If you want a vision of the future...

Full game will be released on November 11th in the US, November 13th in Europe.
Demo is out today (September 23rd) on PS4/XB1 for the US, tomorrow for EU. It's also been out in Asia for a week.

There’s also a demo out on PS3/360 with a terrible hybrid engine. Let’s stick to next-gen for this thread.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn-3GHiufRo

Yeah, yeah, you’ll probably just play FIFA 2015 anyway. For the uninitiated, Pro Evolution Soccer (also known in some parts of the world as Winning Eleven) is a once-venerable football video games series dating back to the International Superstar Soccer games for Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64. The series arguably hit its peak in the PS2 era with PES5 and PES6, considered by many to be some of the best football games ever made. EA’s offerings at the time with the FIFA series were considered laughable in comparison. How things have changed...

As FIFA became an increasingly polished and popular AAA experience, Konami struggled in transitioning to the PS3/360 era and moving away from its 8-directional gameplay system it had used since the 16-bit games. A number of blatantly unfinished games with broken gameplay and stripped-down modes were released, culminating in the relatively playable PES 2013, which might have gotten a better reception had that not also been the year that FIFA took massive steps forward in gameplay and presentation. Konami promised an entirely new engine for PES 2014, and proceeded to deliver a complete loving disaster. Horrid player AI, exploit and bug-filled gameplay, and barely-there game modes revealed the game to be a ridiculous rush job -- it’s clear there simply wasn’t time to develop a new engine AND a decent game around it.

All that said, the demo for PES 2015 is out and boy howdy have they made massive strides in creating an honest-to-goodness football game out of the embarrassing shambles that was PES 2014. It feels quite a bit different from FIFA 2015 -- most notably, both dribbling and tackling are less precise and players accelerate more slowly. Obviously both are football games and it’s a bit hard to quantify just what separates them without using pointless descriptors like which one is more "realistic". I’ll just say that if you’re interested in an alternative to FIFA but have been turned off by recent PES games (and especially last year’s), maybe consider giving the PES 2015 demo a try and discuss it here.

The teams available in the demo are:
Bayern Munich
Real Madrid
FC Barcelona
Juventus FC
S.S.C. Napoli
Athletic Club
Atletico Madrid

If you want a vision of the future...
So, what's new?

Compared to last year...a lot.

Gameplay:
-The AI is ridiculously improved on both sides of the ball.
-Player responsiveness has been dramatically improved. You often felt 'locked' into certain animations in PES 2014, that's not nearly as much of an issue now.
-Passing has been toned down. Effective through balls are much more difficult to perform, and defenders are much better at intercepting balls on the ground. Low passes performed from difficult situations, like a backheel pass performed at a sprint, are much less likely to succeed.
-Keepers are much, much better and more difficult to beat. In 2014 there were certain spots in the box where you would be guaranteed a goal, that's much less of the case now. They're also much better at charging forward to intercept long through balls, even out of the box.
-Both dribbling and tackling are less precise. Trying to go too fast in a lot of situations will result in a lost possession or a missed tackle/foul.
-Shots are more powerful, but less accurate. Headers have been toned down significantly.

Tactics:
-The tactics slider system from last year has been completely overhauled and streamlined.
-There's a new feature called 'Flexible Formation' that allows you to have your players' positions change depending on if your team has possession. In the demo, only Juventus's default formation uses this feature, with the wing backs becoming LB/RB on defense, and going way up the pitch as LMF/RMF when you have the ball.

Modes:
-Apparently the Master League Online mode is now more similar to FUT, and is called myClub. Not too much information here.
-Master League offline has been overhauled, and will feature more complex transfers and scouting.

I've been playing the demo all week since sneaking it from the Hong Kong store. Loving the gameplay so much! Was planning to buy FIFA this year, but decided to hold off at least until it's clear how customizable the team editing will be on PS4.

The community has always been really active in terms of making option files to correct the unlicensed stuff, and PS4 allows you to import save files through the USB drive so I can't imagine it'll be an issue. It was definitely done on PS3 for last year's game.

I thought i'd read that Sony hadn't confirmed that save transfers were possible yet? If it has the same editing and sharing as previous Pro Evo games, then it's a no brainer for me. The look and feel of this new game is just sublime. My team is Arsenal though, and having to play as "West London" instead would be tough.

Yeah, it plays so nice

Even if there are no full option file transfers (which I'm really skeptical about, I'm sure we'll hear more soon), you'll still be able to change team names in edit mode and assign custom badges.

Is there any interest in an effortpost explaining what exactly the attributes, player roles/skill cards, and tactical options do? The systems in PES can be a little opaque (to be generous) for the uninitiated, and a lot of stuff changed for this year.

The thing about PES for me is it plays faster than fifa, there's none of this omg the striker is going to break through at walking pace score while my defenders select and deselect one after the other
This was mostly borne out by the YouTube video I saw

refers to an older iteration of the game on a different platform

I'll be trying this game out. Sounds good.

Couple of questions: is there a manager mode that let's you transfer players etc?

I'd listening still a thing with this game (Manchester Reds or some poo poo)?

There's a manager mode, in PES it's called Master League and historically it's been one of the best things about the series. Last year it was a buggy, unfinished shambles, but they've promised an improved experience in 2015. They haven't shown any in-depth previews of it yet though.

Licensing is still a thing unfortunately. PES does have a robust editor and there's a community of people who make save files correcting all the team names and giving them proper kits and badges. The Premiership is unlicensed except for Manchester United. All the teams in Ligue 1, La Liga, Serie A, Eredivisie, Brasileirão A and a bunch of other leagues are licensed. The other big missing license other than the Premier League is the Bundesliga aside from Bayern Munich, B04, BVB, and Schalke. For a full list of licenses check the wikipedia page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Evolution_Soccer_2015

Online play has fine netcode when playing with friends, disconnect cheating online against strangers is rampant though. Nobody knows if anything is being done to address that this year. There are also 11v11 online lobbies. The most popular mode is Master League Online, somewhat akin to FUT where you make your own team of guys and acquire money to buy better players.

There is create a pro, called Become a Legend mode. Offline-only last year and wasn't a super-polished experience.

If you want a vision of the future...
Player Attributes Explained

Attacking Prowess: How active the AI will be in finding space and getting into good positions when you have possession. Also affects how far up the pitch the player will tend to go.
Ball Control: First touch control when receiving a pass or collecting a loose ball.
Dribbling: Ball control and responsiveness when dribbling. Higher Dribbling ratings also unlock certain skills and will make the player perform more effective touches and turns when dribbling normally. Very fast players will not necessarily be fast dribblers if their Dribbling attribute is too far below their Explosive Power attribute, and great dribblers won't necessarily be able to change directions while dribbling very quickly if they are big and don't have good Explosive Power.
Low Pass: Accuracy when passing on the ground.
Lofted Pass: Accuracy when passing in the air. Also affects corner kicks.
Finishing: Shooting accuracy. Has no bearing on header accuracy, even towards goal.
Place Kicking: Accuracy when taking free kicks. Keep in mind that your passing and finishing attributes don’t affect free kicks, though both this and the Lofted Pass attribute affect corners.
Swerve: Ability to make the ball curl when performing placed shots or taking free kicks.
Header: Accuracy when heading, has no bearing on actually winning headers.
Defensive Prowess: How active the AI will be in getting back on defense, covering open players, and intercepting passes.
Ball Winning: Accuracy and speed when performing tackles.
Kicking Power: Power of not just shots, but low and lofted passes as well as set pieces.
Speed: Top speed. Also has an effect on acceleration.
Explosive Power: Acceleration and speed of the first step, as well as agility when changing direction. Strongly affected by the player’s height and weight.
Body Balance: The player’s strength, very important for protecting the ball when dribbling, making tackles, and or positioning to receive contested passes or headers. Strongly affected by the player’s height and weight.
Jump: How high a player can jump when going for headers, or when a goalie goes up to bunch away a high ball.
Stamina: How much time and activity it takes for the player to get tired. Players get a number of stat and AI behavior penalties when they're out of stamina.
Goalkeeping: Goalkeeper positioning within the net and intelligence for when to come out of goal to stop through balls.
Saving: The ability to actually stop shots, and hold onto the ball instead of punching it away.
Form: Affects likelihood of the player to have better Form arrows in any given match.
Injury Resistance: Likelihood of receiving an injury.
Weak Foot Use: How frequently the player uses their weak foot for shots and passes.
Weak Foot Accuracy: How the weak foot compares to the dominant foot. A player like Pedro with 4’s in Weak Foot Accuracy and Weak Foot Use is essentially ambidextrous.

Weight and height are also VERY VERY important, plus some hidden stats like leg length (essentially ‘center of gravity’) running style, etc. Basically it’s what you’d expect, taller and heavier players are stronger but less agile than players with the same attribute scores, but different body types. This is why, for example, Neymar feels quicker than Ronaldo, even though Ronaldo has both higher speed and the same explosive power.

Finally, those different colors on the Attributes are more important than you think. Each ‘tier’ has a fairly pronounced effect, so there’s a big difference between a player with a green 77 stat vs a player with a white 74 in the same stat. When comparing players put a premium on that, don’t treat a 94 (dark orange) as the same thing as a 95 (red).
Green is 75-79
Yellow is 80-89
Orange is 90-94
Red is 95-99

Treat each point in each of these 'tiers' as marginally more valuable than the ones in the previous tier.

The 'Combined Ability' attributes should generally be ignored -- they’re just formulated based on weighted combinations of the player attributes, so you get much more complete information by looking at the actual attributes. Combined Ability scores don't have a direct effect on player performance.

Overall Rating is also something that you shouldn’t pay too much attention to. It’s weighted to an algorithm based on the stats the game thinks are important for the position, and doesn't know anything about what you are looking for at that position or what kinds of attributes you value more. As long as a player is being played in one of their preferred positions (full blue/green/red on the position chart), their stats don’t change even if their ‘Overall Rating’ does. If you play them in a secondary position or out of position though, they do get a performance penalty. So, just because Neymar is an 88 at SS and an 84 at LWF doesn’t mean he’s “better” at SS -- the game just weighs his crazy high dribbling stats more heavily at SS than WF.

If you want a vision of the future...
Tactics

There’s a new tactics system this year. Thank god, because the sliders in 2014 were terrible.

There are two main parts to creating tactics for your team -- the formation and position roles, and your team instructions.

Formation and player roles
There’s not really too much to explain here. Select a base formation, move guys around, press Square to change their position assignment if they’re in a spot where that’s an option. The player’s position on the pitch matters quite a bit, arguably more than the position assignment -- a LMF placed way back on the pitch will act more like a wingback, while one placed far up will act more like a winger. The players themselves also have a huge effect on how they position themselves during the game -- for instance, it doesn’t make that huge of a difference if you’ve got Neymar on the left corner of the box and assign him to be a LWF or a SS, especially if you’ve got Flexible positioning set in your team instructions.

Team Instructions
This is super important and a lot less intuitive than the formation stuff. There are now separate team instructions screens for Offense and Defense, you can use L1/R1 to switch between them.

Offense

Attacking Styles:
Counter-Attack will make your team run quickly up the pitch once you gain possession of the ball. Possession will make players fan out to give you more passing support.

Build Up:
Short-pass and Long-pass are the options here. What this setting seems to really do is affect how players treat the press -- with short-pass they will try to move laterally to make space to receive the ball on the ground, while with long-pass they will try to create distance so they can receive a lofted pass over the defender’s head.

Attacking area:
Wide will make players cut towards the touch line, Center will make them more likely to make runs inside. Setting your attacking area to Wide also makes you LB/RB much more aggressive in making forward runs, while Center makes your AMF/CMF/DMF players come farther forward to support the attack and make runs into the box.

Positioning:
Flexible or Maintain Formation. Flexible will allow your players much more freedom to roam from their position and switch positions with other players in a fluid way. However, this can also make players in key positions not be there when you need them to be. If your strategy revolves around crossing the ball to a target man, Maintain Formation might be a better choice so your 193cm CF doesn’t decide to switch positions with your 170cm AMF mid-play. Note that Juventus uses Maintain Formation in their tactics so that Llorente doesn’t run all over the place and the wings don’t cut into the middle and make them unable to get back into a defensive position. For a team like Bayern Munich where they’ve got 2 AMF’s and 3 strikers who can all basically play each others’ position, Flexible works like a charm.

Support range:
A slider. Essentially, a higher support range means more attacking play, lower support range means players will stop a forward run to provide pass support more often. This is especially important to pay attention to if you want to play a wide game, in which case you’ll need to have your support range on the higher end.

Numbers in attack:
Many, Medium, or Few. This affects how far forward your fullbacks and defensive midfielders will come to support the attack. This is also highly dependent on those players’ player roles and their Attacking Prowess attribute, so experiment with this depending on your team. A Left Back with the “Offensive Fullback” role will still make forward runs even if this setting is at “Few”, for example.

Defense

Defensive Styles:
All-Out Defense will make your players run back to try and get behind the ball when they lose possession, Frontline Pressure will make them press all over the field. A team like Real Madrid with blazing fast wingers uses All-Out Defense so that they get the ball back deep within their own half, then use Ronaldo and Bale to toast the high defensive line. If you want to initiate a more technical counter attack from the midfield and try to dominate possession, Frontline Pressure might be a better fit.

Containment area:
This is a little counter-intuitive and the game doesn't explain it too well. Essentially, "Wide" containment will make multiple players close down on a ball carrier in their area; "Middle" containment will make them try to cover open men and deny the passing game. I usually prefer "Middle" for this setting.

Pressuring:
Aggressive makes your players come in closer against a player who’s dribbling or receiving a pass, but make them more prone to being beaten with a deft touch. Conservative makes them hang back a bit more and disrupt passing lanes.

Defensive Line:
A slider. Higher means the defense will come farther forward when you are in possession, putting more pressure on the midfield but making you more susceptible to counters.

Compactness:
How narrow the defense is and how likely a defender is to come out of position to make a challenge. Being more compact pairs well with a deep defensive line, wide containment, and conservative pressure, and vice-versa.

Numbers in defense:
Many, Medium, or Few. Also highly affected by your individual players’ Defense Awareness attributes and personal playing styles.

There’s also a feature new to PES 2015 called Fluid Formations that can be turned on or off, which lets you change your team instructions and player positions depending on if you are in or out of possession. I’m not convinced this is worth the extra stamina drain as your players run all over the place, but I’m sure some people will come up with some smart stuff with this feature. It might be more worthwhile used in reverse -- that is, make Messi an AMF in possession, but a CF when out of possession so he stays upfield and doesn’t tire himself out playing defense as a midfielder according to the team instructions.

It's definitely networking related because if you disable networking on your PS4 the issue disappears.
