I thought it was just him relying / trusting Migi that made him confident this episode - when Migi shows any sign of betraying or hurting him he just flips into the defensive.

I hate that I paid attention to the OP and saw his mum's face with the lines, it just made this episode really predictable. The ending was brutal though, I was expecting Migi to just straight up fight, not get blocked by Shinichi.
