Thread title should read: [ASK] us about Something Sensitive What I expect to happen: account banned, thread gassed. What I hope will happen: people will enjoy asking questions, reading the answers, and making funny posts, whether they are for or against SoSe. Hello, goons. I am GAPO. I am a Something Awful forums poster, and also the founder and webmaster of Something Sensitive. You may know SoSe as the "permabanned pantsshitting republican racist forum". Or, "that forum full of obsessed doxxers". If that is the case, you probably don't know us at all. Okay, well, maybe a little. We will be happy to answer questions about SoSe. Seriously. We will answer all serious questions as time permits. We may not respond to "gently caress you bigot" posts unless they are drat funny. This thread is not intended as a provocation, SA bitch fest, or slap in the face. We just thought that since our two sites are, for better or for worse, inextricably linked, perhaps some of you might like to ask us about.....stuff. This is not a recruitment drive. We're not gonna link the site, and We hope no one else does. To be frank, the average goon just isn't a good fit for SoSe, and probably shouldn't post there. If we think you're a good fit, we've probably already sent you a PM asking you to come on by. We don't know if there is any legitimate interest in this subject, and even if there is, it may still be gassed just because of the subject matter. That having been said, do any of you have any questions, comments or insults? GAPO fucked around with this message at 19:13 on Nov 3, 2014 |

What are the rules of SASS? How is the site moderated? What keeps the swaths of vengeful goons from creating accounts, starting slapfights and mocking SASS members, constantly? I'd imagine since there's no paywall, you'd probably get a lot of angry goons looking to piss people off and rightfully so. Basically, how do you keep it from dissolving into troll post after troll post? I can only imagine how many threads/posts are there simply to piss off the actual members. liquorlanche fucked around with this message at 19:20 on Nov 3, 2014 |

liquorlanche posted:What are the rules of SASS? How is the site moderated? What keeps the swaths of vengeful goons from creating accounts, starting slapfights and mocking SASS members, constantly? We have 4 rules: No IRL contact (this mainly applies to "doxxings"), No hard core porn or gore ( linking it is OK, don't post it), no making GBS threads up chat or threads with unrelated drama (we have a subforum just for that), and no outing someone's SA account. The site is moderated by a loose group of admins (we call them "fagmins") who basically just enforce the four rules and act like internet janitors most of the time. Nothing stops goons or anyone else from popping in to vent their spleen. I don't know why it's not more of a problem, actually. It does happen once in a while, but it's pretty rare. liquorlanche posted:So what constitutes a probation or ban? Good question. So far, purposefully and repeatedly violating the rules against disruption. We banned Vilepilot because the sheer volume of his posting was making it impossible to use the "read new posts" feature. We banned Stiles/Spoonful of Bromide (still not sure which, or if it was both) for being crazy in an unfunny way. I banned someone for threatening to send weirdos to my house using craigslist. It doesn't come up a lot. We don't ban people very often. There isn't any probation per se, but you can be plexxed, which is when you can only post in one crappy subforum and you can't use chat. That usually doesn't last long and is a corrective measure. Our user base is wary of heavy handed moderation so we have to tread lightly. I had a poll on banning Stiles, but asked people to post thumbs up/thumbs down gifs. Another fagmin and I thought it would be funny. But immediately there were cries of "NICE WACKY ZANY ABE STYLE THREAD, human being". GAPO fucked around with this message at 19:50 on Nov 3, 2014 |

I started SoSe after Hangly Man melted down and deleted The New Effort. I only did it because I wanted to continue to read the type of humor I read on the original SASS, and to a lesser extent, TNE. The primary motivation, at least for me, is and always has been laughs. I am distressingly normal, IRL with a job, wife etc. I spend a fair amount of time online, but only some is related to SoSe. I'm pretty active, spend a lot of time outdoors. I guess that's normal? I don't talk about the internet in my everyday life. GAPO fucked around with this message at 19:48 on Nov 3, 2014 |

how would you rank SoSe among all of the other offsite SomethingAwful related sites that have existed over the years? what is its special quality and competitive advantage over these others? do you pay tribute to those pioneers who came before?

Earwicker posted:how would you rank SoSe among all of the other offsite SomethingAwful related sites that have existed over the years? what is its special quality and competitive advantage over these others? do you pay tribute to those pioneers who came before? Hmmm, hard to answer really. Which is/was the best? Well, my personal favorite was OG SASS. But many of our members say this is the best incarnation of SASS so far. In terms of impact, SoSe is the clear winner. Depends on who you ask I guess. I had a deep fondness for SASS and really enjoyed reading it. SoSe was my way of paying tribute I guess, since my vision for the site was that it would be as faithful a recreation of it as possible. I will always use SASS as a reference point for what I want SoSe to be like. Edit: we also have several OG SASSers among us. As far as what special advantage do we have, I dunno. A bunch of people who have been SASS regulars forever? Right place at the right time, at least in part? Edit: one advantage of SoSe, is, in my opinion, a clear vision of what the site is and isn't. It is, first and foremost a site for discussing, even mocking SA and goons. I look at it like AYB. It is not a serious discussion forum. SoSe regulars have heard me go on about MY VISION, but I think it helps to keep the site focused. And it helps to have a niche. In my opinion, anyway. TNE and MPC both tried to turn the SASS concept into a serious, intellectual forum. Not my cup of tea, but to each his own. I see us as remora to the shark of SA. Sure, we depend upon SA for our existence, and in that way we are a bit of a parasite. But we perform the valuable service of removing detritus. GAPO posted:we perform the valuable service of removing detritus. Yea, the mods here say the same thing and look we turned out. What I'm trying to get at with all my questions regarding rules, bans and moderation in general is what makes your funny police any different from ours? I consider my political views to be very leftist and used to take great joy in the good ol' days of dogpiling on republicans who dared to post. My main issue with SA is how all the fun is gone because any/all posts that assume a "right wing" political stance get gassed/probated/banned. It's like any time a right-wing opinion gets posted here, we all gear up for fun and just when we're about to come out firing, the poster gets probated, a bunch of goons unload their ammo into an empty field and that's the end of that. I just don't see how the two forums are different. A left-winger tries to argue with the majority right (on SS) and the thread immediately gets sent to whatever is the equivalent of the gas chamber? Or do you guys just let the fights get carried out? It all sounds relatively hypocritical. "We're here to clean up the filth" when one man's trash is another man's treasure. Edit: Not talking about your rules regarding spam and complete garbage posts. More like making GBS threads up threads with opinions which go against the general (right wing) consensus. liquorlanche fucked around with this message at 21:37 on Nov 3, 2014 |

liquorlanche posted:Yea, the mods here say the same thing and look we turned out. What I'm trying to get at with all my questions regarding rules, bans and moderation in general is what makes your funny police any different from ours? The "detritus" comment was a joke for the most part. Really, we're here for laughs. That's it. Now, if we can get those laughs while uncovering hypocrisy or worse, all the better. While many of us have posted on SA for years(and still do), most of us don't have any illusions that we are "saving" SA, though some would like to. There is also a contingent who just want SA to burn so that they can toast marshmallows. The vision may be clear, but the end, not so much. As to your question, the only answer I can give is that our "funny police" aren't "funny police", they're internet janitors. Usually, if something doesn't violate one of our few rules, you won't get plexxed or banned for it. We do have a conservative majority on our site, but the moderates and liberals who make up roughly a third of our userbase do not fear being plexxed or banned for having a dissenting opinion. Even though SASSers might(and often do) disagree with bannings or plexxings, I don't think you could find anyone who was punished just for having the wrong opinion, or for not being "funny". Being persisitently and disruptively not "funny", maybe. But there's a different mindset when it comes to moderation on SoSe. I hope. But, even on our site, you will find those who think moderators in general, and me in particular, are wanna-be tyrants. Certainly I have made mistakes(hindsight being 20/20), but this is my first stab at running a forum, so..... Oh, and maybe one of our fagmins has plexxed people on flimsy pretenses while drunk a time or two. Maybe. And we don't plex or ban for disagreement, even under guise of disruption, if that's what you're getting at. If it's not a massive derail(and entertaining derails will be allowed to slide usually), as long as it's on topic, even an on topic slapfight, will usually just be allowed. Massive derails are usually just split off to another thread. If so many people want to discuss something, why stop them? Just make it its own thread. This has worked out pretty well, for the most part. We don't really "gas" threads, either. SoSe mods usually just don't read threads they don't like. And even if a thread is moved to the plex, it isn't automatically locked, like it is in the gas chamber. Edit: that's not to say that the liberal minority doesn't get reminded that they are a minority, because they do. I consider myself moderate, and I've been on the receiving end of that a time or two. Again, depends upon who you ask. Reddit has been suggested. NeoGAF. And there is always more Tumblr, and it is always worse. Personally, I don't see SoSe existing without SA. Maybe that's short sighted. Or maybe it's been nearly a decade of SASSing for me and I'm growing bored. I don't really have any skin in the game. If SA folded, I'd probably give the site to someone I felt would do something funny with it.

Faux-rear end Nonsense posted:Any personal ideas about why SA draws in so many interesting characters & generates so much hilarious drama and strong feelings? Or is this the case with any online community that's large/well-known enough? The SASS take on it is that SA jettisoned its once brutally sarcastic humor in favor of Internet safe zones. This coddling brought the "characters" out of the woodwork. Some feel that the "Catlady Brigade" drove away many of the best/funniest posters, and many of those who were banned never re regged. So the core userbase shrank and also changed drastically. I didn't reg here until 2006 or maybe even 2007, so by the time I became aware of SA(and SASS) it was already in decline, according to many. I put it down to people who spend all day playing video games or posting on Internet forums being maladjusted weirdos, but what do I know? I now have tons of posts on a forum about a forum.
