Ugh.

I know I've mentioned this, but I worked at Whole Foods for several years. So many people came in asking about vegan diets for pets - for their cats in particular.

They actually sold raw cat food (frozen), but it was full of the stuff cats need. Like dead animals and protein.

I would love to go vegetarian myself (for both health and personal reasons, it's just hard to when you're surrounded by nothing but meat in this part of the US), but I would never force that on my pets - dogs and cats (especially cats) are meant to eat meat. Humans can get around it through :science:, tofu, beans, and other forms of protein, and I did go vegetarian for several months with no ill effects (plenty of positive effects though).

I still stay in touch with a few of my old regular customers. One of them was a mother and daughter who were both vegan, but fed their cat a raw diet, with a lot of meat. Cat lived a lot longer than most (I think he was 17 when he died). Daughter eventually went off of the vegan diet because of weight issues (there was a side of anorexia thrown in as well), but she's doing well.

I'm one of those evil monsters who feeds his pets dry food, but at least it's decent dry food (cat gets Wellness, dog gets something a bit cheaper, but still far better than grocery store pet food).

Took maybe 10 minutes, going very slowly.

The sticker they put on my car was a pretty crap quality vinyl cutout, but I think it's the same one they still use. They were supposed to remove it before I got the car but "forgot" so I peeled it off in their parking lot. Also ripped off their lovely license plate frame there. I don't advertise unless you pay me in rear end, grass, or money.

It probably helped that my car was only on their lot for a few weeks though. Traded in in late December, bought it in mid January. And yet, my 95 Civic jumped a tooth right at redline (I wanna say it was close to 7k?). It died in its tracks and wouldn't so much as backfire (sounded fine when cranking), but a tow to my mechanic and a few hours later, I got a phone call saying "whoever did the timing belt on this thing was a loving idiot, they didn't release the tensioner. It only jumped 1 tooth, compression is drat near perfect... bring $300 when you pick it up" (it was all labor, no parts - it'd had a new timing belt done by the PO/friend I bought it from a couple of months before I bought it)

He also worked his magic on my 88 Accord when the timing belt (which the seller swore was brand new) shredded. I was positive I was gonna need a top end rebuild. "I've seen a lot of these lose timing belts and survive so long as it happened at low RPMs, let me try slapping a new belt on and see what it does". 6 hours later... "come get your running car, no bent valves, has good compression.... bring $500 since we basically just did a full timing belt service" (this was in 1998 or so, Civic was around 2005).

Both interference motors. The 95 Civic I suspect wasn't on the VTEC cam lobes since it happened during a shift (foot not on gas, but the second I hit the clutch, the exhaust went quiet and it died).

Dealer chat unrelated to quoted stuff: my mom's side of the family has all spent some amount of time in the car business (at branded new car lots, branded used car lots, and BHPH lots affiliated with larger dealers).

It amazes me that my mother got taken for such a bad ride by Toyota, but she's also kept this car more than 5 times longer than any other car she's owned. She'd never owned a car more than 2-3 years before her Avalon - she's had it for close to 17 years. She'd also never owned a car much past 50k (usually they got traded in before 30k) - she has over 170k on the Avalon. It just keeps going, generally needing about $2k worth of work per year. She's finally talking about getting into something newer (more because she's nervous about the mileage on it). She knows the trade-in is barely into 4 digits on it, and private party is only about 2-3k on it, so I may wind up with it. It looks brand new inside and out, aside from the leather on the top of the back seats (dried out, but not cracked yet). Still, she did a $20k down payment, and still wound up with a 5 year loan @ >15%.

My grandfather owned multiple lots in my home town - Chevy/Geo, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Dodge, Nissan, Peugeot (when they were in the US), and i'm sure I'm forgetting other brands. My uncle took over a couple of those lots, then moved to AZ (then back to TX, to DFW), managing several GM lots over the years. Uncle also managed the BHPH arm of a major DFW dealer when he was semi-retired. Mom did accounting for grandad for years. My best friend's family was friends with my mom's side of the family too - so when he and I went to one of grandpa's lots to find him another car (he had $10k in cash in his pocket) and couldn't get a sales guy to even acknowledge us, he finally yelled out "who's dick do I need to suck to buy a car?". One sales guy that was outside flipped him off. Uh... that didn't go well for that sales guy (remember, our families were pretty well connected to each other). The customers that show up in t-shirts and shorts are often the ones with the money to buy a new car outright, or at least do a massive down payment.

Adiabatic posted:

I am pleasantly surprised with how much cool poo poo is in the stripped down base model Civic, to be honest. Really glad I didn't go with the Toyota.

You can only get the manual in the LX and the Si now, right? Not the EX?

Is the engine bay still nightmare-inducing? Or was that an 06-10 thing?

Adiabatic posted:

I first went to Toyota and they tried to gently caress me 8 different ways over the course of 2 hours until I finally got fed up and left.

I see Toyota dealers haven't changed much.

Mom went and bought her 03 Avalon XLS, loaded with every option, brand new from a Toyota dealer. They said they'd detail it and do the PPI, come back tomorrow.

She goes back the next day. The leather, navigation, memory seats, JBL stereo, and trip computer are gone. So are the spoiler and sunroof. Along with the white pearl paint (it's white, but not pearl). And the XLS badge is missing an S. They swore up and down it was the same car. It took her pulling her phone out and dialing Toyota of America in front of the dealer GM to get them to admit that not only did they sell it out from under her, but there's not another fully loaded XLS anywhere in Texas. They found a similar one in New Orleans, but missing the spoiler and navigation. They actually got someone to drive it from NoLA to Dallas (I'm assuming they did a dealer trade, so the driver probably stayed the night at the shittiest motel the dealer could find, then headed back in another car).

The loving continued when she'd get it serviced. Like when they talked her into a new timing belt and spark plugs at something like 60k or 70k. They're not recommended until either 105k or 110k. Then it pissed oil like a motherfucker, kept going back, and they kept telling her "they all do that when they get this old". When it popped a "small evap leak" code, they did a ~$3000 gut and replace of the entire evap system.

She took it to my old mechanic for another timing belt and set of spark plugs at ~170k. Not only did he find the original spark plugs in the rear bank, he found a socket (probably a 10mm :laffo:) sitting under the rear valve cover, and what he suspects was the original timing belt still on the engine. He got it to stop pissing oil too (loving rear valve cover gasket was pinched in several places), now it just burns oil. :v:

She went to another Toyota dealer when an exterior door handle broke. They wanted $800 to replace it - before labor, just parts and paint. I walked up to the parts counter at the same dealer, asked for a door handle, gave them the VIN, they ordered it. They gave me the wrong shade of white, but hey, "no returns on special orders" even though the part they handed me didn't match what I ordered. $120 for the pre-painted door handle vs the $800 "minimum" they'd quoted her, and took about 45 minutes to swap (and it was close enough that she just said gently caress it, nobody will notice unless they look closely).

tl;dr Toyota dealers can be shady AF. I'm sure this applies to all brands, but the amount of fuckery that two different dealers put her through.... also, when my old mechanic expanded beyond a 1 man shop, he hired a former Toyota dealer mechanic... and oh boy have I heard some stories from them about how the dealers liked to gently caress people over. :sigh:

Sounds a lot like mom's experience with Toyota, except her trade was an Oldsmobile Intrigue with 55k and literally falling apart aside from the 3800 (though it was on its 3rd water pump and just got the head gaskets done), so it wasn't worth poo poo to begin with. Complete with the ~16% APR, when she had an ~800 credit score at the time.

bolind posted:

I've never bought a car a) new, b) from a dealership or b) with anything but cash but holy gently caress these tales do not make me look forward to the day.

I've bought from 4 dealers.

2 of them hosed me hard, on cash deals. One was my Altima, which was a massive pile of poo poo, and they sent me home with the previous owner's license plates (then called me in a panic the next day about it, told me NOT TO DRIVE IT at all as the plates weren't valid, and find a ride to the dealer to get the right plates... I told them their fuckup, they get to fix it, why should I pay for a taxi... it took threats of siccing the state on them to get them to drive the correct plates to me, and thanks for making me miss work). The other is the Ion I currently have, which is not only a massive pile of poo poo, but it's possibly a flood car, and the motherfuckers put a lien on the title when we paid cash (they released it, but still, why the gently caress put the lien on it to begin with?)... and took 3 months to get us the title and plates. It took siccing the state on them to finally get the title.

1 of them was just a meh experience (Honda dealer, bought my last Accord from them for cash). It was a "firm, no haggle, internet-only price", but I called my uncle and well, turns out he was buddies with their used car manager (the dealer he was the GM of at the time was literally next door). Got $1k off, which annoyed the sales guy (and he made it obvious). 1 was actually downright pleasant (Carmax, with in-house financing). That one, I had my trade listed on Craigslist for $1500, willing to go down to $1200 - they offered me $1200 for it (the above-mentioned pile of poo poo Altima) right off the bat, and handed me a check on the spot - separate from the purchase transaction. I handed the check back over and threw some cash in for the down payment on my old Ion. The financing sucked (13.5% @ 72 months), but I had a credit score in the mid 500s and a relatively low down payment, I was loving thrilled they were willing to finance me at all.

They honored the Carmax warranty on the Ion when I needed it, gave me a loaner when it was in the shop, and really it was just an easy, no pressure experience. The sales person and I were BSing a bit, and he told me they just get a flat commission on every sale - it's not percentage, just a flat number, no matter how much the car is, so they're under no pressure to talk you up to a Corvette from a Kia Rio.

When it comes to GM dealers, I dealt with 2 different ones for recalls on my old Ion. One of them claimed 45 minutes, if it was over an hour they'd give me a loaner. 4 hours (and a severe rear end chewing from my boss) later, I had my car back, and one of the salesmen had the balls to hand me a job application for a lot porter for $9/hr when I told him "no, I'm just drooling while my car is getting recall work done, there's no way I could ever afford this ZL1". And wouldn't. Stop. Following. Me. You know the manager from Office Space? Dead ringer, except really pushy. The other dealer? I handed over the keys, they asked if I wanted a ride anywhere, said it'd be an hour or so. I just asked where a good burger place was and refused the ride, said I needed the exercise (truth). Walked the ~1/2 mile to the burger place they suggested after browsing their used lot briefly (one salesguy approached, I told him I was having recall work done and just browsing, hehanded me his card and said to let him know if I wanted to look at anything). They called while I was eating and said "car's ready, did you go to Olive Burger like <x> suggested? Okay, we're sending someone to pick you up so you don't have to walk back." If I buy a new Chevy, it WILL be from that dealer, even though they're 3 1/2 hours away now.

That's horrible. And how people get food poisoning.

Oh gently caress no, we trash anything that we find that's supposed to be refrigerated or frozen if there's the slightest chance it's been left out.

If we find something like, say, one brand of yogurt that's been dumped next to another brand of yogurt, the chances of it getting warm are minimal to none - someone probably saw another brand they liked, and dumped their original yogurt a minute or two after picking it up. But anything in butcher paper (like those crab legs), unless handed directly back to an employee of meat or seafood moments after leaving the counter, is trashed. It gets tossed into a back room freezer until we're done with whatever we're doing for the day, at which point we scan it to damage it out. Then it gets chucked in the dumpster while a manager watches (and we have to get the dumpster key from a manager anyway). Same if we, say, find another department's product in a cooler not belonging to that cooler's department. We have no idea how long it was out of refrigeration (so if I find a steak in a freezer, it gets damaged out).

There's some stuff that's similar between different departments, but it'll be refrigerated in one, frozen in another. For example, the meat department has refrigerated store-brand kolaches. Frozen has frozen store-brand kolaches (and the packaging is even pretty similar between them). I often find the meat dept's kolaches in the freezer right next to the frozen ones. The refrigerated ones come in frozen, and thaw in the meat coolers when stocked - those get handed back to meat if there's no visible frost on the packaging (frost means it was damp when it went into the freezer, which means it sat out a bit).

We're super paranoid about the "cold chain".
