I love that these are built as chassis with body panels attached at the final stage of production - so for a while the factory workers are driving around and testing these tiny viper go-karts with no panels on them. They look adorable :3

Back when I was still an advertising/car photographer, a colleague and I did a shoot at the Viper plant, which is actually about a mile from my house. That is the coolest shop floor I've ever been on, and those pre-body Viper go-karts are just as awesome and adorable in real life as you can imagine. I desperately wanted to take one for a spin, but they weren't having it.

Beautiful car, Das Volk. Congrats. Also, I totally support your "Drive it not hide it" philosophy.

They just cut the price of a brand new Viper by $15k to bring it down to $85k. How can that dealer justify selling a USED 2013 for $92k? I feel bad for the poor uninformed sap who buys that thinking he's getting a "killer deal".

The MSRP on that one was closer to $140k...so even after the $15k discount it's still a good deal.

Probably 1/10th the number of pictures people with stanced Audi wagons post.

I love how they've gone back the the GTS style lines. Something about the headlights doesn't photograph well, I think it's the running lights that make the headlights look cheap or something. Granted, I have not seen one in person, it's likely a non-issue.

Rest of the car looks amazing though. Very nice

Yup, I think my favorite car there was that Alpina Z1. I'm actually having a hard time finding the space to really go WOT so actual video may have to wait until I can get it on the track. Thunderhill is running some days, but I'm for sure at Laguna with Norcal SAAC the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Does anyone have any definitive information on the DB levels of the Viper? I'm worried the side pipes will be more likely to trigger the 92DB limit, and I'm curious if anyone's found any kind of solution.

Laguna Seca had a 90 dB limit and I was promptly meatballed for exceeding it at 94.9 dB, which means you get a lecture and have to sit the rest of the session out. This was after short shifting into fourth and bogging it past the sound booth, on advice of Graham Henckel. Even Bushido exceeded it in his Gen IV, whereas in the past he had never had any issues. It was foggy at times, and the sound reflects off of the fog and adds a few dB to the reading. So this meant that for the rest of the day, I had to bog it in fourth gear at partial throttle from before turn 5 to after turn 6. Yuck, what a pisser!

Also, the car is amazing. Do they make them blue with white stripes still, that was by far my faviorite colour combination.

I dunno man. The 800HP twin-turbo Viper I saw at a local track a couple of years ago seemed to be plenty loud, it drowned out literally every other car there, including straight-piped track specials.

Which is to say, I fully support turboing the Viper. Blow out the sound equipment for good.

The power meters in it claim about 150 ft-lbs when moving off idle, so yeah.

Time for an update. I'm taking the car to Laguna Seca next Friday, and this will be a good opportunity to get in some time on my second favorite track. Then off to LV for the SRT trackday the following monday.

I've been driving the car hard and a few things have come up. One, the stock suspension is totally inadequate - it pitches, it dives, it yaws, and none of that is good. The car needs to be planted and predictable, and while it's extremely good it can be a lot better, so I'm installing MCS two way adjustables (remote reservoir) with some custom springs and upgraded swaybar links.

The American Car Curse has returned a bit too, the trans is grinding into reverse unless in a gear first, and I think the third gear synchro was shot from day 1. The stereo is still screwed up too. The dealership I took it to was REALLY bad though and I've got appointments lined up for a much better place to look at it as well as a case open with the SRT team.

I'll get some video of the track day up once it happens.

It actually really bums me out that as a Viper enthusiast since they first came out for the sheer American vulgarity that it stood for compared to anything else contemporary, that on Chrysler's halo car, their one big shot, the hey guys seriously this is the best we can do to make up for everything thats happened has issues like that already popping up.

Or maybe its because its low volume that poo poo is happening? I'm just trying to understand. I thought they made such a big deal out of making drat sure all the issues were polished and saying how much time and effort went in to crafting this car for its big comeback after going away for a while.

I suspect part of the problem with DV's car is that it was abused in the dealership. But it should definitely be better than it is considering the price.

Not sure about the tranny, I've heard good things about the Tremec unit. Surprised reverse is synchronized at all.

The only 991 you get at viper prices is the base carerra which is docile as gently caress and slow as balls, by performance car terms.

It would also likely have as many quality problems.

I know the original was a vaguely beefed up version of the original Borg-Warner T-56 (more like the LT1 Camaro T-56 than the LS1 Tremec T-56) but I think after that car, they switched to the TR6060.

from an SRT specialist I've been working with:

quote:

Tell them to order a new transmission because if they do a “70%” sheet that they would need the cost to replace it is a better option. We have replaced a transmission before already on a low mile GenV so it is not unheard of. Tell them to get on it; there is 1 on back order now (part has been updated like 6 times!) so the sooner they order the sooner they will release one for you. Have them order it as a “vehicle down” order.
