I love this game. It really seems like a precursor to Arkham Asylum where the enemies start out organized and all big and bad, then just start falling to pieces (har har) as you pick them off.

Yeah you really almost feel bad for killing the final guy before the next checkpoint, because there's really no need to at that point.

The Skins are definitely one of the most boring gangs in this game. While I feel that the idea of a white supremacist gang has potential to make an interesting antagonist, the Skins stages happen to go on way too long, and are generally some of the most annoying in the game. I really do consider this to be the low point.

On another note, I've never heard the director's "tolerant society" line before in all the many times I've played this game. Brian Cox has an absurd amount of dialog.

I love that one of the guys has a shirt that says "First to go". Shame he wasn't the first one you encounter in the level.

This might sound crazy, but I swear the most brutal kill you've had so far has been when you beat to death the dude with the knife and splattered his brains across the ground. I was actually surprised to realize you apparently have an inventory limit.

You get one of each weapon type.

Yellow (junk, used to make noise)
Green (single-use, e.g. plastic bags, bits of wire)
Blue (small reusable, e.g. knives and blackjacks)
Red (large reusable, e.g. the baseball bat)

The irony and idiocy the Skinz all demonstrate gives a subtle hilarity to almost every kill, and it's also a fulfilling challenge to single them out and kill them one at a time like you're supposed to, but when you get two or three of them on your case, which happens every loving time you make a noise or change positions the first time you play this scene, it can take a full minute or more to disperse all of them, which is frustrating to say the least.

I'd never heard it before this recording myself, so I made sure to crank the audio on it a little so no one missed it.

Fun Shoe
Now that they've been introduced, the gun mechanics are the worst. This game is really not friendly to you when more than one gunuser piles up, and it just becomes a loving mess. I much prefer when the game is melee only.

I get all sorts of warm fuzzies from the graphics, though. The GTA3/Vice City/Manhunt/San Andreas time period is definitely my favorite Rockstar development period. Chunky graphics, vulgar but clever writing, fun gameplay(Mostly...)... They've definitely lost something since GTA4.

Edit: And how could I forget Bully? Bully was, in my opinion, one of the best games Rockstar ever made.

What I like is that each type of item is kept on a different part of Cash's body, so you can see his entire inventory just by looking at him.

They also assume that he's gay. I have to guess this is just how they react to any unexplained noises, people ringing the doorbell, TV going on the fritz, etc.

I think this is actually one of the earlier games to have cover-shooting mechanics, although the levels aren't really set up to make use of them until later.

Probably the thing I like the most about Manhunt's storytelling is that it introduces a lot of vague and unexplained yet highly evocative ideas and imagery and you can't help but try and figure out what it means. Sometimes the best story is the one you tell yourself.

UPDATE

Fuelled By Hate

A rapid-fire update with hopefully enough meat on it to tide the thread over because, due to starting a second job, preparing for a move, and let's be honest, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, my free time is going to be severely limited for the rest of the year and updates will be pretty scarce. Hopefully it won't be nearly as bad as Splatterhouse was this time last year, but I can make no promises right now. I'll just be working on the LP when I can and we'll see how that goes.

If you haven't already, this is the perfect time to check out Let's Play Manhunt 2 by Nickmeister, which I remind you hasn't even the faintest hint of a reference to the original Manhunt's story and is only called a sequel because it utilizes (and somehow fucks up) the execution system. Also, Scruffy's LP of The Warriors is excellent (one of my favorite LPs ever) and the game has way more stuff in common with Manhunt than Manhunt 2 does, not the least of which being that it's actually good. Both of these guys have lots of other stealthy goodness on their channels as well, so you should not go wanting while waiting for more updates from me.

I always had so much trouble trying to 5 star this scene, the incredibly long level mixed with a comparatively tight time limit really tried my patience, so it was nice to see you do a proper 5 star on this scene.

I'm sure you are eventually going to go over the bonus material in the game so I won't spoil too much, but I will say the gang that was originally supposed to inhabit the junkyard would have been so much better than the Skins. At least the next gang is a good deal more interesting and includes probably my favorite scene in the whole game. Really looking forward to seeing you tackle that stuff but take your time, real life comes first.

The voice acting and writing for the gangs is actually pretty good. The later gangs are actually really creepy, and a big part of this is the things they say when they're chasing you.

Glad to see the LP's back, and yeah the zoo map is generally the most bullshit of the entire game. You have a ton of loud ground spots that can give you away (unless you absolutely crawl across them at a snail's pace), and wide open spaces where guys tend to wander by to see you doing executions. It's also harder to run away since the rule is that if they see you go into a shadow they'll not be fooled, and with the big open areas there are times when you literally have to run almost back to the beginning of the map if you get spotted.

The rest of the zoo after this level offers a little more cover at least, but it's still bullshit.

I always really liked this scene due to just how forgiving the "save the family" objective was. Not only is getting everyone out alive pretty easy considering you just have to not alert the gun guys, but you can get three out of four killed with no penalty. I always wondered why the director would care if Cash saved anyone, surely more bodies on the ground would make for a better scene, also Cash himself never really felt like the right kind of character to suddenly try to save others, even if they were family.

Either way I always liked this scene.

Not so much an escort level, this time. Rather a 'make sure you leave them all dead and don't let the gunners spot you too long' level.

How forgiving is the timing on that spotting and them running back to execute Cash' family, anyway?

It varies wildly, but most of the time they'll see Cash, shoot at him once or twice, then run away to kill a hostage. Unless you've lured them a good distance from their target, you're probably too late once they turn their attention away from you.

Last time I played this, the gunmen would see me, take a potshot, bolt back to the family member, then get stuck on the geometry and spaz out, giving me an easy kill. That may vary for other players, however.
