This is what I have been fingers-crossed hoping for in the back of my mind. The way they've been dallying with the AD search and the general lack of concern about everything else means that either things are seriously hosed up in the administration or they already have a commitment from a top-notch coach and even Hackett couldn't screw it up.

Either case would be believable, unfortunately. I don't care if it's Harbaugh specifically as long as we get a known quantity. We've got to get a quality coach this time around.

I'm pretty ignorant of how NFL contracts are structured. Could SF prevent Harbaugh from leaving for a college job, considering he still has a year on his contract? With all the rumors of them potentially trading him for picks, it would seem like they would block him leaving for UM if they had the ability, considering they would get nothing from such a move.

Here's part of the reason why it's better in the long run for Harbaugh to go to Michigan - the 49ers can't do anything about Harbaugh going to college. Furthermore, if Harbaugh gets fired, San Francisco still owes him the balance of his contract as long as he doesn't go to another team.

San Francisco's best scenario is trading Harbaugh to another team for draft picks, which would get them some practical value (picks) and keep them from paying Harbaugh next season. Also, by trading Harbaugh, the 49ers have all the control and leverage in the situation, and they come out somewhat ahead.

Harbaugh's ideal scenario is going to Michigan after getting fired in San Francisco. Under that, Harbaugh would be getting paid by the 49ers and Michigan, would be able to choose where he coaches, would be able to hurt the 49ers, and could ultimately pick a better NFL job 4-5 years down the line.

Ultimately, I think Harbaugh's coming to Michigan after San Francisco's season ends.

He's not the only one. It's reasonable to assume Harbaugh knows he's toast at the 49ers. It's also reasonable to assume that the Michigan athletic department has contacted him with regards to his interest in the job. The fact that they are waiting on him and not actively pursuing alternatives suggests he did not say no.

There is not as yet any definitive evidence that he is taking the job. It is telling, however, that there have been numerous opportunities for evidence to appear that he is not taking the job, and such evidence has not surfaced.

If the Niners are eliminated from the playoffs this weekend as seems likely, things could become definitive next week. All I really care about is getting a decent coach and whether or not it's Harbaugh is secondary.

All there is to do now is wait.

Right, I understand why it happened. Just saying that, to me, is enough not to downgrade Harbaugh from an "unlikely candidate" to "absolutely, 100% not happening".

At the end of the day, the narrative pushed by NFL beat writers is just to get pageviews and doesn't reflect what's actually going on. Things take time, and in this case, Michigan has to wait for everything to open up with Harbaugh before anything else.

Oh yeah, twitter is already lighting into that guy.

Hutchinson commented about 'this is how Michigan views their alumni'. This will get interesting.

For the past couple years, but especially 2014, Michigan had a lot of 'team reunions' at football games. Various years of Michigan football teams would be gathered and honored on the field during commercial breaks, with what seemed like 3-4 different teams per game.

Turns out that Dave Brandon forced all those guys to pay $75 per ticket to go, and could only attend if they bought full-price tickets for themselves and anyone they wanted to bring. The whole 'honoring teams' was a scam to sell unwanted tickets at full price. Some of the old players got into it with Brandon, and that was a major cause of concern for the alums.
