A friend of mine makes CDs with Kaito and sells them in China. Apparently they've very popular over there.

This is Kaito:

I wonder what singers think about Vocaloids? The same as animators think of mo-cap?

This one is ok. Most of this stuff sounds so girly and meek though. In general I'm a rock, metal and vocal-less electronic kind of guy. If it doesn't have energy it needs to be special. The two videos I quoted before definitely fit that criteria.

I'd like to see a vocaloid version of this. It's one of the few things in this world that would be less shameful with the addition of anime girls.

Guys, find a woman who looks at you the way GhostStalker looks at every bald, obese, single 58 year old accountant from Tulsa who managed to win $4,000 by not wagering on a Final Jeopardy triple stumper.

So did anyone go to the Vocaloid concerts in LA and NY these past weekends? I went to the New York one at Hammerstein Ballroom yesterday. Didn't get there until a little under 30 minutes before the show was to start, so I didn't get a good spot on the floor to see the screen over people's heads. Doors were at 7, but concert didn't start until 8:30, so I figured I had time. Boy, was I wrong...

But after it started, I forgot all about that. Was able to climb on top of the thin rear end right side crowd barrier to grab a seat about an hour in, and was finally able to get a good look at the screen over the heads of everyone. The crowd was crazy, with synchronized glowstick choreography and all that. Helped that everyone in the crowd was given a free green glowstick in their swag bag at the door.

Such a big round of applause for the Vocaloid introductions, then Sharing the World got the crowd going a bit right before Senbonzakura got a huge hand. Len got a huge reaction for Butterfly on my Right Shoulder, as did the the first songs of Kaito and Meiko, and especially Luka when she did Just Be Friends.

Of course Miku got the largest response from the crowd, especially for Po Pi Po, and the three set of Secret Police, World is Mine, and Melt (complete with confetti cannons at the climax of the song), right after the band intros got people pumped up. As for the encore, Stargazer was a great song to end on, right after Tell Your World, which was great.

There was also a dubstep-y Miku song they played that I didn't recognize, bass was dropped a couple times there. None of my friends recognized it either. Can someone help me out?

Hiroyuki Ito, CEO of Crypton, also made a couple of unannounced appearances, filming the crowd from the side of the standing room only area, which was pretty cool. Didn't even notice him until I looked over at the sides of the room and saw someone that looked really familiar...

Afterwards, got a cheapo poster for $5 from a dude outside the venue, hawking them on the street. Probably a bad idea, but they were quickly selling out of merch at the official tables and I didn't have much money...

Yup, that's the one. Man, that song is great. The screen even had the CRT TV staticky scanning effect during this song too, and the bass was dropped even more, but it is the same song. Thanks.

A Vocaloid was in the PSP version of Peace Walker. You could program ZEKE up to say things when it took actions. A popular thing to do was to have it say "PEW PEW" when firing the railgun. You had to build the clips from the individual phonemes though - it wasn't always obvious what you needed to use to get the sounds you wanted.

Sadly I don't believe this made it into the PS3 version of PW.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, all four of the AI bosses had Vocaloid voices. There was some DLC to give them an angry female voice, and I remember it didn't sound terrible in English.

Stopped by Wallplay on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to check out the Miku Expo on the last day it was open right before it closed at 6. Hiroyuki Ito was there, taking and posing for pictures and stuff. I got him to sign some confetti I grabbed from the concert on Friday (which they launched during the climax of Melt).

He also had me take a couple of photos of him and the Miku Expo staff outside the building, with the giant Nomura rendering of Miku in the background, one of which was photobombed by a tourist at exactly the right moment.

An amazing time was had. Only wish I had more time to spend at the Expo.

Now this I really like. I don't know whether it's the Gumi voice or the style of the song or just me but I find this kind of thing waaaaaay easier to listen to than the much preppier, faster stuff Miku et al seems to be used in. It's probably just me because I generally can't stand most J-pop either. I just like my pop a less little frenetic than the general vocaloid style.

If a style of song exists, Miku has probably been used in it. Pop is the most common but there's plenty of slower stuff or weirder stuff too.

Sweet, a Vocaloid thread. I used to be really big into this back in the day. I remember hearing about it when it first came out and dismissing it as trash because all that existed back then were lovely anime covers, but then I came back after a year and got hooked due to all the songs coming out, as well as all the energy in the community back then. Never was a fan of Ryo's stuff, though...

Oh good it's like the nico thread take 2.

I kind of fell out of vocaloid stuff for the last couple years because a lot of the energy kind of went out of it (that graph is really true) but it's felt like the quality's improved drastically this year and I'm back to checking out the rankings each week.

Einander posted:

In my experience, the best way to actually follow new Vocaloid stuff is

I'd still say the daily ranking and then clicking people's mylists is the way to go, but that does kind of require you have a nico account and the site's speed has been pretty dogshit recently unless you have a premium account and/or watch wayyy off-peak. I'd definitely believe it if someone told me half the reason for the decline is because nico's size is kind of working against it. It also doesn't help that a couple of the biggest news blogs got shuttered and replaced with automated twitter captures.

If you search around the vocaloid tags on soundcloud you can usually find a ton of Indonesian tracks, I'll have to dig out some good ones.

Gumi should have an English voicebank. When I asked awhile back on what Vocaloids to use for English songs Gumi was recommended pretty strongly to me. Also, the two people who worked on that song are pretty legit at English Vocaloid stuff. Circus-P's Lie and I duology are really nice.
