Miami Law (also known as Miami Crisis in Europe and Japan) is a point’n’click/CYOA/WarioWare game developed by Hudson, starring a hard-boiled MPD cop with a vengeance Law Martin and his cool-headed FBI partner Sara Starling on their quest to defeat a drug cartel. Released in 2009, it received average reviews from the few sites that actually noted its existence and faded into obscurity soon afterwards. It doesn't even have any fanart on deviantArt! It’s not that bad, actually, so I decided you should all give it a chance via proxy.

Please don’t post spoilers from this game!

The game begins with a disclaimer assuring us that none of the characters or events are based on real events, followed by a cool splash screen showcasing the main heroes.

After touching, a menu appears. The „extra” consists of character profiles (there are none yet, but I'll post them in the OP) and music. Also, quite surprisingly, there’s more than one option. Let’s begin!

Downtown District
Miami, Florida
???: Cause and effect. It’s chapter and verse of my life so far. Start a ball rolling downhill, and it’s gonna hit something. BAM! Treat your lady badly and she’s gonna be someone else’s lady before long. Blink too long and everything you know can be gone… just like that.

???: I’m not just runnin’ off at the mouth here. Cause and effect has burned me. Six months ago, I blinked too hard and my partner paid the price. BLAM! Gone. That fast. Now it’s the time to lay down the law. And they won’t know what hit 'em.

Ha! I haven’t had a babysitter since… well, ever, man! You’re a trip!
Just looking out for you, bud.
The deal’s about to go down. Derek wants you inside.
Let’s get this party started, then.

Here’s our first area! We can Talk, Examine, Move and use our Cell Phone. Also, we got some updates in our PDA, which I’ll post at the end of the update.
Talk - Al:
Derek wants to see you, bro.
Yeah, got it.

Examine - Al: There’s a poster boy for the clueless.
Examine - Around: Al’s the only one around.

Cell Phone: Now’s not the time to reach out and touch someone.

Nothing too interesting. Let’s enter the place.

Trying to get the stink of this place off me. Where’s the customers?
They just called. I’m expecting them any minute.
Is the stuff ready?
Present and accounted for, right here.

How’d you get your hands on stuff this pure?
Dude, you totally sound like a cop when you say that.
Ha, ha, ha! A cop, man!

Shut up. He’s coming. Jack, go get him.
Right.

You might notice that Sara moved and is now on standby just outside.

Talk - Derek:
I’ll be waiting here for the cash.
Check.

Talk - Al:
Hey man, I’ll be your wingman.
Fine. Let’s go.

Examine - Derek: Derek is glaring back.
Examine - Al: He’s humming a stupid tune.
Examine - Around: This place is a mess.

Cell Phone: Probably best not to make a call now.

Back outside...

One of the first loss.jpg tributes spotted in wild.

drat it, Sara.

What the hell?!
It’s the cops, man!

They run back inside the abandoned building.
drat. How the hell did they know what was going down?

Leave it to Derek: (Losing Derek here would be a disaster.)
Let Derek Run: (If I can take out the cops here my stock in gang will rise.)

The very first choice of the game! Not a real one though, since we can’t afford to lose Derek right now, so let’s murder some cops.

Derek, leave these cops to me. I’ll take them out.
You sure?

Standard touchscreen shooting minigame. The cops will appear from behind the dumpsters or through the door, and occasionally do a silly roll on the floor. There’s only a handful of them, so despite each taking a few hits to dispatch nobody’s gonna lose this.

Like so.

Heh, nice.
Derek, go! I thought you already left! You need to get out of here…
Catch up with me later.

We switched the point of view! And apparently the SWAT team didn’t die when we killed them.

The blanks were very convincing and Law Martin is quite the actor. So far, so good…

So this is the part when Miami Law’s gimmick comes into play. Each subchapter can be played as either Law or Sara, and the story is told from their point of view, which eventually converges in the last act. It's a nice step up from the previous non-options.

Vote for whom'll we be playing as next, you've got 48 hours!

But what would happen if we weren't so willing to shoot at our coworkers?

Derek, what's the plan?
Stay alive, man. Shoot them until we clear our way outta here!
Right.

Ungh. Derek... the rear!

Shut your stupid, lazy mouth and SHOOT!
More gunshots.
... Waaah!

I love this crying sprite.
Derek. Derek!
...
He's not breathing... dammit!
(There goes the plan. Without Derek there's no way in.)

Well, that's it. No Derek, no entrance, no game. And what if we get shot to death, very slowly?

I can’t get caught here.

It gets weird. It’s not stated whether Law died by quantum bullets, or if Derek just fled after seeing he didn’t get hurt.

No votes were cast, so I defaulted to using Sara for this segment, since Law got his introductory screentime already :colbert:

This mission is to eradicate he drug syndicates in the Miami area.

Meet Larry. He looks like Christopher Walken and has the biggest head in the game. And he's Sara's boss.

Got it.
All those organizations are selling drugs from South America. But they're staging the payload in Cuba before it comes here. All roads lead to Miami in this case, so the answers have to be here.
So what is our first target?

Nick Bross, the Miami tycoon is believed to be the head of the group. He uses a trade company as a front while playing puppet master. Unfortunately, there's no evidence connecting Nick to the Syndicate. All we have at this point are circumstancial connections. You need to work with the Miami PD to gain hard evidence. If we take down Nick Bross, the entire Miami Syndicate will fall.
I'll do my best, sir.
I know you'll once again be a credit to the FBI.
Sir, I do have one question. What's the name of my Miami PD contact?

While Law gets to chill at his crib, we take a look at our office.

Talk - Larry:
You need to head to Law's place first.
His home? Okay, then.
if you don't have any further questions, you can go.
Okay, sir.

Examine - Larry: He's dressed rather well.
Examine - Photo of Nick: It's Nick Bross, Miami Syndicate boss.
Examine - Photo of Law: It's a picture of a much younger Law Martin.

Cell Phone: This isn't the time for a call.

Let's move on then. Also, I'm going to drop the cellphone descriptions from now on since 99% of them just describe how terrible the moment is to call someone.

By Investigation HQ

It's one of the hub areas in the FBI. There's a lab, the main floor and an interrogation room, but since they're empty right now we can skip them. There's one exception, though.

