Sure, whatever, maybe flipping burgers as your first job really does teach you something useful, but beyond that it reeks of just world nonsense that we tell ourselves to feel better about the fact that some people will spend their whole lives doing menial work for very little pay. Really now, learning to be willing to work for what you want is in no way comparable to being treated like an expendable resource in return for the opportunity to barely get by. Everything I've seen suggests that the latter doesn't build character - it destroys character.
