Nothing really, he chats to Shinichi in the last episode and is the same as always.

Man that was not what I was expecting out of a final episode. I was expecting some easygoing probably introspective mellow epilogue stuff. Instead I spent half the episode grabbing my monitor yelling DON'T DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. This show was awesome.

If Satomi had bit the dust after she finally mellowed out and was acting like a person I would have been very upset.

Apparently the first blu-ray box for Parasyte is out, and sold a mere 631 copies, so I doubt we'll see a second season!

Light Gun Man posted:People have weird loving memory then. Eh. The music use was bad, the visuals rarely excelled, the great big monologues bogged down the pacing and rehashed previously-explained material far too often, and they didn't do much to tone down the seriously Eighties shonen stuff, making it seem rather dated. And that's before you get into how much of the manga's quirky humour they removed. It was an OK show, but it's hard to say it was a great adaptation.

Most of the directing was mediocre, but there were some really good action scenes. Like the dash to the seawall, or "Migi, you handle the defence".

ninjewtsu posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HUwGFVeN04 Hypnotik has a good opener (it's like something out of Dark Souls - and yeah, I realise I was criticising the soundtrack for being too video-gamey, but that series does great things with music to create mood and atmosphere) - but the main body is more like something out of Wipeout or Galaga, and it just doesn't convey the tension or gravitas of a life-or-death battle against alien monsters. Its one-size-fits-all usage regardless of the tone of the fight (tragic, tense, triumphant) exacerbated the problem. One of the key things about Parasyte is the paranoid horror - you are surrounded by powerful, flesh-hungry monsters wearing human faces, and one of the faces they wear could end up being terribly familiar. The Maxim did a bad job of maintaining that tone and atmosphere, and part of that was that it made every fight against one of those monsters sound like a clash with a bullet hell boss.

I never got the impression it was like something out of a video game. Reminded me way more of when the dubstep would kick in during JJBA Battle Tendency. I guess it wasn't a horror soundtrack, no

There are horror elements, but it really plays out more like a battle series for the most part. I think the fight music was fine and emphasized their super-fast movements well. My main issue with the soundtrack would be that godawful sad piano music that played like twice per episode. They could've done with more music in general.

The problems seemed to have more to do with lifeless, heavy-handed direction. I certainly think they could have trimmed down the monologues (especially that six-minute monster in the final episode) and inserted more of the manga's humour. I mean, we had the Gotou fight, did they really need to lecture us for a quarter of the episode on the messages it conveyed?

The direction otherwise was passable, good enough for the plot to shine through. Ultimately, the ploting and the fight animation were the stars of the show.

IShallRiseAgain posted:The original manga was incredibly hamfisted about delivering its messages too though. Yes, but that's the point of an adaptation. Take the good, strip out the bad. Bit more horror, bit more humour, bit less monologuing out already-addressed themes and a bit less weird Eighties stuff (awkwardly shoehorned-in shonen manga cliches, under characterised and strangely-used female characters). Mind you, given how parasites work, they could have just thrown in a line about Gotou learning about humanity from Dragonball Z and really wanting to LARP as Perfect Cell and he'd instantly be a way better character.

I thought the point of an adaptation is to take what's already there and stick it in a different medium I mean obviously a good adaption will accentuate the good and tone down the bad, but I wasn't aware that that's apparently part of the Mission Statement

Thing about a long monologue in text is that it's only as long as it takes you to read it, and most people read significantly faster than people speak. In an annie may you actually have to sit there and listen to the guy saying things (often with dramatic pauses for emphasis) .

It was too faithful an adaptation, to the point where I think they didn't even consider basic things like this. But at the same time they made smart but minor updates to give it a more modern setting and the pacing was pretty decent. I don't think they had a very coherent vision of what they wanted it to be.

I just finished this and Tokyo Ghoul and I enjoyed both of them. They had a lot in common but I think I liked Parasyte more. I'm not too sad to hear that there won't be a second season, I think it ended well. For music chat this is the best song from Parasyte, courtesy of Zedge: http://www.zedge.net/ringtone/1745097/ It is also my new ring tone, for when I have my phone on anything but vibrate which is never.
