I like the new Gmail app too but it's annoying that it seems to have only one swipe action instead of one for each direction, let alone the short/long swipe actions that Mailbox had.

You could give the BBC news app a whirl. I believe you can do a lot of customisation to remove the UK-focussed tabs if you're on the wrong side of the Atlantic.
