You know, just as an aside to all this, it would be pretty loving hilarious if it comes out that Un is dead like a day or two before that Seth Rogan movie is supposed to drop. Wasn't that originally done with Il in mind, in fact, and then re-wrote when it turned out he was kaput? But all joking aside, how long was it again between when Il stopped making public appearances, and when the North Korean government officially announced his death?

It would probably get a little weird providing for KJU's every whim and noticing how completely ignorant and useless he is. I imagine the urge to watch him die would probably get kind of strong at times. Like when the Russian nobles tried to get Emperor Paul to abdicate but once they sat him down at the desk they were like "you know what let's just beat this motherfucker to death"

My pet theory (which most likely BS) is that he's really just a gimp of the system and he finally refused to co-operate so they broke his legs and he agreed to do one more public appearance. That's the best part with NK, all theories are plausible. That said, I don't think the North Korean people are stupid and most see through many of the lies. Obviously a percentage are fully indoctrinated but based on what I've seen in the limited documentaries available, most see the wood for the trees and are just trying to live their lives in the system they are under. I'm perhaps naïvely optimistic on the eventual reunification. Its obviously going to require reconstruction on a scale unseen before, but the Koreans culturally have a strong work ethic and interest in rebuilding--it could not be more diametrically different situation than the nation building attempted in the Middle East over the last 50 years. I recognize those who say China wants it as a buffer because why wouldn't you if you have the option, but when the walls fall they're not going to want to single handedly foot the bill/deal with refugees.

Korean delegates are all smiles now, but it's hard to tell how much of it is nervous fawning vs. real confidence in their position. Korean government to come to terms with what it's done to its own people, or if it's going to be an endless cycle of whitewashing and blaming outside forces. Korea has a history of being kind of a pawn between big powers and they know how to play the victim card pretty well on a national level (especially w/their own media), not to mention "deflection of blame" is something of an artform over here in my experience. Will there be an Auschwitz Museum-like facility still standing 60 years from now (or at least something like the Koje-do POW camp historic park)? WSJ: Korea official has visited the headquarters of the European Union and expressed interest in dialogue, with discussions on human rights expected next year.... OK Lil' Kim is dead for sure. I hope his wife Soju is ok.

Best case: they want to be Myanmar and open up at least halfway, still whitewashing the worst of it so nobody gets human rights trialed but seriously trying to Westernize. Worst case: they want another round of free Volvos and KJI will reappear like nothing happened as soon as the free Volvos get delivered. Middle case: there's an actual civil war on and the diplos visiting people now have a 50/50 chance of disappearing as soon as they get home.

It could also be that Russia has accepted that China owns NK and is now backing them, and that NK now finally got that. NK can no longer use Moscow as a minifoil to Beijing, now got the Memo and is like "oh noesss, must find some other possible foil or Beijing owns everything, and if they do that they wont need our glorious Kim family anymore!" Kim the first actually played Moscow against Beijing against East Berlin (it isnt proper juggling if you are only playing 2 sides against each other), and succeeded, when Kim the second tried that he just successfully managed to simultaneously piss off everyone involved. Bonus Points for bloviating, to iirc Chruschev, that Stalin and Berija were totally cool guys who were never wrong and always had the right ideas.

E: tldr, Yong Il was really really horrible at anything resembling diplomacy

People spell the words in all kinds of crazy ways and I wouldn't fault them for it 'cause Romanization of Hangeul (or I guess Chosongul since we're talking about the north) has been schizophrenic as all gently caress, but the actual letter (ㅈ) is close to a j sound, not a y. Jong-il, Juche

A source in Beijing is reporting that Kim Jong Un injured his leg during a visit to a military base in which he, "ordered all the generals to take part in drills." Rumors about a coup have been called "rubbish." Given the Kim family's preference for secrecy, and Un's earlier disappearance in 2012, I cannot say I'm surprised. Still would be a good idea to seem if Un appears at Party Foundation Day tomorrow.
