My name is Oliver Queen...
Previously, on

Wait, what? Well, poo poo. Let's try this again. :siren:Season 2 spoilers ahead.:siren:

Last season's main story arc involved Slade Wilson's attempt to systematically destroy Oliver Queen. Driven insane by Dr. Anthony Ivo's superhuman "Mirakuru" serum, Slade erroneously blamed Shado's death on Oliver. Slade mostly stayed in the shadows during the first half of the season, but eventually made his presence known by posing as a new benefactor for Moira Queen's mayoral campaign.

Despite making his presence known, Slade continued his master plan successfully, appearing to be a step ahead of Team Arrow at every turn. Slade pierced into every aspect of Oliver's life, both figuratively and literally.

RIP, Moira :smith:

Eventually, with the help of his team, a Mirakuru cure, and an assist from Nyssa al Ghul and her minions, Oliver was able to take down Slade.

Man, that fight scene was great. More of this please, showrunners.

Oliver even did it without killing him. He later thanked an imprisoned Slade for allowing him reach his aspiration of being more than just a vigilante. But it came with a cost. His mother died, his sister abandoned him, his company was in shambles, and his family fortune was gone.

Also, a bunch of other stuff happened, because this show moves through plots about as quickly as anything on television. But I'm not going to dedicate a novella to all of that. And if you haven't watched the show and have read this far--way to spoil yourself, jerk--you should to go back and start from the beginning. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to do that. The first two seasons are available now on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Amazon Instant Video. Season 1 is also on Netflix Instant Watch in the US and possibly other countries, with Season 2 slated to go up on October 8th, the same day as the S3 premiere.

Anywho, let's catch up with the cast... (:siren:Minor Season 3 spoilers ahead, skip if you want to go in knowing nothing:siren:)

Team Arrow

Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen aka The Arrow

Strengths and Abillites: Outstanding archery and combat skills, vast financial fortune, abs, social media savvy.
Weaknesses: Every woman he's not related to.
After defeating his former friend turned nefarious foe, Oliver is left to forge his own path forward. While continuing his nightly heroics, Season 3 will have him joining with a new business partner (Laurel) and possibly even a new romantic partner (Felicity). With Slade locked up in prison, clearly nothing will go wrong.

David Ramsey as John Diggle

Strengths and Abillites: Highly trained military veteran, Black Driving, abs, ties to shady government spooks.
Weaknesses: Search Engine Preferences
Season 2 ended with Diggle learning that he had knocked up his ex-wife and fellow combat veteran, Lyla Michaels. An early S3 plot will involve Oliver's hesitation to allow the father-to-be into Team Arrow's frequent combat situations. Diggle's not on board with that.

Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak aka Not-Oracle

This isn't remotely the creepiest picture of her on the internet.

Strengths and Abillites: MIT Degree, Advanced Computer and Technical Skills, abs, nerdy wit.
Weaknesses: Tumblr.
Despite serving mainly as Team Arrow's tech specialist, Felicity still found herself in the line of fire on more than a few times in Season 2. Most notably, she was key in the ploy to give Slade the Mirakuru cure. In season 3, Oliver and Felicity will be going on a date, to the delight of some of the most unbearable people the internet has to offer.

Colton Haynes as Roy Harper aka Arsenal

Snazzy.

Strengths and Abillites: Moderate archery and combat abilities, Superhero Mentor, abs, kickin' new costume.
Weaknesses: No bionic weapon arm.
Single, unemployed, and de-Mirakuru'd, What's left for Roy to do but join Team Arrow full-time? But yeah, there's no way Oliver lets him have the team's coolest outfit for too long.

Allies and Acquaintances

Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance

Arrow's stunt team are the best in the business.

Strengths and Abillites: Law Degree, Took some self-defense classes, abs, good at blackmailing her employers.
Weaknesses: The Hooch
The Arrow thread's favorite punching bag returns, now with full knowledge of Team Arrow's identities and operations. She's also going into business with Oliver, as the two look to secure a bid for a Starling City revitalization project. Joining Team Arrow full time remains a possibility as well. No confirmation on whether Drunk Laurel will be making a Season 3 appearance.

Paul Blackthorne as Quentin Lance

...also pretty snazzy.

Strengths and Abillites: Excellent Policeman, abs, is basically Commissioner Gordon now.
Weaknesses: Health Problems, needs an Arrow Signal.
Detective Lance collapsed onto the pavement during his last scene in Season 2, his fate left unknown. SPOILER:He lives. It also looks like he's up for promotion from clips and pics we've seen this far. We'll see if his association with Team Arrow becomes more formal this year.

Willa Holland as Thea Queen

Some houseguest you are, Thea.

Strengths and Abillites: Nightclub Management experience, abs, regularly calls people on their bullshit.
Weaknesses: Went on vacation with a madman.
Tired of everyone in her life continually lying to her, Thea decided to skip town with her biological father, Malcolm Merlyn. As the lovely gif above (sorry) shows, Merlyn is wasting no time in giving her some training. It remains to be seen if she'll go full villain, though.

Caity Lotz as Sarah Lance aka The Canary

Strengths and Abillites: League of Assassins-trained fighter, fluent in multiple languages, Sonic noise device, abs, some sweet dance moves.
Weaknesses: Keeps making lifetime contracts with terrorists.
Sara agreed to return to the League in order to gain Nyssa's assistance against Slade Wilson. But she will be returning this season for an unconfirmed number of episodes.

Bex Taylor-Klaus as Sin

Strengths and Abillites: Street smarts, abs, knows superheroes who can come beat you up.
Weaknesses: Joined the cast of another TV show.
Sin served as a sidekick to The Canary and confidant of Roy and Thea over the course of Season 2. She's likely to return for Season 3, but whether her actress signing onto the Scream TV adaptation will affect her role remains unclear.

Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer aka The Atom

Strengths and Abillites: Superhuman Strength, Invulnerability, Flight, Heat Vision, Freezing Breath, abs, unconfirmed superheroic abilities.
Weaknesses Kryptonite, Magic, a rough career trajectory after 2006.
Ray Palmer is one of the new additions to the cast. This version of Palmer is a rival businessman looking into the same revitalization bid as Oliver and Laurel. The showrunners originally wanted Ted Kord for this role, but DC/Warner Bros have other plans for him. The Producers have confirmed that Palmer will suit up this season, but they claim it won't be with his powers from the comics.

Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn

Strengths and Abillites: Not many, because he's dead. Abs. He did show up on Person of Interest last season!
Weaknesses: Dead.
Tommy is dead and according to the producers will continue to be dead. But he will show up in the flashbacks of at least one episode. And who knows, maybe his dad will toss him in a Lazarus Pit at some point. Hard to say with this show. Oh, speaking of...

Rogue's Gallery

John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn aka Merlyn aka BARROWMAN! :argh:

Strengths and Abillites: Highly skilled archer and combatant, very good at faking his death, abs, a way with words.
Weaknesses: Hates poors. Torchwood sucked. That's about it.
Your God and mine His Holiness Barrowman joins the main cast for Season 3. With his disgruntled daughter in tow, Barrowman returns to Starling for as yet unexplained reasons. Ollie probably won't like them, though.

Matt Nable as Ras al Ghul aka The Demon's Head

Strengths and Abillites: ?????????, abs.
Weaknesses: ?????????
Namedropped a few times in Season 2, the famed Bat-Villain is appearing as one of Oliver's main foes this season, played by Riddick actor Matt Nable. Nothing yet on how much of the comics backstory is being kept for this version. All we know is that Oliver has heard some crazy stories about this guy.

Katrina Law as Nyssa al Ghul

Strengths and Abillites: Highly trained combatant, abs, ninja minions.
Weaknesses: Blondes.
Nyssa appeared as a foe and then an ally in Season 2. Gonna guess it'll be the former this season.

Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Amanda Waller

Strengths and Abillites: Skilled government operative, abs, pretty much does whatever she wants.
Weaknesses: Not played by CCH Pounder. :colbert:
Though ostensibly a good guy, Waller had to be convinced not to wipe Starling off the map so that Oliver and company could stop Slade with a more direct approach. From the look of it, she'll be a thorn in Ollie's side in both the present and the flashbacks this year.

The Suicide Squad

Strengths and Abillites: Diverse skillset, multiple sets of abs.
Weaknesses: Lack of loyalty, death implants in their necks.
Waller's team of prisoners turned conscripted mercenaries made their first appearance last year, and are likely to show up again. Shrapnel (Sean Maher) was killed while trying to bail on their first mission, so we could see new recruits alongside Deadshot (Michael Rowe) and Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White).

Manu Bennett as Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke

Strengths and Abillites: Combat training from elite Australian Special Ops Unit, handy with swords, abs, locked in a bunker that doesn't seem to have any guards.
Weaknesses Mirakuru No More
Slade is locked up on The Island and, for now, off the table. Odds he will break out at some point: 700%

Peter Stormare as the new Count Vertigo

Strengths and Abillites: A supply of Vertigo, You bet your rear end there's abs under that suit.
Weaknesses: Sequelitis.
Oliver was forced to kill the first Count Vertigo (Seth Gabel) last season in order to save Felicity. Oliver will run into this new one early on this season.

Nick Tarabay as Captain Boomerang

Strengths and Abillites: Throws Boomerangs, abs, Spartacus actors have a great track record on this show.
Weaknesses: Could go wrong in a hilarious fashion.
Captain Boomerang will show up as part of the Arrow/Flash crossover multi-parter towards midseason. Also a great candidate to join the Suicide Squad.

Finally, the powers that be have scaled back on the "no comics talk" rule. Per Deadpool's recommendation, I'm going to just steal the ground rules from jscolon2.0's Flash thread.

quote:

1.) The comics aren’t spoilers, but they’re also not on-topic. Use your discretion. “Holy poo poo, was that xxxxx character?” is probably okay, but a thousand words on how that’s not in canon, is not.

a. Seriously, no Speed Force poo poo. If you know what the Speed Force is, good for you. Don’t let this become a BSS in-joke thread. (This applies more to the Flash thread, but for consistency, it's a rule here too.)

b. The show probably won’t stick to the source material a 100% of the time, just like Arrow does. But just in case, don’t be a dick and ruin some cool surprise for someone.

2.) This show shares a universe with, and will crossover with, Arrow. But in general try to keep Arrow talk in the Arrow thread, and Flash talk in the Flash thread.

a. There’s even less of a reason to talk about Gotham, Constantine, DC movies, and Diniverse cartoons. They each have their own threads, and I trust you to find them.

b. No one knows if the new Titans or Supergirl series in production are related. Again, try to stay on topic.

3.) A lot of us know that the pilot leaked on the internet and have seen it already. General TVIV rules apply. It’s in spoilers until it’s actually aired on a network in a legal fashion.

4.) That’s all I have to say. Let’s let this be a fun thread full of and :flashfact: and :flashfap: (This, but pretend we have equivalent Arrow smilies. Somebody should get on that.)

Thanks, and if you hate my OP, too bad.

It's supposed to be canon to the show but I'm sure they ignore stuff from it at their discretion. For example in one of the comics between S1 and S2 Oliver says that he transferred a million bucks each into Felicity and Diggles' bank accounts before he took off for the island and yet in one of the S3 premiere previews Felicity is working at a Radioshack lookalike.

Yeah but neither is an MIT grad taking a low wage retail job unless they're really strapped for cash. I was just making the point that the tie-in comics are only canon until it's inconvenient for them to be.

Singer is one of those people with a massive Donner Superman fetish and that was the movie he was going to make one way or another. Plus 26 year old Routh and 23 year old Kate Bosworth playing characters who should be well into their 30s just looked off, even if Routh made the best of the material.

Routh's a great pickup for Arrow whether they have spinoff plans for him or not. I made the career trajectory joke in the OP but he really does deserve better.

IIRC both Oliver and Tommy were born in 1985. If Merlyn were to be about the same age as Barrowman (47), he'd have been pretty young when Tommy was born but it would be completely possible.