Main Floor

There's absolutely no indication that anyone's here at all, but you can get a sneak peek at Daniel. He doesn't get a profile.
Talk - Daniel:

They say that stuff really does sharpen your analytical skills.
It probably does help, but I've been so busy I haven't worked on it.
I completely get that. Yhis case is really heating up.
At least I know I have something to look forward to when it's over. I'll go get detective Martin so we can have a meeting. Be right back.
I'll be ready and waiting.
Thank you.

Examine - Daniel: He doesn't seem aware of anything going on around him.
Examine - Sara's Desk: Looks like a couple Sudoku books are scattered on the desk.
Examine - Larry's Desk: Memos from other agents are piled up waiting for Larry's attention.
Examine - Daniel's Desk: Documents are scattered across Daniel's desk.
Enough dawdling, let's go meet Law! Miami Law.

Miami FBI

Examine - Around: Quite a few people are going in and out.
Examine - Entrance: The surveilance camera is recording everything.
Examine - Window: I can't see inside.
Examine - Plant: It's well maintained.
Examine - Lawn: The lawn is well-maintained.

She slams right into us. Al would've been shot by now.
Oh, excuse me!

Examine - Around: Seems to be safe.
Examine - Jessica: Looks innocent enough.
Examine - Law's Apartment: Apartment looks ordinary enough.

Talk - Jessica:
I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention. I was...
Don't worry about it.
you're all right?
Yes, just fine.
Say "hi" to Law for me, girlfriend. Ha ha.
She moves offscreen.
(Girlfriend? Does she think that...) Enough delay. Time to meet the man.

And you are?
Detective Martin, I'm FBI Agent Sara Starling. Nice to meet you. Chief Gibson should've briefed you already.
Oh yeah. The Chief alalready gave me the bad news.
That's the first time I've been called "bad news".
The point is, I can finish what Sam started... without the FBI.
The briefing had you pegged: it called you reckless, uncooperative.
What did you just say?
Sam Browne.
That's not it, Sara, try again!
!!

He was working undercover on the Miami Syndicate case.
...
He was your partner and a very close friend.
He was the best partner anyone could ask for.
And that's why you need to be careful not to make this about revenge. Our job is to bring criminals to justice. That's all.
Spare me the sermon.
It's necessary that we're clear. You work under FBI authority now.

Since the transmitter is so small it requires a special receiver. One is at Miami PD, the other is at the FBI office. I can manage the system from either location. The transmitter's battery is the only weak point.
I don't need that high-tech crap. I'll be fine.
We can use it to keep tabs on you so you don't damage the case. "Reckless" and "uncooperative" have earned you this.
Way to build trust, girl.
You could at least candy-coat it.
The good news is you only need it when you're on-duty and alone.
Thank heavens for small favors, I guess.
Since that's out of the way, here's the case briefing:

If we can use this to takehim out, the Miami Syndicate will collapse.
Now comes the part when you tell me something new.
...
Only a few executive-level members are allowed to see Nick in person. You need to gain trust in the group to gain access to Nick.
Okay, NOW comes the new part, right?
:allears:
A plan to infiltrate the organization has been made. All you have to do is follow the instructions.

And that's it for Sara's segment! Voting's open again for 48 hours, if I don't get any votes again I'll keep on zig-zagging through the characters.

Welcome back! Last time, we were supposed to have a meeting at Miami FBI.

But before that, let's snoop through Law's things.
Talk - Sara:
So how do I use this PDA thing?

Let me explain. An FBI Personal Digital Assistant contains case records and profiles. When the PDA notifies you or if you want to check records, select PDA.
With you so far.
The investigation progress will be stored and updated in CASE RECORDS. It's useful for a reference or if you need to check case progress. Information about individuals is kept under PROFILES. You can check profiles to find out background information in the field. When the PDA is updated, you'll be notified. Any questions?
Nope.
Just one more thing.
I can hardly wait.
I can track your location with the GPS in the PDA.
Is that a threat?
No. As your partner, I'll be able to track you so I can assist.
Sounds like a threat to me. And YOU are not my partner.
Believe what you like. We don't have to be buddies to get this done. The mission is to take down Miami Syndicate, that's it.
...
It's a job, Law. Let's just try to get this over with.

Examine - Sara: Not getting friendly vibes there.
Examine - Poster: A picture of a car from the 80's.
Examine - Desk: Cold coffee with a film of old creamer.
Examine - Magazine on Desk: A muscle-car magazine with a little cheesecake on the cover.
Examine - Photo:

:(
Examine - Sideboard: A 45-caliber service caliber revolver lies in the case.
Examine - Plant: Augusta's Bird of Paradise. Nice.

Moving outside...

Law's Apartment.

Talk - Sara:

I don't know. My case is eradication of the Miami Syndicate. If that somehow fits into what you're doing, I don't know. And frankly, I don't care. I'm just concentrating on the job.
Whoa. Afterburners off, there. (I have a headache already)
That was cute... in the 8th grade. Let's get this over with.
Can't disagree with that.
Examine - Around: No signs of being followed there.
Examine - Sara: Poker face is on.

Christ, enough of the exposition. Let's meet Daniel before he dies of old age. The move screen now features some location foreshadowing:

Except when you click on them all you get is:
Umm, Detective Martin? We're headed to the FBI, remember?

Weird.

Miami FBI.

Talk - Sara:
We'll meet with Agent Daniel at Investigation HQ.
Right. (She sure isn't one to make small talk.)
Law, you've never said more than a single word or an insult to her, I don't think Sara's to blame here.

Examine - Sara: Hard to tell what she's thinking.

The rest of descriptions aren't unique to characters. Before the meeting, we'll make a stop on the Main Floor to chat with Daniel.
Talk - Daniel:

Yes, and I've brought Detective Law Martin, from Miami PD.
Agent Daniel, pleased to meet you.
Likewise.
Let's get the meeting started, then.
We should go to the Investigation HQ.

Talk - Daniel:
So, to Investigation HQ, then?
We'll meet you there.

By Investigation HQ

Talk - Sara:
Let's go inside.
Make this short and simple.
It will be.

Talk - Daniel:

Examine - Sara: She's carrying documents.
Examine - Daniel: He's humming softly.

Let's get this finally over with.

Examine - Sara: Loks very confident.
Examine - Daniel: Looks calm and composing.

Talk - Sara:

And then?
The SWAT will attack them. You'll play the hero and save the bad guys.
Simple enough.

Talk - Sara:
So I'll be the one introducing Daniel to Derek?
Yes. You need to introduce Daniel as a client. By the way, what's Derek's personality profile?
Short-tempered muscle, plain and simple. Really simple, in fact. His nickname is "Watchdog" in the group. He's got a short fuse.
I want you to really massage his ego. Make him feel invincible.
Wait a minute. If you're heading to a "happy ending" with this, I'm out.
:gay:
Can you be serious? You need him to be in the mood to accept the offer.
I can do that, but it was starting to sound ike a date.
Law, please.
Okay, okay, I pump the guy's ego and make him a little vulnerable.
Then SWAT will break in.
And I pretend to take them out.
Exactly. That will help you gain the trust of Derek and his group.

Talk - Sara:
And that's it?
Yes.

Talk - Daniel:
Any experience with drug dealing?
Yes. We are the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but we're versatile.
Well, that's Federally refreshing. Since it's the first deal, we'll need to ask for a larger quantity.
I agree. I'm requesting a 10-brick.
Sounds like you have it covered.

Talk - Daniel:
What's your identity?
Up to you, Law.
Okay. You're a talent manager.
And I'm such a nice guy, I get drugs for my squeaky-clean stars.
Yeah... To protect their image. How 'bout we call you Pete.
Heh, play on words. I like it.

Finally we get to use the phone! It's not just for show.
Cell Phone - Derek:

I have a line on a hot deal.
I'm listening.
He wants the high-quality Cuban stuff.
Dude's got expensive taste. Can we trust him?
He manages a talent agency. Can you have it ready or not? Well... if not, he already knows too much, so you'd have to finish him off.
This is what street-level drug peddlers do, just so you know.
No, wait. Bring him downtown. I'll size him up there and decide what to do.
All right, we're out of here.

Talk - Sara:

Your wireless monitor will allow me to keep tabs on you.

Talk - Daniel:

Are you ready?
Ready as I'll ever be.

And so they went downtown.

Examine - Derek: He's smoking... er, toking, it seems.
Examine - Daniel: He doesn't seem at all nervous.
Examine - Around: No one new to talk with.

So why not talk with the old guys?
Talk - Derek:

I hear you're the magic man. Jack has spoken highly of you.
Yeah? So, Jack, where'd you find him?
He's an associate of one of my regulars.
Always looking for new business to bring me, eh, Jack?

Talk - Derek:

Pete, tell Derek here what you're looking to buy.

Talk - Daniel

Jack tells me you have some good stuff that's come through Cuba.
10 brick, huh? That's a pretty hefty amount. It will take some time to get.
What's he talking about, Jack? You said he'd have it ready in no time! Some of my talent will be jonesing when my stash runs out!
Calm down, Pete.
I can get regular stuff right away, but the stuff from Cuba takes time. We don't have something as big as a 10 brick at the drive-thru.

Talk - Daniel:
Well, when can you get it?
Soon enough. I'll have Jack contact you when it's ready to go.
I have a busy schedule. Can't we set an exact time?
I won't know until I have him contact you.

Talk - Derek:

Look, Jack, it's not that easy. I don't know yet! Just slow down, okay?
I know this isn't an easy deal to set up. But if you pull it off, you're looking at a promotion, right?
True.
Then the deal is important to you, too. So, let's get a date to do it.
I'll see what I can do to speed it up.
How long, then?
One month from today, I'll have it ready for you.
I think I can hold out until then, as long as you're sure.
Look, man, it will be ready.
Actually, when this deal closes, I bet we BOTH get promoted.
Then you're lucky I'm the one in charge of getting this done. It's a sure thing.
Yeah.

:3:

Aaand we're back to the present. As you might recall, we're probably not getting promoted.
Examine - Al: Seems to be relieved.
Examine - Derek: Definitely looking angry.
Examine - Desk: What a dump. I need some sanitizer.
Examine - Map: The marker shows the location of Derek's hideout.
Examine - Whisky bottle: Derek's drink of choice.

Talk - Al/Derek:

I wasn't so sure we would.
(Sara should be catching all this on the wireless transmitter.)
Still freaked out, bro?
No, man, just thinking.

Uh oh. Eric is Derek's direct boss. Not THE boss, but still not someone you want to disappoint.
The Deal went south when the cops showed up.
Cops? Did they get the drugs?

Jack here was the hero that held 'em back so we could get away.
Hero, eh?
Keep your mouth shut, Al.

You're lucky to have Jack to save your skin. If you lost the stuff, your number would have been up.
Oh yeah? Says who? You? You need to learn your place. I don't care if you're the boss' right-hand man or not. This is my deal, and it's about time you start showing me some respect!
...
I'm not taking any more crap from you, got it?
Ok. I see what you're saying, and I get it. You do deserve more.
That's more like it.
We need to go in the back room and discuss what to do about this. Just leader to leader. Your men don't need to be involved.
:sissies:
Yeah... right. We don't need to involve them.

A position in the Miami Syndicate opened unexpectedly. Are you interested in taking the lead dealer job?
Me? Man, I ain't got the brains to pull that off. Uh... I... I gotta take a leak.
Al runs offscreen. I don't blame him.
...idiot. Hrm. So tell me, who set this deal up that went bad?

I did: (Eric won't take responsibility, so it'll fall on me.)
It was Derek: (Derek is already dead, so he can take the blame.)

I have a feeling that the truth isn't exactly what Eric would like to hear.
(Maybe honesty isn't the best policy.) Derek set the deal up.
Really?

It sure did change everything. I made the right call, then.
If that position's still open, I'd, like to take it.
Confident. I like it.
Yeah, but I also know my place in group, unlike Derek.
And you are?
Jack. Jack Spencer.
I don't know if the name is some kind of reference or not.
I haven't seen you around.
I've been around.
Oh yeah? What were you doing before?
I did some time for drug smuggling. Took the fall for the boss. When I got out three months ago, he was dead and my gang busted up.
Seems you've had a colorful life so far.
You won't regret giving me this job.
It's yours, on one condition.
What's that?
I need to check your story. Where'd you do time?
Arkansas State Pen.
Arkansas, huh? Just give me a minute.
What are you doing?

I'm gonna hack the prison network to check out your story.
You're a regular Mitnick, eh?
Nothing like that, but I get around in cyberspace. If this all checks out, the job is yours. It WILL check out, right?
Yeah.
Wait here. I'll be right back.

Well, this is bad. Surely Law has ensured some kind of failsafe for this kind of scenarios, right...?
Talk - Sara:
Did you hear that?

If he doesn't find my records in the computer, this is going bad, fast.
Arkansas State Penitentiary?
Yes. Hurry!
We'll never make it...
Stop talking and start doing.
I'm already on it. Just calm down.

In the previous episode, Eric was about to get our cover blown! Will Sara hack the prison databases on time?

You have to tap the correct answers in a proper movie-style FBI hacking sequence. Sara will mutter some words on the upper screen during this.

Law said Arkansas... Who has the jurisdiction of the prison? I think Law said State Prison. The charge is... um, narcotic trafficking! Done!

We're safe, for now.
Talk - Eric:

Satisfied?
Yeah, you're good.
Now that we both know that, let's both stop wasting time.
Ha ha. You got spirit. I like that. The boss will, too.
Can't wait to meet Nick.
Wait... who told you that?
:downs:
Nick Bross is a legend on the street. You think that's a secret?
Maybe you're just the kind of guy this organizatino needs right now.

Kelly's not only bad, but also drawn that way.
I dodn't hear you come in, Kelly. What gave you the urge to share?
He's playing it too strong, and he's selling himself too hard.
Is that female intuition?
Call it what you like. I'm rarely wrong, and I don't like him.
Well this is the second time, because you were wrong about this outfit, too.
Whoa there. Insulting the clothes?
Haha. Sounds a little desperate. And I don't like desperation.
I'll show you desperate!

Examine - Eric: He's talking to Kelly.
Examine - Kelly: She's looking around suspiciously.

Talk - Eric:
Jack, watch yourself around Kelly. I wouldn't uderestimate her.
Maybe you should be giving her the reverse warning instead.
Just remember, I warned you.
I'll be sure to remind you at Christmas and Easter.

Let's yell at our superior! What's the worst that could happen, right, Der- oh.
Talk - Kelly:
He's got a short fuse, too.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Just slow this down a few steps. I think I have a way to solve this and get you two on the same page. I want a test.
What is this? School?
No, not that kind. A task. I want you to prove you can do the job. So the test will be this: I want you to steal the Cuban Connection's stash.

Break into their warehouse. Steal everything they've got... ...and I'll take you to meet Nick. What do you say?
I say that's crazy. No one can do a job like this alone!
Who know? You might go further in this organization than Derek did. And Kelly might even start to like you. What do you say?
This time, Law is the cheap fiddle.
... Okay, I'll do it.
I'm counting on you, now.
1000$ says he fails.
I'll take that bet. I like the man.
Whatever. It's your mistake. I'll take your money all day long.
She goes away.
Okay Jack, the stakes are even higher now. Make me proud.
The Cuban Connection won't know what hit 'em.

Talk - Kelly:

(Great. Another chick with a life sentence in bitch prison.)

Talk - Eric:
What are you doing? I don't want to see you until you have the stuff!
Yeah, yeah, I understood that part. Any info come in on the CC?
We haven't heard squat. If we had, we would have taken on the CC. You've got to take the position and the goods from those guys.
(And talk is cheap.) ...right.

Let's check out Eric's computer! I bet he won't mind.

Bummer. Stealing coke it is, then.

I think it might be worth mentioning that this update was one of the few parts in the game where choosing the character does absolutely nothing, you go through the same actions and dialogue.

Only the BE update today, I'm working on a backlog :)

---

In the failureverse, Sara wasn't able to remember a short sentence.

I believe the location is Florida. Who has the jurisdiction of the prison? County Prison...? The charge is... ah... possession of narcotics. Done!

Did you find what you needed?
Yeah. I found out you're a dirty liar. Who are you, really?

Yeah, and you're it.

Law!! Laaaaaaw...

Snaaake! On her second try, Sara was unable to type it in the given time. Not that it would save Law, who can't keep his excuses straight. Also, I lied, there's a small difference in the chapters: the incidental dialog in this minigame is a bit different.

The location is definitely Florida! Federal Prison!! I told him so! I was a scapegoat for the charge of... robbery!
...?! Eric hacked in!
We don't have enough time!

Did you get the records inserted?

Who the hell are you, really?
W... wait!

Law! Laaaaaaw!!

I don't know if the 1000 yard stare was intended by the artist, but it's great.

I've never heard of this game. The dialogue is pretty goofy so far, but I love a good goofy cop story. Just from what we've seen so far it looks like Law's POV is more interesting, considering he has to actually deal with criminals face to face. Sara is just... with a bunch of FBI suits. (No, Law, the FBI has NO EXPERIENCE with DRUGS.)

Let's go with Sara this time. Not only because we've been hanging around with Law a lot lately, but also because his side of this part of the story ruins a twist we'll be seeing in the second time around.

I need to find out where that warehouse is and inform Law. I hope the Miami PD know where it is.

Examine - Around: Everyone seems quite busy.
Examine - Chief Gibson: Middle-aged male gentleman.
Examine - Law's Desk: Looks like a detective works here.
Examine - Michael's Desk: The investigation records are scattered around...
Examine - Olajuwon's Desk: Looks like a CD Tsunami hit his desk.

Talking to a gentlemn might be a nice change of pace after spending time with Law.
Talk - Chief Gibson:
Chief, do you have a minute?

Do you have any information regarding the Cuban Connection warehouse?
CC's warehouse? If we knew that, we would have taken it out already.
Do you have any leads, then? No piece of information is too small.
I'm sorry, there's nothing new. CC's been low-profile for a couple years.
Two years?
How did you get that number?
Yes. Only their minor dealers have been active. And in that time, another organization has filled the void.
The Miami Syndicate.
Right. We used to have an officer assigned to cover the CC's case.
Is he still here?
Yes. He's been transferred, but you might want to interview him.
I believe I will, thank you. Maybe he'll have something that's not in the reports.

He didn't tell us where to find that man, though.
Talk - Chief Gibson:
By the way, you need to go to the evidence room.
On my way.

Examine - Around: Steve is reading some documents.
Examine - Behind Bars: It's a mountain of evidence.
But that's not proper a sorting technique!
Examine - Steve: Looks like an honest man.

Talk - Steve:
Agent Starling, FBI.

