TOOT BOOT posted:

I think Melora Creager from Rasputina might have gone from quirky insane to insane insane. :(

She's gone from insane insane to bat poo poo crazy insane now. Apparently, Jack White has been personally identified as her stalker/tormentor. This was posted on her blog in early November...

Trust that I am focused on my art (I've completed a whole album), and real experiences with real people.

I'm not a "victim", but I've been victimized, and can get no justice. The FBI only accepts complaints through their website, and they get thousands of "tips" a day.

The physical crimes happened over a year ago. I didn't report them for fear of retaliation by the hacker/stalker.

(He was in our bank accounts- our money was in danger), and because I wasn't believed.

(Interestingly, I hear from joking men who think this is a PR stunt, and sympathetic women who completely understand because something similar has happened to them.)

Maybe he became obsessed with me from my videos. Last Fall, he demanded that I make a pornographic video for him. I refused to do it, but really fell apart at that point.

Experts write to me saying that all this is possible with micro-cameras (that are easy to get), key-logging, root-kits, and a remote access program.

My paranoia comes from real cause, not from delusions or mental illness.

How could I possibly entertain the idea that Jack White is the culprit? Listen to his last album.

The stalker later indicated he was drunk when he asked for pornography from me. He seemed to be someone who was angry because I spurned him.

Take the song, "I Think I Found the Culprit" or "Just One Drink". These songs describe my situation last summer. The whole album is about watching and tricking women, drinking, and being spurned.

But I'm just like you. I'm just a struggling person. I have no way to ask him about this, and a criminal would never admit to their crime anyway, especially a famous person.

But I was never really able to tell who I was talking to. At one point, they indicated it was more than one person.

Hackers are known to sit quietly after they get in, sometimes for years unnoticed. They told me they'd been in my system for a year before the trouble started.

Was it a number of people?

Did they have a profit motive?

Was the porno request intended blackmail?

That's what I felt.

It's hard to get past something so violating and unsolved. Most of us, most of the time, don't realize that we can say what we want in this world. I am saying these things. I can. I never hurt anybody with what I say. I'm putting forth theories, ideas and questions.

Thank you again for listening, and sharing your own true stories with me.

Please keep writing to me at rasputinaville@mac.com

Love,

Melora

Fun Shoe
Once upon a time, when Kazaa was the favored program for sharing music on the internet, I downloaded a song which later disappeared in a fatal HDD crash and which I have never found again.

What I remember:
I listened to it in high school, so has to be older than 2004.
It was labeled as being by Christian Death, but Kazaa being what it was this may or may not be the case. I swear I have listened to every song I can find by them.
It had some pseudo-egyptian instruments / melodic ornamentation.
The verse or bridge ended with the line "And the bell... strikes [four?]"
The lyrics of the chorus went "My, my, where am I, or will you not tell? This is too dark for heaven, and too bright for hell." which oh-so-cleverly changed in the last chorus to "Too bright for heaven / too dark... for hell."

If I could just find this goddamn song which has haunted me on and off for the past decade, I would be so happy my goth card would be permanently revoked. Anyone?

Since neo-folk has a pretty big crossover with goth, I suspect some of you might like Rome. He's one of the neofolk artists who doesn't have a whole suspiciously right wing/outright Nazi worship thing going on as well, so that's a bonus!

That's pretty good, but I think I'd call it shoegaze more than goth.

It's like She Wants Revenge -- a lot of their stuff is some of the gothiest music to come from a not-goth band in the last decade or so.

Not that there are many identifiably goth bands left in the world, to be honest.

One major problem with goths, and I know/have known way more goths than anyone ever should probably, is that in my experience they won't listen to music that clearly sounds like it shares the goth aesthetic but isn't a band that literally looks/labels themselves as "goth".
That's always been funny to me because goth is *all* about aesthetics. There's no real political coherency or consistency, like maybe punk. It's just mood, look, and some gloomy themes. That's how I think about it.

Prosymna is the best gothiest band right now:

Alter Der Ruine is cool and good. From Tucson:

Some cliche goth music (that's also good!):

Ok Mylene Farmer isn't a "goth musician" but a popular French pop star, but she's also the gothiest goth that ever goth'd, and I'll defend that until I'm buried in the cold, dark, unforgiving ground:

Can't wait to check out all these links. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more goth-influenced music in the near future as the 80s seems to be popular again. It's definitely already happening with metal. A lot of black metal bands are trying to bring in a post-punk sound, or have a goth side project (like Beastmilk, now known as Grave Pleasures).

I think we are, especially with some relatively popular bands like Austra. Maybe it's a reaction against how so much indie music now is so twee it makes your teeth hurt, at least it does for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuoQgkPKplQ

The interesting think about that video is how dark and gloomy it is, and how goth it is, but it's like ... a 19th century goth. It's not the cobwebs-and-candelabras thing that's been so played out (though I do love that stuff). But the themes in there are like old-school goth-as-gently caress occultism. You expect they'll start burning witches or something.

I dunno. Maybe some self-identified goth types don't like it because it's more popular. I've heard the derisive term "hipster goth," like oh please! Did they think this stuff was obscure in the 1980s in Britain? It wasn't incredibly popular, but goth bands were charting at the time, on pop TV shows, etc.

There's an Australian group called Veloceraptor! who have a track called "Leeches" that I mistook for an Echo and the Bunnymen jam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIBC6RpVyvg

Scanning through my goth playlist there's a lot of 'dark industrial' stuff than I realized mostly because they were always monster dance floor fillers at our terrible local Goth/Dark Alternative club 'Faith' things like Distillat by Das Ich (usually the VNV remix which is tight but not as good as the original mix), "Like a Prayer" a Madonna cover by BiGod20 got butts on floors like crazy and Dead Stars by Covenant.

What Wolfshiem "Once in a Lifetime" was always a playlist staple, they always meshed well with New Order.

And before I forget - mother loving - INKUBUS SUKUBUS, lovingly known by my older goth/pagan mates as 'Inky Sucky' - I always found their 'Vampyre' schtick more tolerable than say 'London After Midnight' perhaps because lyrically they were a tiny bit more creative but I do love LAM as well.

I tend to write-off a lot of the "newer" goth bands because they're way too campy for me (though that's kind of hilarious of me to think since goth is campy as hell) and lack that post-punk/deathrock sound. Though at the same time there are people that prefer the more poppy side of goth, so I guess it just depends on your preference. Usually I'll try to listen to a newer band that's described to have a goth sound and it just doesn't interest me, which is a bummer because I could sure use some new bands.

Yeah I've been hearing about witch house too. It even has a Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_house_(music_genre)

††† (which you linked to -- yeah there's a tendency for band names with weird Unicode characters in them) is actually a side project of the Deftones' lead singer, and apparently there's some debate as to whether it qualifies as "true" witch house (lol). Then again, people seem to be classifying Zola Jesus and Crystal Castles as being in the genre, so

also the correct answer to the question "can X artist be qualified as true genre Y?" is and should always be "who gives a gently caress shut up". Genres are useful terms as general descriptors of an artist to give a general idea of their sound while describing them. but once it gets taken to a level of debating whether any artist "truly belongs" in a genre or not, it's time to stop because that is an entirely pointless ego-driven endeavor about categorism, not music.
