Bullet Hell Abstraction I-IV
11/14/14 | WOMB
渋谷区円山町2-16, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0044

Oneohtrix Point Never will premiere Bullet Hell Abstraction I-IV; a suite of music composed using harmonic elements from the game soundtracks of Manabu Namiki, and re-oriented around sound design concepts from manic shooter games, made popular by companies such as Cave and NMK. The manic shooter style, often referred to as bullet hell or curtain hell, is unique in its maximal and chaotic presentation that tends to have a hypnotizing effect on the player. These hallucinatory shmups are often set Namiki’s scores, which idiosyncratically blend techno, prog metal and orchestral music. BHA I-IV will be presented as a sort of ritualistic homage to the formal and social components of bullet hell — utilizing WOMB’s strobe, lighting and mist effects to demarcate and symbolize the suite’s four passages. Additionally, an array of vertically-oriented flatscreens will accompany the performance, featuring active gameplay from Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou Ketsui, controlled wirelessly by members of the audience. Nearby to the monitor array is an arrangement of plinths, each featuring allegorically-charged objects as a plaintive shrine to bullet hell — one for each section of music performed.

Not really too sure that flys any more. Sure, they aren't coming out in the volume they did in, like, 1988, but between steam and iOS and doujin stuff, there are a pretty fair number of new ones coming out at a pretty regular pace and in an accessible way. It definitely seems less dead of a genre than it did 5, 10 or 15 years ago.

The son of Maryam is about to descend amongst you as a correct ruler, he will break the cross and kill the pig!

> 1) SLOWDOWN?- The game is SLOW, I KNOW IT'S NOT NATIVE...

Yes Vitamin is native. What you don't understand with your 100mhz
Mac is that games such as Vitamin work at a fixed frame rate. The
frame rate has been chosen for a target Mac which is *not*
a 100mhz Mac for obvious commercial reasons. If I change the frame
rate, the game would be too fast on your Mac.

Also If you play games to test the speed of you Mac,
that's a different problem...

> 2) WEAPONS- The weapons are a joke and a half... If you don't have AT
> LEAST a three shooter forget about getting anywhere. The enemies take
> five or so shots each, and when there on only on the screen for a few
> second you might as well kill yourself.

Many people already finished the game. All I can say, is that
the demo shows the second Vitamin level which is more difficult
than the first. But if it's too hard for you... I can slow down the
frame rate... oops I forgot that you want the game to be faster.

> 4) LOADING TIME- Everytime I want to play I get to wait as it loads...
> and I'm not talking when you open the game. I'm talking about when the
> game is open you click on the play button.... FORGET YOU!

Vitamin is not a 3D game with 90% of polygons and 10% of textures.
Vitamin is made of *megas* of cartoon animation (specially the CD
version which have a long introduction), they have to be loaded.

The second time you play you don't have to reload them.

> 5) NO MOUSE- What was the point of making the mouse if no one uses it!

The mouse is not appropriate for a game like Vitamin.
Do you really think that after four months of work we did not think at that...

> So unless a few things are worked out (okay I LOT OF THINGS) you might
> as well save your 35 dollars for descent (NOW AT $20 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Many people are tired of games like descent, doom, etc. Vitamin is something
different...

SNES shmups get a lot of hate from the hardcore shmup community, but I think they're alright. U.N. Squadron is good. Axelay, BioMetal, and Kidou Soukou Dion are all worth playing.