It's Steve! He's got a sob story that'll make you think he's gonna die next episode.
I'm sorry, I don't need evidence. I was looking for information. I need to find the Detective that was handling the Cuban Connection case.
Oh, well what do you need to know?
You're the one I'm looking for?
Yes, I'm the former investigator, Steve Edwards.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up here?

I really only have one pressing question I need to ask.
I'm all ears.
Do you have any idea where the CC narcotics are being stored?
You don't play around! The CC warehouse location, huh?
Precisely.
I never could get a lock on it since they regularly change locations.
Do you have any idea where I could start looking for it?
That's a tough one because only their low-level dealers are active. About the only choice you have is to talk to them and see what they know.
Or rather, make them talk.
They used to hang out at Miami Beach. I'm sure they're still there.
Well, thank you for your assistance. I need to tell Law what I learned.

Another call, the phone is getting more and more use!
Cell Phone - Law:

How is everything going on your end?
Sunshine and gumdrops. That's what you wanted to hear, right?
I didn't call for jokes. I have some information about the CC.
Lay it on me.
They have their low-level dealers in the Miami Beach area. You need to find one and get him to talk. It's the only way.
Put the thumbscrews to a pusher? I can do that, no problem.
That's right, but don't go too far. And keep the transmitter ON!
Yeah, yeah, I'll keep the babysitter on so you can listen in. I'm heading out to Miami Beach now.

Examine - Sky: Another fine day in Miami.
Examine - Children: Looks like they're having fun.
Examine - Around: Hope it doesn't get crowded. Crowds make me nervous.

After you look around, more options appear!
Examine - Playboy: That is an example of what not to wear to the beach. Ugh.
Examine - Serious Man: Looks like a businessman.
Examine - Big Man: I'm getting a strong, bossy vibe.
Examine - Timid Man: That guy makes a mouse look brave.

They all might know something. Maybe they'll comply?

Talk - Playboy:

Talk - Serious Man:

Talk - Big Man:

Talk - Timid Man:

They're all useless. Of course. Time for the plan B!

A new icon popped up. Time to ruffle some feathers. You need to threaten the right guy two times.
Use Force - Timid Man:

Law! This is against regulations!
I don't need your approval.

Use Force - Big Man:

(......)

Use Force - Serious Man:

Law, what do you think you're doing? Threatening civilians is not the way to get results here!
Save the lectures, sweetpea. I have this under control.

Use Force - Playboy:

You know why they call me Happy? Shhh! It's a secret. Hahahahah. I bet I can make you Happy, too.
...Yeah, I think we found our drug dealer.
(Gun?) Law! What are you thinking? That's against the regulations! I'll call for some officers to handle the situation.
I don't need a lecture.

Use Force - Playboy:
Hey man, wanna get happy?

Prop Positioning? Happy ain't no movie prop, man. Happy's got what you need to have a little magic in your day.

Answer me! Are you dealing for the Cuban Connection?
Happy does lots of things, man.
So where's the warehouse for the stuff?
Happy ain't got that kind of info.
Try that again. You're making me very UNhappy, and that's not wise.
Buzzkill! Buzzkill, man! Happy don't know!
I'm gonna ask you one more time, real nice-like, then it gets ugly. Where is the warehouse for the Cuban Connection?

Happy only knows where they do business.
So? Spill it!
56 Park Street, man. Second floor.
You better not send me on a wild goose chase, or...
No, man. Happy isn't looking for trouble like that.
That's in the Art Deco district...
See? Now we're all Happy! But some happier than others... hee hee hee.

I heard it all.
If he's not lying, it will be easy to find. I know right where that is.
Detective Martin, wasn't the gun a little too much force?
I dunno. Seemed to make the encounter very productive.
But you should consider...
...Your feelings, I know. But I was never good at that relationship crap. If that's everything, I have to go. I have a warehouse to raid.
I'll be heading that way as well. Wait near the fron of the building. I repeat... wait for me. Do not break in until I get there.
You better not be late, or I might get impatient.

Hee... hee... hee...

Examine - Happy: His face has fear written all over it.
Talk - Happy:
P... please don't shoot!

That was pretty productive! Let's go, the warehouse won't be waiting forever.

Sorry. Traffic.
Hey man, Happy did what he said. Ya gotta let happy run free. If they see Happy with you, it's Game Over for Happy times.
Law, let him go.
You're the boss...
Hee... hee... hee...

He runs away.

Wouldn't it be prudent to oserve the situation first?
If "prudent" was the criteria, I wouldn't be working with the FBI.

Looks like the place hasn't seen much action lately.
There don't seem to be any drugs, just empty crates.

Fixed those, thanks.
All things considered, pretty well. What can't be glanced from the LP is the fact that the game's actually pretty short, and despite various pitfalls everywhere, a full playthrough is... 5-8 hours, if you're a fast reader. Maybe even faster on the second way through, since some scenes are reused, and Sara's portions are overall shorter. I think there's enough differences between both paths to warrant a second playthrough if you like the game. :v:

I think she pulls out two as a number because couple means two. It's just not used for that purpose very much.

We're going with Sara again. There's a reason for this, I swear, but it'll show later.

S; It does appear to be some kind of textile.
Might be useful.
Yes, a detailed analysis could provide a clue.
Then get to to analyzing, sweetcakes!
Not here. The equipment we'll need is at the FBI field office.
Then off we go.

We didn't get a good look at the place before.
Examine - Law: Heading towards the exit.
Examine - Around: No signs of anyone hiding.
Examine - TV: Just a crappy TV.
Examine - Poster: There's no relevant information here.
Examine - Sideboard: There's nothing inside.
Examine - Darts: Hmm...
Examine - Under Sofa: Nothing here but dust.

Talk - Law:

Fine, let's move out. Now, at this point you might either go straight to the FBI or talk to Law, which will initiate a small detour. This being an LP, I'm gonna do the latter.

Examine - Law: He's walking fast.
Examine - Around: Not a sould around.
Examine - Vehicle: No one is inside.
Examine - Building Window: No one seems to be around.
Examine - Building Exterior: There's no surveillance camera.
Examine - Poster: A poster announcing a live show in Little Havana.
Examine - Crate: Looks like someone likes Mojitos.

Talk - Law:

 Normally I'd blame the translators for this kind of lines, but it's an all-american game.
Can't we have our local lab do the analysis on that fabric?
If they have the proper equipment, I don't see a problem. Why?
Well...
(It might be a good idea to get the local CSI unit involved anyway...)
Can't we just have the local CSI unit double-check it?
The fiber pattern just needs to be checked with the Electron Microscope, and then have the results compared with the fiber database. A double-check is just overkill for something this basic. But if you insist, I can talk to Chief Gibson.
If you don't mind.

Talk - Law:
(I suppose I'll ask Chief Gibson for CSI and forensics cooperation.)

What's wrong? Should we go now?
Yes, we need to hurry.

Miami PD it is then. Most players will likely skip this part completely.

Examine - Law: Looking this way.
Examine - Around: A junkie is being taken into custody.
Examine - By Entrance: The flag flaps gently in the breeze.
Examine - Palm Tree: The palm leaves are rustling.

Talk - Law:
Where is Chief Gibson?

An office check is probably the first course of action.
Agreed.

Examine - Situation Inside: The blinds block the view into the office.
Examine - Photo: It's a group photo of the Miami PD.
Examine - Commendation: This commendation is for Miami PD's stellar conviction rate.

I don't really know why they split so many areas into the By X and the area proper. It's silly.

Examine - Gibson: He's looking a little out of shape.
Examine - Wall: The wall is heavy with framed commendations and awards.
Examine - Old Photo: The Chief looked much different when he was younger.
Examine - Trophy: At one time, Miami PD had the best conviction rate in the country.

Is that really such a commendable thing? Anyway, time to talk to Gibson. Sure, we have an FBI analyst on our team, but we can bug the police for this.

Talk - Gibson:
Chief Gibson, I'd like to ask your opinion.
Shoot.
Your local CSI team - how good are they?

I mean, they're as good as any CSI team around, maybe better. But, they're not magical TV land fantasy miracle crew.
Well, are they busy right now? If they can spare the resources, I'd like them to check this fabric.
Ahh... Now I see what you're getting at! Unfortunately, Agent Starling, our officers are working at a scene. Just happened a few hours ago. The CSI team is headed there to work on evidence analysis. They'll have their hands full for some time.
I see. Well, thank you anyway.

Talk - Gibson:
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

(Looks like the local CSI team is out of the question for this case.)

Bummer. Looks like Sara will actually have to do something. To the FBI!

This is equipment to do textile fabric analysis. Let's get started.

Minigame time! Except this time it's literally matching patterns. A braindead child could do that in their sleep.

Sara gets shafted in the gameplay department most of the time.

Ah! This is a special Cuban type of lace. There is a large amount of import traffic that would have this cloth.
So there's a Cuban-type lace in the box, and then... what's this? There's some kind of white substance there from the crate. Dope, maybe?
Let me test it in the kit.

The drug ws probably transported in these crates.
So the warehouse is probably at the port.
And I would say that if we find the warehouse holding Cuban textiles...
We will find the Cuban Connection hideout.
What are we waiting for, then? To the port!

Buzzkill, man!
Ed over at port management updates the port database and I have access.

Examine - Law: Looking this way.
Examine - Around: Expensive equipment is everywhere.
Examine - PC

Oh man, I doubt even Sara can read their weird alphabet. Shouldn't Interpol be handling this?

Talk - Law:
We're in luck. There's only one hit! An importer owns the warehouse. The record says the owner of the warehouse is in Georgia.
Well then we have our target, right? The CC drugs have to be there!
Seems to be the case. You go to the warehouse. I'll follow you from the command post. Keep your transmitter ON!
Right, yeah. Got it.
It's very important that you...
I know, I know... time is wasting! I've gotta go...
Law runs away.
But... ...wait. Wait! ...Law...

We're going to be in the middle of all the action with Law today.

There're two thugs advertising the warehouse location. I'm sure there's a lead battalion inside as well.
I'll access the port security camera and see what else I can uncover. When I have the available areas analyzed, I'll be back with you.
Okay. I'll just sit tight.

Examine - Warehouse 35: Only two men are visible.
As if you couldn't just cap them. Let's see what Sara uncovered.

Talk - Sara:
Law, there's too many of them to handle yourself. I'm sending a backup squad. Wait for them to arrive.
Are you crazy? Eric will KNOW I'm a cop if you do that! I'm getting too close to Nick to let you mess it up for me.

Says you.
Law, I can't approve this operation.
Then tell them when it's done I did it without approval. Wish me luck.
He moves away. I can't help but wonder how that will help if his transmitter is attached to his ear, but hey.
Law!!

What are you going to-

...oh. Well.

You just need to watch out for the garbage strewn around, it's not hard, because there's less of it on a single track than it's needed to deplete the car's health. You'll bust the warehouse regardless of speed at the end.

Jesus Christ, Law. This is less "reckless" and more "suicidal".

Yet another shooting minigame. This one is a bit special, since it's introducing multiple rooms. Your health doesn't regenerate between them, so better start using that cover!

They have machine guns, though, which might make it a bit more difficult.

Law!!

That was reckless, Detective Martin.
Well it sure got better results than your discussion group was getting.
Look, Detective Martin. You are still under FBI authority, understand? Pull that kind of reckless stunt again and you WILL regret it.
Why are we still talking about this? I got the drugs. My cover isn't blown. Now we can get this mission back on track and take down Bross.
But the outcome of your reckless behavior will not always be positive. You need to practice some restraint so it doesn't become about revenge.
Look, I understand what you need to do, but leave Sam out of this. There's nothing I could do as payback for what they did to him... If they think they'll get away with this, they're wrong. Dead wrong.
Calm down, Detective Martin. Our job is to bring them to justice. What judges and juries do with them after that isn't for us to decide.
Yeah, right. That's the way it goes in your perfect world. This isn't that world! I'd give my career up to get revenge for Sam!

...Law?
!!

poo poo. Some kind of plan probably could've helped at this point, Law.

So, you are a cop.
Uh...

Shoot her: (Too bad for her she walked in when she did. Now she'll pay for it.)
Talk fast: (With that gun in my face, this better be SOME story, Detective Martin.)

She has Law at gunpoint and he doesn't even have a gun up. I don't expect him to be a master diplomat but it's still the better choice!
(Time to do some fast talking.) Kelly, this isn't what it looks like. Put the gun down and let me explain.
:downs: Brilliant!

Lucky for you I'm one of the good guys. My name is Kelly Camp, DEA.

You seem surprised.
I checked the database. The name matches, but there's no photo. Her profile says she's Hispanic, if that helps.
Seems about right.
About right for what?
Oh, uh, nothing. So you're undercover on the Miami Syndicate case also?
Yes, we have the same goal: take out the Miami Syndicate. We can work as a team, Jack.
But why didn't we know DEA was in this too? And uh, it's Law Martin.
It's a deep cover operation that hit a snag. That's all I know... Law.

Examine - Kelly: That is one exotic-looking piece of...
Note: this reaction can only be gotten after her revealing herself as DEA. Stay classy, Law!

Talk - Kelly:

You knew Sam??
Yes. He was the snag I talked about. We were working together.

Probably didn't want to put you in danger. It's a risky operation. He was great to work with, though. One of a kind guy...
Yeah, I know. Him getting killed really messed with my head.
Sounds like we are both on the same page then.
So, do you know how I can get closer to Nick Bross? If I can connect the dots to him, I can take down the Miami Syndicate.
That will be difficult because he's so cautious. I've been undercover for a long time and haven't seen him once.
drat. This is turning into an impossible mission.
Maybe not. There might be a chance today.
Chance?
Yeah, something I overheard. They were talking about him coming to the deal today.
Is it reliable information?
Yes. Eric said the deal was big and Nick would be coming in person. It's a big window of opportunity that won't come again for a while.
I need to get invited to be there when that deal comes down, then!
That's why I was following you. If you bring those drugs to Eric... ...you'll gain his trust and he might bring you to the other deal.
Sounds like a long shot.
I'll talk you up to Eric as well to help him make the decision. If we're working together, we can take these bastards down... for Sam.

Wait Law! We're still not sure she's who she says she is.

Trust Kelly: This is the only shot I've got at getting to Nick, I have to go.
Think about it: Kelly might be playing me for a fool. Better listen to Sara.

Let's not trust the suspicious badly-dressed pseudo-DEA agent and play it safe.
Kelly, I need more time to consider your offer.
What? What're you talking about? There won't be another chance...
I just need some time to think and make the right decision.
There's no time! The deal is going down tonight!

That's a damned shame. We could have been such good partners.
I'll be in touch.
I guess we'll just mind our own business and work separately.
Yeah.
Kelly goes away.
Did you catch that, Sara?

There will be another opportunity if it's the right time.
One way or another I'll arrest Nick and avenge Sam's death.
Back to the task at hand. Take the drugs you confiscated to Eric.
On my way.

To Eric!

Impressive. I'll be keeping my eye on you.
Thanks. So, do I have the job?
At least, man! As of today, you're Operations Leader.
Nice.
And? You don't seem too excited...
No, I'm cool with it. I wouldn't have got the drugs if I didn't want it.
Okay, well then, I have a job for you tonight.

No, I just want you to run an errand delivering to a street dealer. I'll be tied up doing a big deal tonight, so I can't come with you.
You're doing a big deal tonight? I bet Bross will be there.
Wait. What makes you say that? No one knows what Bross does. Has Kelly opened her fat mouth and put nonsense in your head?

She might have: (I got the info about Nick from Kelly. Will that tip Eric off?)
I heard nothing: (Hope this answer isn't too evasive for Eric.)

It does sound evasive, and Eric has killed for less.

I knew I shouldn't have trusted that mouthy bitch.
What do you mean?
She's DEA, man.
(Did she get caught already?)
She was undercover trying to get close to the boss.
Where is she now?
Where she belongs. Probably floating in Biscayne Bay by now.
Like many other things in this game, Kelly is basically a Schrodinger's Cat. Dead and alive, until you make the choice.
(Kelly!)
I'm sorry I can't introduce you to the boss just yet. The discovery of Kelly put everyone off their game. He said he wanted to lay low for a while, and I have to respect that.
Understood.
I will keep my promise and introduce you, but not just yet.
Seems like you don't have a choice. (I better wait until he lowers his guard before I press to meet Nick.)
So here's the errand for you I was talking about.
Yeah, I'm ready to go.

Wait, what?!

Thinking about all the stuff I've done to prove myself is sickening.

Nothing much going on, and no info on Nick.
Nothing to report on this end, either.
drat.
It's a slow investigation. Just keep your eyes and ears open.
Until what? I mean, we're not making any progress at all!
Stay calm, Detective Martin.
Yeah, yeah. Easy for you to say.
You've managed to get deeper into their organization than even Sam! Don't let all that hard work come to nothing!
Right... Sam.
So, stay focused.
You're right. I'll keep my eyes and ears open on the job.

The occasional calls from Sara are the only thing that keeps me sane. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even remember I'm a cop.

Hi, Al! :3: Long time no see.
What up, Al?
A: You're looking like the MAN these days. It's so awesome, dude.
What do you want, Al? I'm kind of busy right...
A: Don't be a scary buzz-smasher, bro! I got a message from Eric. He wants you to take some guys and go do a deal for him.
drat. Okay, tell Eric I'm on it.
A: Sure thing.
(Where's the deal going down? I need to ask someone...)

Who'd know better than Eric himself? Let's ~*call*~ him.

Cell Phone - Eric:

Eric, it's me.
Jack? What the hell are you doing? The deal's about to go down!
I know, man. Where is it?
Jack, Jack. This isn't like you to forget. Do you need a break? It's at Miami Beach. You really don't remember?
Right... right. I'm on it.
This isn't a good time to be blowing your good rep, man. The boss will be in on this one.

Yeah, the client is an old friend of his.
Wow, I can't believe it.
I told you I would introduce you to him!
That you did.
But you can't be making mistakes to make me look bad.
Right. No more mistakes.

Sam, you grab a front row seat for this... stone cold payback.

Let's go, time's a wasting! Nick is there, finally we can finish the game!

To capture Nick I'll need backup.

Cell Phone - Sara:

You'll never believe this. Nick's coming to the tonight!
You're certain?
Yes, yes! Get a backup squad together and wait. The deal's going down soon.
Understood. What's the location?
Miami Beach. I won't know specifics until I get there.
Got it. I'll track your PDA location.
Thanks.

Gonna head down to the beach, gonna do some beachy things

Yeah.
Your location and conversation will be monitored. When Nick shows up and the deal is in progress, we'll break in. You need to establish the link between Nick and the drug deal. Try to get as much spoken and keep a cool head.
Don't worry. I waited too long for this. I won't blow it.

