a lot of these would look better with some very slight motion blur, because gif cant do blinky transparency

It'd be much easier if I could get Stephen's sprite there.

Great Joe

Yeah, if I had the sprite I could do it manually and it'd look real nice.

Anyone know if it's easy to cheat to that scene in an emulator somehow?

Can't you get to that scene in the first ten minutes of the game?
You free him from a prison cell in about the first 10-20 minutes of the game, but I'm pretty sure that's a different sprite.

maybe its the same problem the sonic games had, you move fast in a car game so to have good looking graphics you need to make a ton of art, and thats expensive, so they make safe boring poo poo
Yes and no. Burnout 3 has a lot of circuit tracks which is a good way to save assets, a lot of the sprint tracks also share sections between each other, which saves further on assets. Finally, more than half of the cars are just the same mesh as some other car with a different texture. There's a lot of ways to save money on making car games. What's really bringing car games down is real-world licensing. Every manufacturer has their own demands and limitations, whether it be how legal the driver's actions are, the existence of shortcuts, how fast a car is in relation to other cars, whether a given car can roll or spin in the air, exclusivity agreements like Ferrari had with Microsoft and Porsche has with EA (although in a pinch, RUF is a nice substitute for them). Of course, every license costs money that could go into paying developers to make the actual game. At the end you can either make a really lovely "arcadey" simulator that doesn't satisfy people who like arcade games or simulators, or you can make an actual simulator that nobody buys except the people who would buy the decade old simulator sitting in your portfolio anyway.

Other factors include the rise of cinema realism since Western publishers gained traction from 2005 onwards, Japanese publishers' increasing focus on small guaranteed domestic markets and most of Britain's racing talent going indie (whether it's by choice or not).

On the bright side, there are racing games coming out that while not exactly like Burnout 3, have a lot of its "gently caress real physics, this is how cars SHOULD be" attitude in terms of how they play. Distance, Gas Guzzlers Extreme and Toybox Turbos are fun; Drift Stage and 90s Arcade Racer might come out next year and there's a new Trackmania coming out this November.

It's not all doom and gloom, y'know. :unsmith:
