If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's also the one I never played past, because it's when the enemies start becoming a pack of bullshit and I could never figure out how to single them out, no matter what I did I kept getting seen by two or three dudes at the same time and that's a death sentence () in this game. Yeah, the game definitely moves into the "completely unforgiving" territory about halfway through. The kid gloves come off fairly early and without much warning. Kaboom Dragoon posted:Manhunt takes heavy inspiration from movies like Driller Killer, Maniac (the original) and so on. The whole thing's basically a sick love letter to the Video Nasty panic that swept the UK (Manhunt was developed by Rockstar North, based in Scotland) in the early to mid-80s. That Wiki page is well worth a read if you want an understanding of the inspirations for the game and the direction the developers went, by the way. The Video Nasty moral panic basically dictated the direction of movie releases in Britain for close on two decades, thanks to the introduction of the Video Recordings Act 1984. As a result, the only way to see any of these movies was on Nth generation VHS copies, usually heavily degraded (which led to the kind of visual corruption you see in the executions). It wasn't until 1999-2000 that films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Exorcist were allowed to be released over here, even in a cut form. That the game itself eventually fell pray to several bursts of outrage (including one where it was allegedly implicated in a murder, an implication eventually proven to be false) probably gave the developers a small sense of satisfaction. Huh. You know, I was familiar with the Video Nasty panic, but never really made the connection that Manhunt was a pseudo-homage to it. But you're absolutely right; it totally fits into that framework. Especially considering the score, which is extremely synth-heavy and evocative of the late 70's/early 80's horror films that would have been banned under the act.

Manhunt was my introduction to stealth games and I still regard its particular approach fondly. Up until I played it I'd been under the impression that stealth games were about memorizing patrol patterns and ghosting through levels without ever getting seen, and the idea of instead being able to (in fact, being expected to) eliminate the enemies one by one was much, -much- more appealing. Of course, it turns out that plenty of seminal stealth games (Thief not least among them) actually fully support you taking out foes along the way in a permanent fashion, and I've enjoyed the (sub)genre ever since, as long as I had that option available to me. And yeah, it's really frigging tense.

Ho Boy, Man hunt! A long time ago, when I was still drawing Natch Evil, I relied on Manhunt heavily for inspiration. I would play the hell out of the first half of the game and just feel the black ink drip off the tips of my fingers, like feeling gore-lust sweat from the pores of my hand. The game made me lick my lips. Still does. I'm super hyped. Hope to see a good Let's Play of this baby. Hmmm...

I played the poo poo out of this game for a while when it came out. I was super excited about it and everything. Got to the level with the Nail gun and the difficulty of stealth just got super frustrating and the amount of gore actually got to me. Especially the bat kills and poo poo like that, so I gave up. Seeing everything 10 years later again brings back some memories, and I'm curious how far I was, and how the story ends now.

Somehow I was recently thinking both "I wonder if Manhunt is still around" and "Gee, I wonder what Fiendly is doing for his next LP". What a pleasant coincidence. Never played this, but I worked for Blockbuster when this came out and had to explain to a lot of people that this might not be the game that you want to rent for little Timmy. Really, I heard a lot about this, and was interested, but never even got to watch it. The first few executions were kind of "Really? This is what people got up in arms over? This is almost silly.". And then you set up the tee ball. Also, for all the times I looked it the cover/title, it's taken me until just now to realize that the logo is a machete.

Regarding snuff, I'd say that Charlie Sheen is an idiot. I've seen A Flower of Flesh and Blood, and it's practically a cartoon it's so ridiculous. The plot (what little there is) has a woman get abducted off the street, then a dude in a samurai get up cuts her to pieces, then the camera pans around a room filled with jars of body parts. That's the whole thing. What's weird is how adamant some people are in trying to disprove snuff's existence. Everytime the possibility of it being real comes up, someone has to get pedantic and start siting draconian definitions for why something doesn't count. Like after the videos of executions of military prisoners in (IIRC) the Czech Republic become hot black market commodities to the point where the executions were taking place with the primary intent being to sell the videos, but people say that doesn't count because it's not some sexy porn business. Unrelated observations behind the spoiler tag for a movie recently seen: Yesterday I watched The Den, about a woman who makes the wrong friends on a chatroulette clone. During the climax, she's abducted and finds herself in a compound under heavy camera surveilence, fighting a gang that are EXTREMELY similar to The Hoods. I wonder if the game had an influence on the film?

I wonder why more Hoods didn't think of the idea of actually hiding and ambushing Cash instead of just standing there or patrolling around waiting for Cash to ambush them. I mean I assume they're none too bright but they have to be aware of the situation, and you'd think they'd come up with a better way to kill a guy than sticking their necks out and letting the guy cut them.

My assumption is that the Hoods were given basically no info beyond "if you manage to kill this guy I'm gonna give you some cash". I think the director basically expects Cash to survive an arbitrary number of shoots, and set up the scene with a bunch of chumps as warmup.

That's the whole thing. Charlie Sheen is definitely an idiot, but in his defense, he apparently only watched part of the movie before deciding it was possibly a real snuff film and reporting it. Since it was intentionally made to appear as much like a snuff film as possible, there's probably at least a chunk of it that could convincingly pass as one if the viewer immediately turned it off in disgust upon seeing it. The dumber part is that the FBI was already investigating it as a possible snuff film and had presumably at least watched it in its entirety, and if I recall correctly, there's a part where a severed hand continues to flex its fingers, just like in the lovely and obviously fake exploitation film called Snuff. That alone shoulda been indicative of its authenticity... Choco1980 posted:What's weird is how adamant some people are in trying to disprove snuff's existence. There's also the Dnepropetrovsk maniacs from the Ukraine who filmed all their murders, reportedly for the purpose of selling them as snuff. If that part is true, it's only their failure to actually do so that makes the recordings technically not snuff films. I'd say that any of these examples count as snuff films, but it's an entirely semantic argument and therefore pointless, so I'm fine with letting them stay the stuff of legends. Makes for a better story anyway. Seyser Koze posted:Though you do have to wonder how Starkweather persuaded the first ("KILL THIS SICK gently caress") guy to stand still facing in one direction. I guess to be fair-ish, we could point out that it was probably less easy to detect the special effects in an nth-generation VHS dub than a glorious remastered Unearthed Films DVD version. Meh. He Never Dies was the only one from the series that I liked anyway.

The manual that came with the game has some more detail on things including the gangs and the Hoods were described as basically being a loose collection of lowlifes in it solely for the money. They aren't really organized, they don't really care about teamwork, and they don't really get a thrill out of it like some of the later hunters do...their idle chatter is largely them bitching about waiting around to kill Cash when they could be doing something else. So yeah, they're chumps.

I think it's fair to say that if the idea exists, someone at some point has tried it. So the odds of someone having more money than scruples arranging to have a movie filmed going by the very textbook definition of a snuff movie just so they can say they have one? Vegas wouldn't give you a bet on those odds.Fiendly posted:Charlie Sheen is definitely an idiot, but in his defense, he apparently only watched part of the movie before deciding it was possibly a real snuff film and reporting it. That alone shoulda been indicative of its authenticity... They look silly now, but the effects were surprisingly convincing for their day and watching it on a poorly-copied VHS tape would only sell the authenticity. The directors of the Guinea Pig movies (the larger series to which FoFaB is a part of) were investigated by the police numerous times, mostly to prove that, no, they hadn't actually murdered anyone. There was one occasion, however where one of them dumped a load of furniture drenched in fake blood by the side of a river after a shoot (I want to say it was for Mermaid in a Manhole, but I may be wrong). The blood eventually washed into the river, turning it red downstream, which, after it was discovered, naturally caused a commotion. He ended up getting hit with a fine for illegal dumping and was told if he ever offended public decency like that again, he'd go straight to jail.

Looking at the plot synposes of the Guinea Pig films, I have to wonder how these concepts are able to be fleshed out into full films. They seem short stories at best. Unless the films themselves are short. I dunno, I'm never gonna watch 'em, they sound hosed up.

Yeah, so far I've only gotten around to seeing Flower, but it's only something like a half hour long. Also, I guess to be fair to Sheen, I'll grant him some more credit if he didn't watch the whole thing. It does begin with what appears to be taping over a tv program to give the illusion of an Nth generation taping. Also, the really ridiculous stuff (the aforementioned twitching limbs, background music, etc) don't kick in until the end. Snuff meanwhile, I can't see how anyone could mistake for real. I mean, Hardcore had more realistic snuff scenes, and that never even pretended to be real...
