Mercury_Storm posted:The sooner "car culture" dies a horrible death and we have public transportation worth a drat, the sooner we can talk about harsh DUI penalties that people might actually abide by. Got the cart before the horse there chief. Car culture isn't to blame, single-family homeownership is.

Charging thousands of dollars for DUIs works great. Keeps the drunks out of jail, on the road, and generating income for the state. It's the best system because they're going to do it anyway so you may as well tax them heavily for their lovely behavior.

Doctor Butts posted:Anyway, why do people choose to drive intoxicated? Do they do it because they think they can handle it or because they don't have another option? Alcohol intoxication leads directly to lowered inhibitions and risky behavior.

Feral packs of dogs roam many American downtowns, dodging tumbleweed and rusty muscle cars careening from bar to bar in futile search of cheap vodka to wash away daily sins.

Shbobdb posted:I've really liked MARTA from the handful of times I've visited Atlanta. Granted, I'm usually just going from ATL to the CDC or downtown/convention center but it worked great for me. Seemed a little empty/underutilized but it was very well maintained. MARTA is handy if you stay on the trains. Most Origin/Destination pairs are not along the train line, though. Once you get a bus involved it takes much longer to get where you're going. The best thing MARTA has going for it is that you can get off the train directly at the airport terminal, which is pretty rare for American cities.

Lots of folks ITT clearly afraid to have more than two drinks in one calendar day giving advice on how to be intoxicated in public.

Barlow posted:This thread really does drive home how many goons are city dwellers. The assumption that cabs are common or that public transit would ever be feasible is pretty laughable in a lot of the United States. It's more like goons are evenly represented among the 80% of responsible drinkers and the 20% of irresponsible drinkers, where the former simply don't understand why their proposals aren't going to change the behavior of the latter.
