So I have a question re: air cooling. I'm mainly just playing around for fun and to learn at this point so theres nothing seriously at stake in what I'm doing here.

I have some case fans that I hooked up to one of those fan controllers (NZXT Sentry 3 or something) but it seems like the slowest I can set the fans on it is either 40% or off. 40% seems like it might be too high RPM, and also the fan controller is just unnecessary so I'm going to probably return it or just use it in a different computer for shits and giggles.

My mobo (gigabyte gaming 7 ) has 8 fan headers I guess and all are PWM? I think I'm actually gonna be able to do what I want to do with the mobo stock better than with that thing, which is just have more fans but lower RPM (quieter). Anyway I guess my question is, is there any way without me disassembling all that poo poo to quantify if I can get the fans to be slower than 40% capacity off the mobo?

I'm also bored n lonely at work and wanted somebody to talk to

Is this a controller limitation or just an observation? Because I have noticed massive differences in fans themselves - some fans will just stop at XX%, whereas others can go way further down on the same input.

I cant honestly answer wrt the fans but I can say its definitely a controller limitation. I'm going to rewire it all tomorrow and see what I can come up with

Maybe I should look at getting a different controller  I dont need one but its just fun to play around

The one I got was very highly rated and that's how I chose it. But god drat going from 0% to 40% is a big jump to me

I suspect most laptops you buy these days will be able to push 2x 4k monitors- i would google the specific laptops youre looking at with that question, or ask that specific question for specific laptop models in the laptop thread and somebody will definitely help you out there

I have sennheiser pc350s. Probably overpriced garbage but nobody has ever had any issues with mic clarity. I like that i can mute it by swinging the boom up. Great build quality. They're just as good 4 years later as they were the day i got them.

They're comfortable to wear and get loud enough to hurt my ears while still seeming to sound good.

They're discontinued but can be purchased still and have been replaced, probably with much the same thing, but i have no experience with the replacement

Wanting to turn an old computer into a secondary gaming computer. It's got an older Pentium anniversary edition (socket 1150) and some Frankenstein combo of 11gb ddr3 and a gtx1060 in it right now.

Debating whether it's a better idea to just grab a 4790k or something off eBay and just call it a day or if im better off throwing some sort of coffee lake Pentium and ddr4 in there?

The reality seems to me that if I put the 4790k in there that is effectively the best the computer can be without changing the mobo and ram eventually regardless. My current desktop has an 8700k so I guess having maximum compatibility between the two is a pretty solid benefit.

I feel like writing this out effectively answered my questions, any angles im missing?

If you want a (relatively) cheap workstation with a lot of memory check out this one built with used server parts, or you can build one yourself in a similar fashion. DDR3 server platforms allow you to take advantage of all the used registered ECC DDR3 out there, which is not only much cheaper than DDR4 but even cheaper than unbuffered DDR3 these days.

Just last week I threw this together as an upgrade to my work desktop:
CPU: Xeon L5640 - I had this lying around, I will probably put a couple of $35 X5670s in eventually
CPU cooler: Hyper 212 - I had this lying around too; some server LGA1366 boards need LGA2011-compatible coolers, but the 212 works with some added standoffs.
Motherboard: Supermicro X8DTH-iF - $80
RAM: 6x Samsung 8GB 1333MHz ECC RDIMM - $117
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro - $100 (needs to be full eATX, for the board)
PSU: EVGA 650 GQ - $70, a while ago for a different build; used this one because the mobo needs 2 8-pin ATX12V connectors.
GPU: an old Radeon 7750 I had already; not needed if running headless

Buying 32GB of DDR4 will cost you almost as much as this whole system with 48GB (which can go up to 192GB if you want to pay for it), though you do have power and size as downsides. There was a similarly priced ATX motherboard with only 6 DIMM slots, but I figured a more spacious board would make it easier to keep things cool and the expandability could be useful.

thanks for this, this seems like a fun project

That makes sense, and suggests that motor wear is one of the major things that kills HDDs; the other is probably a sudden head crash due to impact and is more unpredictable.

The only thing is the hypothetical "20 years" figure is probably an underestimate based on modern drives (given the advertised millions of hours average before failure,) and an overestimate based on the usefulness of a drive of that age. Without trying to do some excessive research, I'm guessing that in 1998 the average consumer HDD was in the 1-10 GB range, maybe in the low tens of GB, and nowadays would be totally obsolete based on speed and capacity alone. So if there was still a drive of that vintage in running condition, it would've been replaced before dying based on the uselessness of the drive and host PC hardware.

I think the fact that I've got a lightly used 2 TB drive from 9 years ago says something about the more limited advances in HDDs and in contrast the more rapid advances in SSD technology.

(Also, I think it's fair to guess those old drives are still probably reasonably reliable based on their limited spin-ups, time in operation, and low powered-on hours.)

In 1998 I had a dell with a 13.2gb HD and boy was I happy with my unlimited space
