thought the little waggle spin move they added in the first NSMB was the best thing to add to Mario. Making it akin to jerking the controller as a little kid playing NES brings it full circle to me. Doing the twirl always made my jumps seem more precise.

I like this game OK (although I haven't really spent the time with it that it rightfully deserves as I ended up playing 3D World instead), but I think it would be liked a bit more in gamer circles if Nintendo had been a little more spendy when it comes to presentation. I mean, there probably are better ways to convince people of the power of your new console other than a game that looks pretty much exactly like its console predecessor if you squint. NSMB 2 actually ended up looking more impressive if you ask me, I really like the 3D effect used here.

I don't mean to sound like a graphics whore, but if Nintendo decides to keep the series going, they'd better come up with a fresh look. The retro-ish 2D art used in the 3D World games would be great, for instance.

I've played and loved it, so there will definitely be comparisons, as well as with the other NSMB games.

I like the original NSMB, it's rough but there's a solid fun game there. The sequels definitely improve on it though. I wish they'd bring back the Koopa shell powerup. It was really fun to use even if it wasn't that useful.

The one reason I couldn't get into these games is the traction on the surfaces, everything was just too slippery. Every level felt like an ice level (the ice levels felt like super ice levels). Doesn't look like a lot has changed here.

I really didn't like this game through world 2-1. For some reason (that I haven't been able to put my finger on despite many attempts doing so) those levels just don't feel right. After that, though, I loved the whole game.

Do you like Super Mario World? It's considered to be among the "slipperiest" games of the series by some. It looks as if Nintendo realized this and only put a bunch of ice levels in the game (I can honestly only remember one or two).

It's funny you mention the comparisons between this game and 3D World; I've recently watched a 3D World LP and I can't help but feel slightly :smugjones: having seen how things progressed after Mario Bros. U (not to mention how little things seems to have really changed since the DS version of the 'New' series). Good to see things are starting to step up in terms of difficulty and interesting level designs though, albeit at an immensely slow pace.

As for the next world, I was going to write a long-winded post about how we're pretty much sure what the gimmick will be for Frosted Glacier, and that maybe there'd be more intriguing level designs in the tropical Sparkling Waters... But then - somehow - Bruceski changed my mind (thinking about it now, my guess would be underwater segments. Which doesn't entice me in the slightest).

My vote goes to ice world.

As someone who has played and beaten this game I can confirm that, yes, the ice world is immeasurably better than the water world. Neither of the two is particularly great though, mind, at least in my opinion; things only really start to get interesting in the world immediately after that, the poison swamp world, which also happens to include the most visually interesting levels in the entire game.

The thing about New Super Mario Bros is that it strikes me as what would happen if Nintendo never did Super Mario Bros 3 and just kept going in the same way they did 1 and 2 for the rest of the series. They add new minor mechanics but overall the game stays largely the same and doesn't do anything to surprise you. I still play it, but the "new" title really just doesn't fit it anymore.

Really though Rafter, will be neat to see you show off all of the different powerups since now you have a few you haven't used yet. Looking forward to hearing you ruminant on them. Also laughed at the story about you and your Dad not figuring out how to beat Bowser! Really great that your Dad actually played games with you sometimes.

Appreciate you showing off the Koopa Kid patterns. Shame that the fights are so easy. I think Nintendo could get some extra mileage out of the assets if they made a "hard mode" version of boss fights.

Yeah, like you said for the Ghost House at first you were pressing up against the scrolling screen edge, not the hidden wall.

Shame about the Wendy fight though, since she was one of the best fights in SMB3. Although I didn't think much of it while playing I guess the primary challenge really is from the levels instead of the bosses. Again though, having something like an extra world featuring harder boss battles seems like it would be a good idea. Nintendo, are you listening?

The bosses normally aren't important to me but there was something about this boss. I took the slower method of killing them and they still barely were able to deploy their secondary attack and that was just sad.

Did you mistake Cheep Cheeps for Bloopers in this episode? Do I have to shake my head and waggle my finger disappointingly at you? Squids are the ones that bloop!

Again, enjoying the casual run through the levels. Laughed at the Toad House - even if you don't normally use them, I'm glad you're showing them off for the LP. I actually like that Nintendo keeps doing creative things with them. Though they've basically become minigames, I think that harkens back to the matching games from SMB3.

I liked your commentary on the fortress about adding just an extra room to make the time be more of a factor. I would be good to hear more of your thoughts like that throughout the LP.

Also, appreciate you being productive with doing new episodes. These are good to watch after work to unwind. Looking forward to the next one!