I have enough help to get the job done.
Should have expected that.

Oh, right, you don't know that name. So, is the client here?
Not yet.
Boss, sorry for the delayed introduction. This is Jack.
So, I finally get to meet the legendary Jack. Eric here's told me stories about you. You're quite the find.
Nick! And he trusts me!
Jack is my right hand man. He's managing the street-level business. He's got a temper, but he's a very reliable guy.
Well, keep up the good work, Jack.
Sure thing, boss.

A telephone rings.

We've verified Nick is there. The arrest will happen with the deal.
(I've waited for this day for so long! Sam would be proud.)

What?
What? What's going on?
Fernando was attacked by the Cuban Connection on his way here.
Boss, we need to get out of here right away. It's not safe now. Jack, you stay behind and mop up if anyone shows up.

What?

Shoot Nick: (I can't miss this opportunity! I have to take action!)
Let Nick run: (I need to stay rational and wait for the next chance.)

We've gotten so close... and yet, in his heart, Law is still a cop. He'll not shoot a white civilian without reason.
We haven't established a connection between Nick and the drugs. We can't break in and make the arrest yet.
(Why now? On the day I finally get to meet Nick!) drat!
What's wrong?

Boss, we have to go. Now!
drat it!
Law, calm down.
It was the chance I've been waiting for, and now it's gone. drat it!
We'll just have to wait for another chance.
But how much longer? How many crimes do I have to commit? I can't do this much longer. I'm starting to lose it.

Am I the law or a criminal? Thinking about it gives no answer. Whatever I've become, today is the time to commit another crime. All in the name of justice...

Well, that’s it for Miami Law, thank you for reading!

End Session?

Haha, that was great. I was totally buying into the timejump as a real thing. I guess we're going back to help out our assistant not sleep with the fishes.

Also, for anyone interested in this undercover cop stuff, there is a book about someone going undercover to break up a biker gang. "No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels". Grab it at your library if you want something like the LP, just a bit more real.

I'm quite sad that the company never made more games like this, and had a chance to expand the minigames a little.

I read some of it and can back the book recommendation, it's hella good.

Also:

Blinking sprites make me mad because of stuff like this. How did I even manage to screenshot a speeded-up synced blink?

Well… let’s try to avoid the mistake of not trusting Kelly this time.

Sara, no time to think.
Huh? What?
Nothing. I trust you, Kelly.
Sure thing. Let's end this tonight, partner.

Flashback time.

Sam: There's a case at Ocean Drive. I'm counting on you, partner.

Just getting ready for this. We've got nothing to worry about though, right?
Right! Let's get this over with!
For Sam.
Kelly disappears.

I feel it necessary to remind you not to act rashly. We should consider sending a backup squad and...

Huh?
I'm turning off the transmitter.
Hold it...

Law's ideas are just getting better and better.

Talk - Eric:

drat, man! Impressive work. I'll be keeping my eye on you now!
And I'll keep impressing.
Kelly, get a load of this! Jack is our MAN! And you owe me $1000.
If you say so. I'm good for it.
Ha! I'm taking this guy to the deal today. And, I don't care what you think.
...
...
Suit yourself.
It's almost time. We need to head over to the deal location. This is your lucky day, Jack. Nick will be at the deal today, and I'm gonna introduce you!
[40]

Examine - Eric: Quiet as a church on Super Bowl Sunday.
Examine - Kelly: Wow, nice big smile.
Examine - Around: Seems to be surrounded.

Talk - Eric:
Is this where the deal is going down today?
to the big man.
Yeah.

Or maybe not, Mr. Detective. Your game is up. Nick's not coming anywhere near this place. Why would he?
What are you talking about?
No one could ever expect this at all

I'm such a bad girl for tricking you, Law. Forgive me?
But you said you were DEA! How can you...
Oh, I am. Well, sometimes. Where is the line, really?
A double agent?!
I prefer to think myself as a female enterpreneur. I make bank by selling confidential DEA information to Eric here.
She's not lyin', either. The girl's got some wicked game.
And it looks like Law here got caught in the middle of it. Poor boy.

Oh, you're not doing anything but dying. We got Sam the same way.
You bitch.
Guilty as charged. This one is much smarter than his old partner.

Law's in a pickle, and he's probably not going to make it by himself. Sarah, where are you when we need you the most?

Wow, that must have been a boring six months.

: Month 5: I'm still not allowed to be seen by Law. We're still waiting to find out if he is a traitor... I've run out of books to read.

Nah, the timeskip doesn't happen if Kelly doesn't die, so presumably she tells Eric right after they go back to the base.

I've been kinda busy with college, sorry for slowing down :shobon:

---

Welcome to 1000 Ways To Die In Miami! This update covers both versions of the last update.

Law, instead of charging into the warehouse, smashes the car into barrels and crates.

Don't drink and drive
This holiday season

Law wants to kill the Cuban Connection gangsters, but he mistook his gun for the SWAT prop and kept shooting blanks.

Sara told you there are too many to handle yourself, Law. You've only got yourself to blame :colbert:

Law decides to be the quickest gun in Miami.

Ungh!
Every man eventually meets the limit of their ability. Consider yours met.

Goes about as fine as you might have expected.

Law decides to protect his newly-discovered potential love interest.

Oh, yeah. I guess I should have known that after the last performance.
So when can I shake his hand? You promised, remember?

(A little more... I need to keep pushing. I'm so close.) The weak don't survive, right? I'm ready to meet Nick.
After tonight's delivery to...
I did the job you asked me to do already. You promised.
Jack...
I've earned it. You know it.
You've earned this...

Exactly. What. The. Hell? You're trying too hard, Jack. And I've learned that when somebody presses this hard... they die.
Derek somehow keeps finding a way to be an example long after his death.

Law throws away months of covert operations and patience to reach for vengeance while it lingers within his grasp.

Law, what are you doing? We don't have a connection between Nick and the drug transaction yet! If you shoot him now you'll be a murderer!
Then I guess we'll be even. They made the first kill.

Shut your smart mouth.

I think that one might count as success, though. Well, tune in next time for the grand finale of Chapter 1!

I did mean in the other timeline... although, Kelly still knows he's a cop in that one, so they must be stringing him along for laughs.

Also, don't worry about slowing down, your LP is worth waiting for updates. :peanut:
