Last time, Law was under fire from Kelly and Eric. It's time for Sara to save him. Because that's what partners do.

A nice touch is that the top screen has been missing Law's data ever since he left Sara. Not even "whereabouts unknown", just not there.

Talk - Chief Gibson:

Move:

Those lines are leftovers from a bad ending obtainable in this part. You can't talk to Gibson and actually progress in the game.

Cell Phone - Law:

Law's in danger, we need to get to him immediately! But his transmitter is off and I don't know where he is...
What are you doing, Sara?

Had to meet with Chief Gibson. What do you mean "trying to say Law"?
Law is in danger. His cover has been blown by the Miami Syndicate. They know he's law enforcement, but he doesn't know.
You can't just tell him via the wireless transmitter?

If I can figure out where he is, I can save him.
Use his PDA.
PDA? All his electronics are off.
The beacon on is still active as long as the battery is in it.
Even if it's turned off?
Yes. It's a secret feature that's been implemented in most PDAs now. We can track almost anyone at their time, even if they're off. Sounds like it may help save your partner's life, so use it.
Larry skulks off.
I still can't believe that feature is in all our PDAs. But I suppose it's an effective way to find double agents as well. And this time it might even save Law's life.
Thank god this is just a game, I can't imagine the government spying on its citizens in real life

Check MS Hideout: (There's no time to second-guess this decision. I need to find Law!)
Ping PDA: (If I use the PDA beacon, I can find Law. There's not time to waste!)

We didn't get the pep talk from Larry for nothing. Let's ping!

Also, this is apparently a minigame. As I said, Sara's gameplay is mostly trash.

:geno:

She is way more capable of doing her job, though.

I was just about to kick their asses.
We saved you the trouble.
Sara, I... I'm sorry I was...
No time for apologies. Where are Kelly and Eric?

You drive, I'll shoot. We have to stop them from getting away!
Badass.
Driving and shooting. My perfect date.
I understand.

Minigame time. This time, Sara shoots the car while Law swerves like an idiot. It's harder than it sounds, mostly because he can't drive in a straight line for longer than a second.

No thanks to you, Law.

We need a medic right away! We have to ask them about Nick before...

The explosion was too intense...
I was hoping...
It would have been better if we were able to capture them. I guess you got what you wanted, though: revenge.

Feels like I didn't do it right.
A lesson is learned.
Because you're still law enforcement at the core. Revenge doesn't suit you.
Is that a compliment, Agent Starling?
A mistake, I assure you.

I'm not going to lie, it infuriated me that you jeopardized the case. But I won't be putting it in the report... because we're partners.

A partnership, though reluctantly, forged.

Oooh, I thought this might be one long case split into chapters. This will be fun. I'm trying to think if this is going to stay mostly serious or get weird.

Will Law and Sara have to solve a murder at a furry con?

Last update before the next case, and it's dying montage time again. Let's go to the MS hideout instead of relying on technology.

Even if Law isn't there, I might find a clue as to where he is. But it's probably too dangerous to go alone. I need help.

Talk - Chief Gibson:
Chief Gibson! Detective Martin is in danger!

No, this is serious. His cover is blown and he doesn't know it!
That fool. This might be the time his reckless ways catch up with him.
He has turned off his transmitter so I can't warn him. I think the best way to find him is to go to the MS Hideout.
And you think the Syndicate hideout is the place to find him?
I don't know for sure, but maybe at least I can find a clue. If he's killed, the investigation will also be set back years.
Law is like a son to me. And just as infuriating sometimes, too. I don't want to see his judgment end his life, either. Are you asking me to send a support squad to the MS hideout?
Yes, I need backup!
It'll take some time to get them together.
Fine, thank you. I can't wait. Send them when they're ready.
Going ahead alone isn't wise.
I know that, but there's no choice with Law's life on the line.

Talk - Chief Gibson:
I'm off. I'll let you handle the organization.
Don't worry about me. You need to be careful heading into their base.

Better save Law then. To the hideout!

...!?

So, there was a do-gooder coming to save the day.
You knew?
Why wouldn't I? My communication network is everywhere.
A double agent.
Who said blondes were stupid? You figured it out, girlfriend!

Girl fight!: (If I don't make the first move I'm going to be killed.)
Observe: (I just need to hold out until Chief Gibson sends in reinforcements.)

Surely Gibson will help us in time, right?

Looks like it's time to move you to another location.
...
You wanted to see Law, didn't you? Now you'll get your wish!

Right here, but the poor man went and died on me.
No... Law...
Of course, I think you're much smarter than he was. And more... useful.
What do you want from me?
Well, I'm quite impressed with your lineage. To have a father in the White House is quite impressive.
What? :pirate:
...?! What do you intend to do?
Something impressive... Even by your standards.
Some sweet foreshadowing just for you guys.

What if we turn the gun on Kelly?
(...NOW!)

Drop... the... gun...
So there's a little fire behind that business attire.
Where's Law. TELL ME!

What's so funny?
It's just a shame your power play is a bust.
...!?

(Oh, no...)
Too bad for you.
...

break through...

Well, it wasn't too great of an idea anyway.

Sara didn't manage to type Law's number in time.
Seriously, can't I get the terminal number 0598129643 to input correctly?
I need to work faster...

Where is he? Law!!
She paid for it with a mental breakdown.

Sara couldn't concentrate on shooting the bad guys thanks to a badly driving prick. Thanks, Law!

Sara, what's wrong? Sara? Are you okay?
She literally got shot to death next to you, Law.

Welcome back! Last time we made a pretty big hole in the MS structure by accidentally killing Kelly and Eric.

(Still, I need to find some way to take the Syndicate down...)

You better not include the whole truth in this report, Sara

Grab Gun: (If they're here for revenge, it's MY revenge they'll get instead.)
Hide: (Sounds like there's too many of them. I need to watch and wait.)

Let's hide, if only because the image of Law skulking behind the couch is funny to me. This is actually the first non-choice. None of them result in a game over, they just make some dialogue play out differently. The great part is, it actually changes the whole exchange, not just two lines up to a certain point. It's the simplest thing, but it really makes the game seem more complete.
(What are those Syndicate guys doing in my apartment? I should just call for Miami PD backup, but that'll take too long.)

Observational skills are in order, Detective Martin.
I don't need a smartass this early. It's been a long night. I almost called the Miami PD to smoke you out!
Well, at least they would have been grateful for the breakfast I made. Didn't you SMELL the food I was cooking for you?
I was too busy running through possible criminal scenarios...
Well put your brain in neutral and just enjoy the breakfast I made.
Jess, this isn't fun and games.
But I made your favorite, bacon and eggs - over easy!
I appreciate it, Jess, I really do, but there's some stuff...
Yeah, yeah. Tell me about it while you're eating.
Well okay, but I really need to tell you some important things...

Paranoid Law posted:

I let myself in to say hi. Is that not cool anymore?
No, it's just that there's a case and... I might be a target...
Right... a violent criminal that breaks in and cooks for you. Didn't you at least SMELL breakfast cooking, Mr. Detective
Well, when say put it like that... it sounds kinda silly.
No, it sounds DUMB. Now get to the table and eat. You're delirious.
Jess, this is serious. Listen to me!
Just as soon as you sit DOWN.
Jess, there's something I have to tell you...

Flashback time!

You bitch.
Guilty as charged. This one is much smarter than his old partner.

And that's it, apparently.

Anyway, new case means new descriptions of some objects!

Examine - Jessica: Casting a strange look this way.
Examine - Around: No bugging devices are found.
Examine - Desk: An old cup of coffee sits there.
Examine - Poster: Nice 80's vintage car in the picture.
Examine - Magazine on Desk: The covers on these magazines always feature hot chicks.
Examine - Photo: A photo of Law and Sam.
Examine - Sideboard: A .45 caliber pistol is kept in it's holter.
Examine - Plants: Bird of Paradise, well, cared for.

On the second though, forget it, Jess. I'm off to work.

Oh well. So here's the truth.

Talk - Jessica:

Oh, uh... nothing.
What's with the scowl on your face, then? Is my cooking that bad?
I... just don't feel like eating all of a sudden. Just coffee for me.
Law, I spent all this time making breakfast for you!
Jess, I don't feel hungry. I have a lot going on in my head.
Honestly, Law, I don't know why I bother. You're impossible.
I'm better with coffee...

She looks like a muppet when she smiles.

Somehow I doubt that, but what do I have to lose? One coffee, coming up.
You're the best.

Jess goes to kitchen, so Law could mumble to himself.

The Miami Syndicate is bruised but still intact - this isn't over yet. Once it's all over, I'll tell you all about it.

I'll take your word for it.
I need to get to work, and I have to stop back home to get something. If I don't leave now, I'll be late again, and that's a bad thing.

She goes away...
Jess...

Only to come back a second later.
Mmmm?
Thanks... and take care. It's a big, bad world out there.
I KNOW that, silly. I'm not as defenseless as I look!

Now then, what to do? Try to repair the deep cover operation? No... I should gather more information on the Syndicate, first...

Choosing Law dumps us back in his house. Let's move it.

You'd think it would be harder to knock out a guy who can take fifty bullets to the chest.

Hey man, move it!
Unghh...

Oh Christ, not him again.

Wait... y... you're the CC dealer I met yesterday.
Yeah. You shoved a gun in Happy's face for major buzzkill.

Ha ha ha... Look at yourself!
So what is this... some kind of loser clubhouse for dopeheads?

Well, Law's pissing off some important dudes. Let's take a look around before acting tough again.

Examine - Antonio: He's looking at me with stone-cold eyes.
Examine - Happy: The way he's looking at me makes me feel decidedly un-happy.
Examine - Around: Surrounded by CC thugs.
Examine - Backroom Door: Empty cardboard liquor bottles are all over the ground.
Examine - Counter: Liquor bottles are stacked side-by-side.
Examine - Poster: It's some kind of old poster for a movie called EL MANTO.

Move:

One of the few times where the black box narration isn't voiced by the character's inner voice. Weird!

Cell Phone:

Talk - Happy:
Are you happy?
Oh no, not this again. (If he keeps up this happy nonsense, I'll kill him for sure.)
Mmm? What's wrong? Your eyes don't look happy!

Talk - Antonio:

Oh, I assure you I am not the boss. I am Antonio, a member of the Cuban Connection, but not your main worry.
Antonio?
But let's get down to the meat of this matter... I know you are Jack Spencer from the Miami Syndicate.
...
And I know you were rude enough to steal from me yesterday. You took five cases in all.
...

Law gets hit and twitches. You've already seen how it looks so there's no reason to make another gif.

So it occured to me that you're probably a very reasonable guy. And, I thought I should just ask you where they were.

And again...
Gwahhh...
Your silence is distressing to me, Mr. Spencer. I suggest you talk. Those cases have more value than your life to me.
You dope dealers are all the same, all church time and family values.
Happy, perhaps our friend needs a little more persuasion...

And again! Just imagine he gets drubbed every time before he utters an onomatopoeia.

Unghh...
Gwah...
Ready to tell us where the cases are?
You don't need those drugs. Just import some... more.
You're bringing Happy down, man.

Those cases belong to us and have no value for anyone else.
Yeah, right.
It doesn't matter what you think. You only need to tell us where they are.
I... don't know.
Jack, I really think our relationship is getting off to a rocky start. If you keep this up, I'm afraid you leave me no choice... You do have a lady friend who likes to visit you, yes?
...?!
I see from your expression I have made a connection!

A Cuban Connection, even

Thread carefully here, Antonio.
You are not in the position to be giving orders, Jack.
Leave her alone!
So you do have a soft spot for... Jessica, is it?
You lay a finger on her and I'll tear you apart.
Rather than making idle threats, why not tell us where the cases are? It's a much easier path, and we'll all be more civilized. I am a reasonable man, Jack. I just need to meet me halfway.
When you say it like that, how can I refuse?
Ah, at last - the voice of reason.
I've hidden the cases. No one will find them without me.
Of course. Why would I think any less of you?
Let me go, and I'll retrieve them for you. You're not getting the information with me stuck here. I'm not stupid.
...
What's the problem? I've agreed to get the cases. Untie me.

Happy... the ropes...
You better not be tricking Mr. Antonio...

He's gone!

I need to get over to Jessica's place before anything happens. But I'm so far... Antonio's posse might already be there...

Call Sara: (There's no way I can get there in time by myself. I need help.)
Hurry to Jess: (I promised I'd protect Jess, so nothing's gonna stop me!)

This one's kind of obvious. We're not gonna make it there before Antonio, so Sara's our only chance! But first...

Examine - Around: Looks like no one is chasing me.

Move:

Cell Phone - Gibson:

Get that old fart out.

Cell Phone - Jessica:

drat it! I need to find a way to rescue Jessica.

Cell Phone - Sara:

Sara, I need you to send officers over to the address I'm giving you. The woman at this address needs police protection right away.
What's wrong?
The Cuban Connection has targeted her for abduction or murder.
The Cuban Connection?
Yes, YES! They're after Jessica!
What?! Why do they...
Look, there's no time for a briefing. Get some officers over there NOW!
Yes, yes... right. What's her address?
32 Jefferson Street, Room 203. There's no time to waste... HURRY!
I'm on it.
I'll do what I can from here.

Go to Jessica's: (I can't just sit here and wait for the news. I have to get over there!)
Call Jessica: (I need to call and warn her not to let anyone in!)

This one though, less so. None of those choices will lead to an actual bad end, but one of them will definitely be a better one. So let's just watch Law run through the city like an idiot because 66% of cars in the game have been destroyed.
I need to try to get over there as fast as possible.

Cell Phone - Sara:
The arrangements are complete.

Cell Phone - Jessica:
No one has answered the phone.
Jessica, don't get out!

Cell Phone - Gibson:
No one has answered the phone.
What's keeping you, old fart!

Move - Anywhere But Jessica's Apartment:
No time to stop any other place.

Law's so stressed that he forgot how to speak properly! Well, let's go there already.

Examine - Around: Curious onlookers are beginning to gather.
Examine - Apartment Window: No signs of tampering are visible.
Examine - Apartment Door: The door doesn't seem to be forced open.
Examine - Tree: There's nothing strange about it.
Examine - Road: No visible tire tracks of a car leaving hastily.
Examine - Radio: The radio is blaring loudly.

Move - Anywhere But Inside:
Making sure Jessica's safe is my top priority.

Move - Enter:

So what's going on? Is Jess safe?
I rang the doorbell, but there's been no response yet.
What?!
The door was unlocked, and I was about to enter the premises.

Got it.

No one's here...
Jessica! drat it, she's gone.

Antonio!
I do make a lasting impression, do I not?
What have you done with her?
You should worry about what I have yet to do to her, instead.
That better be an idle threat or you'll pay for it with your life.
I do not think you're in position to enjoy a successful negotiation. Perhaps you should concentrate on getting my cases back for me.
The cases for Jess?
All five of them, no less - and no tricks. It's a straight-up deal. The exchange will happen under the freeway overpass on West Street.
Fine. But I need some time to get the cases.
I'm a reasonable man. Of course I will give you time to retrieve them. You have one hour. Meet us with no cops in tow. If we even suspect cops... she dies.
This is impossible! I have to try and warn Jess!

I'm sure Antonio will just let her pick up the phone. Oh well, let's just wrap up our business here and find Sara.

Examine - Around: No traces of ransacking are visible in the living room.
Examine - Door: The entry door doesn't seem to have been forced open.
Examine - Archway: The archway to the bedroom isn't gouged or nicked.
Examine - Window: The window isn't broken.
Examine - Back Room: Nothing there.
Examine - Bedroom: Looks neat as a pin. There wasn't a struggle there.

Cell Phone - Sara:
I just arrived at the Miami PD.
The exchange of Jessica for the cases has been set!
What?!
I'll give you all the details when I get there.

Cell Phone - Sara:
I'll be waiting. Get over here right away.
Okay. In the meantime, I need you to gather some information...

Cell Phone - Jessica:
I can't get through!

Cell Phone - Gibson:
Agent Starling is irritated. Any progress in the case?

I don't have time for a briefing. Gotta run!

Cell Phone - Antonio:
I can't get through!
If anything happens to Jessica... I won't rest until I destroy the one responsible with my own hands.

Back outside for some missed things...

Examine - Around: No evidence linked to the criminal can be found.
Examine - Door: There's no trace of forced entry.

Talk - Police Officer:

Contact me as soon as any information is available.
Roger. I'll make the arrangements by radio right away.
Don't use the radio, use a cell phone for better security.

Talk - Police Officer:
Roger. I'll get right on that.
I'll be back at the Miami PD soon. Contact me the second there's any new information.

The version of Law who wanted to meet Sara without talking to anyone in the meantime posted:

Move - Miami FBI - Enter - Main Floor:

Talk - Daniel:

Where's Sara Starling?
She left for Miami PD a few minutes ago.
Got it, thanks.

Talk - Daniel:
You want me to give her a call and tell her you're looking for her?
Nah, I'll handle it, thanks.

Move - Miami PD - Enter - Investigation HQ:

Yeah, well, if we don't come up with those cases, it's gonna get worse.
Since Eric has them now, how do you plan to get them back?

...by visiting the hideout when Al's out and picking them up? It's not like Eric will oppose you, being dead and all.

No time to do this right. I'm gonna have to fake it 'til I make it. I'm gonna mock up some cases that look the same and put drugs in them.
Right! We can put fake drugs in the cases.
I don't think Antonio will fall for false drugs.
We can send a SWAT team to watch and come in before he discovers it. If we do it right, he'll never know what happened.
Risky. He said if he suspects the involvement of police, Jess dies. I swore to Sam that I'd protect her. I can't risk it.
There aren't any other options on the tight timeline he's given us. We don't have a warehouse full of drugs to draw on.
drat it. There has to be a way!

Steve...
I hear you're in a deep cover operation right now.
Yeah, it's not going so well right now.
Well watch yourself, it's dangerous out there.
You, too.

Wait. You're in evidence storage now?
Yeah, it's boring, but it's safe, and I want to be around for my girl.
Sounds reasonable.

I've known him for a long time. He left undercover to take a safer job working in evidence storage.

Reminder: Law didn't know that thirty seconds ago.

I know that look. What are you thinking, Law?
I just figured out where to get the drugs I need for the cases!
Wait a minute. I don't like where this is headed.
It's perfect, Sara! I can borrow what we need from the evidence storage!
Except for the small fact that what you're proposing is ILLEGAL.
All in the service of the greater good... And saving Jessica.
Law, that's not the way...
Then what is? Our time is running out!
We can't break the law!
Fine. You stay here nice and legal-like, and I'll take care of this.

Whew, that was longer than I expected.

This time, Law once again decided to do everything by himself.

I just hope she can hold on until I get there...

Law!
Law? So our Jack Spencer is a man of many mysteries, it seems. Looks like he has another identity in law enforcement.
(drat. There goes that alias.) Let Jessica go!
Well, well... Law, is it? that may have worked before... but now that I know you're a cop, it's out of the question.
Law, help me!
Look, let her go and we'll settle this man to man.
I'm afraid that's out of the question without the cases you stole.
Fine. You'll get your cases back. Just let her go.
You're so unreasonable for a cop. But that is a fair trade.
The girl for the cases, it's so simple.
I'm taking her now, and then you get your cases!
Maybe NOT!

Jess... ica...

...
You were very bossy. I think I don't like that so much.
Jess...
Goodbye, Detective Martin...

I really like how Antonio deduced Law's a cop only by his name. I guess a name like "Law" doesn't leave much place for other careers.

And this is the second rout the previous chapter could've played out. Law warned Jess to not open the world.

Hey, Law. You don't have to apologize for not eating my break...
Jessica, where are you now?!
I'm leaving my apartment. Why are you shouting, Law? What's wrong?
Get back in your house and lock the door - now!
What? Why?!
You're in danger. You need to get inside until I can get there.

There's no time to explain the whole thing. Just trust me on this! There are police on the way to your apartment, and I'll be there soon. You need to stay inside with all the doors and windows locked until then.
O... okay, Law.
This is all my fault, but I'm going to make it right. Don't worry.
Just get here as fast as you can.
I'll be there before you know it, just sit tight.
After what you've told me, I'm not going anywhere!

Law, I've sent the officers. They should be at Jessica's place soon.
Good. I told her to wait inside with the doors and windows locked.
Why is the CC after her? It makes no sense at all...
They're after ME. She's just a pawn for them to get what they want.
Is this about the cases you took from their warehouse?
Bingo.
But you already gave them to...
You and I know that Eric has them now, but THEY don't know that. Poor bastards think I still have them and they are MAD.
So Jessica's the leverage to get you to return the cases.
Yeah. They've apparently cased my place and found out about her.
I'll be waiting for the news. Let me know what happens when you get there.
Will do.

Police.
Can you show me your badge, please?
Of course, here.

Here, let me open the door to let you in...

Yes.
I'm patrol officer Greenwell of the Miami PD. I'm here to protect you.

I bet you didn't think he actually had a name, huh? :smug:

Thank you SO much.
We need to get you to the station where it's safer for you.
But... Law said to stay here until he got here.
This isn't safe. You'll be dafer at the station. I'll inform Law.
Well... okay...
This way, miss...

:ohdear:

Examine - Around: It's eerily silent.
Examine - Patrol Car:
There's a patrol car. Looks like they made it in time.

No, no, no! He's DEAD! This can't be happening!

Jessica? Where are you?!

You bastard!
Now, now. We hardly know each other. Is that any sort of greeting?
What have you done with Jess?
Oh, now that IS a most excellent question.
If you harm her, I'll skin you alive!
Jack, Jack, Jack. Surely you know the benefit of keeping your cool. This is a negotiation, after all. My cases for your chiquita.
And you're personally guaranteeing her safe return for the cases?
Of course, of course. I am not one to waste time playing games. Bring all five cases to West street under the freeway.
I need time. I can't get them all right away.
I'm a generous man, Mr. Spencer. You have one hour. If we detect, or even suspect police involvement, the girl dies.

He hangs up, while Law kicks the car. It's mostly conveyed by sound.
drat. What am I going to do now?!

Cell Phone - Gibson:

An officer was killed and Jessica was abducted! Send officers to the scene at 32 Jefferson Street, apt 203.
Got it. I'll get this underway.
I'm heading over there now. Chief, they may be monitoring. Don't use the radio!
Right. I'll make arrangements by phone.

Cell Phone - Gibson:

Move - Miami PD - Enter - Investigation HQ:
Talk - Homicide Detective:

Yeah, poor bastard.
It wasn't your fault, Law. You know that, right? Go take care of rescuing Jessica. I'll do the paperwork on Greenwell.
Thanks, man.

Talk - Homicide Detective:
We're gonna catch the guy that did this. You know that, right?
I know.

Talk - Sara:

Law, we've got a problem. The officer we sent over to Jessica's apartment isn't answering.

:downs:

He's been killed, Sara. I saw him on the way in.
What?!!
He's dead and Jess has been kidnapped by the CC.
This is going from bad to worse. Have they contacted you?
Yes. They want to trade Jessica for the five cases I took. The exchange point is on West street beneath the overpass. Only problem is, I don't have the damned cases...
I still can't believe Jessica was kidnapped.
Yeah, well, if we don't come up with those cases, it's gonna get worse.

And from here it follows the same way. Killing Greenwell on the first go would probably be more tense but oh well. I like him, even if he's a non-character.

Jess has been kidnapped by Antonio, and we need to procure the drugs we stole from him to save her! Sara hasn't grasped the permanency of death so she's unable to help us.
what will Law do?

Certainly not snitch on his partner. Thanks, Sara.

Yeah, I'm in a rush. I need you to get the stuff we talked about NOW!
What is this, an emergency?
Yes. I need five cases full of drugs.

What? You know I haven't got that! This is an EMERGENCY, remember?
Law, you and I both know that this isn't happening without a permit. You need approval from the top to do something like this. Just get the authorization and I can release what you want.
Dammit!

...welp, Law can now be a criminal. Let's just try asking him politely again.

Examine - Around: Steve is working quietly.
Examine - Behind Bars: There are mountains of evidence in there!
Examine - Steve: He seems to be buried in a mountain of boring paperwork.

Talk - Steve:

I know you heard me the first time. I NEED the authorization form.
...

We've went through denial (recall finding the dead officer), and anger.

Use Force - Steve:

Time for bargaining.

If this deal blows up because you didn't cooperate, you'll be...
Law, don't even try it. You're a terrible liar. Chief Gibson knows the procedure as well. He'd give you a permit.

Steve, you're breaking my heart.

Use Force - Steve:

My time is running out. Just load up what I need for the case.
Law, you've lost it. You're putting an end to your career right here.
Maybe, maybe not. I've got a life to save, and I need this to do it.
Think about what you're doing, man. Just put that away and it's our secret. I won't tell anyone. If you keep this up, you know I'm going to have to take you down.
This is getting really old, Steven. I'm tired of the talking.

Let's give him one last chance.
Talk - Steve:

Depression.

Wait. You mean Sam's sister Jessica?
That's what I've been trying to tell you! The CC wants to trade for her!
Oh my god...
Looks Steve, I know what the procedure is. There just isn't time. I need your help to get this done, then I'll face the consequences.
...
Please man... ya gotta...

Thank you...
This is Chief's order, right... I can't go against the Chief.

Not necessary. I'm just following Chief's order, uh... right?
I'd make a promise to behave if I didn't know I'd break it tomorrow.
I don't want you to change who you are. Just get this done.

No acceptance though. ...thanks, Steve. We owe you one. :unsmith:

Talk - Steve:
Law, you need to find some way to rescue Jessica before...
Don't worry about that. Failure is not an option. Thanks, Steve.
I hope this works. There's no other option since Jessica's life is in danger. Be careful out there, Law.
I will.

Write up a report about it. You might even get a gold star!

Sorry for the huge delay! I blame the holiday season.

---

Last time Law said 'gently caress the concept my parents based my name on' and went off to trade some drugs for Jessica's life. So let's hang around with Sara.

Perhaps Larry? No, I should tell Chief Gibson directly.

Move - Anywhere but Enter:

Move - Enter - Investigation HQ

Examine - Chief Gibson: He's giving instructions to another police officer.
Examine - Homicide Detective: He's jotting something down.
Examine - Law's Desk: There's a lack of memos out for prying eyes to see.
Examine - Michael's Desk: Michael isn't at his desk.
Examine - Olajuwon's Desk: Olajuwon isn't at his desk.

Talk - Chief Gibson:

Sure, what is it?
Unfortunately, I must inform you of illegal activity in your department.
Illegal activity?

Rat Law Out: (Illegal is illegal, even if it is Law. I have to tell everything.)
Keep Silent: (Law had a good reason to do what he did. I need to help him.)

Like I would skip any occasion to make everyone in this game a huge jerk!

Yes, sir. The approach he's taken in the investigation is reckless. He's taken a course of action with no regard for the law.
Wouldn't be the first time. He's a lone wolf. But, he gets results.
So, you're saying...

The music playing here is this game's equivalent of Deadly Premonition's sad sax. Really wish I could share it.
I'm not saying anything except that he always tries harder than anyone.
Even if he breaks the law to...
Officers on an investigation, and especially those undercover... Sometimes are presented with difficult split-second choices. They have to decide what course of action serves the public interest.
...
And in that moment, a choice must be made... often times alone. The officer must sometimes break the law to uphold it.

Life is contradictory, Sara. This job is not a magical exception. When people are suffering and you can protect and serve, you do it.
...
I understand this because Law is a lot like I was at that age.
I would never have guessed. You're so much more...
...healthy? Heh! I wasn't always this full-figured. But when I was his age, I was just as reckless in administering law.

I believe that illegal actions without approval should be punished.
Oh, I agree, Agent Starling. I'm just saying I understand Law.
Then I'm going to make sure I come back here with Detective Martin.

The world in which Sara is more willing to take the blame posted:

Uh-oh. This "nothing" sounds like Law.
IT's really nothing, I'm just very stressed with the case and...
Agent Starling, I can see it all over your face. You're not the lying type.
See?
Law looked up to Sam like a brother- no, it was more than even that. Sam's murder was like Law's soul being murdered. He hasn't recovered. And, in the quest to set things right in this case, he's taken shortcuts. His devotion to the ones he cares about is his Achilles heel.
I know what you're talking about...
I would bet that this is about Law cutting a corner, and I need to know.
Well he IS my partner, and I wouldn't be a very good one if I told you. I want him to respect my devotion to him AND the job...
In this case, compromise won't do the trick. Believe me, I've been there.
You're right. He needs boundaries. As his partner, I'm going to help.
Now you're getting it... don't let the man steamroll you!
I know what I have to do. I'm bringing him back here to face the music!
...??
If he ends up getting killed he won't pay the price for what he did!
Law's fortunate to have a partner like you in his corner.

Law how did you manage to fail a trade.
I'm glad you feel this way. Somehow I don't think he'll feel like that.
(Okay, the exchange was happening under the freeway on West Street.)

Well let's leg it then! Also I'm really glad you've came around to your senses. :3:
Move - Exit - Parking Lot

That's...

You don't want to die a lying coward, do you?
Well, when you put it that way... Look, I have the real cases.
I'm listening...
I didn't know you wanted the actual cases. I thought you wanted drugs.
You have used up the last of my goodwill, Jack. KILL HIM!

Observe More: (Law should be able to talk his way out of this, right?)
Use Cover Fire: (Law's going to be killed if I don't do something right now!)

Again an obvious choice, unless your rental time is up and want to pretend that's how it all ends.

An actual minigame? Hold still my beating heart
...okay, there's not much of it. Still, even a simple sniper shot is more fun than Law's shootouts, especially when they start chucking grenades.

:legion:

Looks like you have a guardian angel with a sniper rifle, friend.
One signal from me and it will be lights-out for you.

So spill it. Where's Jessica?
She's at a safe location, but you will not see her until I get the cases. All the cases for your sweet little chiquita.
I don't think you're in a position to negotiate, bud.
So blow my brains out, then... and you'll never see your chiquita again!
...
So what will it be, Jack Spencer?
I'll get you the cases and call you to make the exchange.
You are a smarter man than most, Jack Spencer. I'll contact you soon...

Yeah, thanks to you. You're a terror behind a gun, and I love it.
How did the rescue go? Where's Jessica?
Not so good. I learned they don't care about drugs. It's a cover.
Cover?
Yeah, there was something else in the cases I gave Eric.
Any idea what?
None. I just know that I have to get the original cases back now.

I'll trace the call.
You can do that in the field?
FBI, remember? I'll use the netbook in the car. Keep him talking.

Man, remember when netbooks were supposed to be a thing?

Check.

Impatience is not a good look on you. We're working on it.
You have 30 minutes to get them together.
30 minutes? Didn't we try the "short deadline" game with poor results?
30 minutes or your chiquita dies. No second chances this time.
You're the boss.
I want the five cases exactly as they were when you took them.
Okay, fine. But what's so special about the contents of the cases?
Curiosity will kill your sweet Jessica. Just bring the cases.
Wait!

drat. He hung up. Were you able to get a trace on his location, Sara?
Getting the results right now...
Tell me when you have the trace information. I'm going to try to catch them off-guard so I can rescue Jess.

It's time for the obligatory update in which the side chosen doesn't really matter a lot. So let's go with Sara, there are only so many ways to gripe about Jessica.

Examine - Around: Not a busy parking lot.
Examine - PC: Launching phone-tracing software.

Move:
I need to trace the cell call.

Talk - Law:

Okay, now I can determine the origin of the cell signal... I just need to trace the signal as it bounces from tower to tower.

Law drove away in the meantime. Anyway, minigame time! This one is surprisingly annoying.

The ring pulsates, highlighting the location of the next green spot. The problem is, it only stays on screen as long as the circle is present - so if it's near the disappearance radius, you've only got a split second to do it. And you can't tap it if it's not lit up.

Focus, focus...
That's it!
So far, so good...

What the hell, Hudson.

Did the trace work out?
Yes! I've got a lock on the approximate location.
And you're headed there, right?
You read my mind!

It came from that approximate area.
It's just an empty road. There's no one around.

They were probably calling from a moving vehicle.
Oh, this just gets better and better by the minute!
When you get the next call, we can trace it again...
There's no time for that. We only have 30 minutes, remember? I have no choice now but to get the real cases back from Eric.

Who is dead. I don't know if this is some Miami speech pattern but it's so weird.
It does seem to be the best option, given the time constraints.

MS Hideout: The MS hideout where I gave Eric the cases makes the most sense.
CC Warehouse: Maybe there are some more cases like the one I gave Eric here.

Now I might misremember something, but Antonio pretty clearly stressed he wanted Those Exact Cases.
You gave the cases to Eric at his hideout, did you not?
Yes, and his hideout is right around the corner. Time's almost up! I've gotta go.
The Syndicate is probably still hanging around their hideout. I'd better provide backup for Law or this could get ugly.
Hold on, Jessica. Just a little longer...

Next time: no cases yet!

Two bad endings this time. The first one is a pretty standard fail-the-minigame kind of thing.

I'm sorry, Law. It's a no-go.
drat it. We really needed that trace to work out!
Law...
This waiting is killing me...

But in actuality, it killed Jessica. The second one happens when you decide to go to the warehouse against your best judgement.

You're hoping there are more cases there like the ones you gave Eric?
That, or maybe they'll be keeping Jessica there and we can rescue her.
I hadn't thought of that, but it seems possible.
There's no time to waste. We need to get right over there.

Move - Warehouse 35

We should check out the premises carefully and quickly.
Right.

No signs of Jessica, either.
drat it. This was a baaad idea.

You don't say

Tell me the cases are ready, my friend.
Almost. I just need a little more time.
Are you playing games with me?
No, I just need a little more time.
You confuse generosity with weakness, my friend. This deal is concluded.
Wait!
Oh no! Law! Laaaaw!
Jessica!!
It's done.
Knock it off!

Interestingly, in this failed timeline Antonio didn't deduce Law was a cop from his name. Weird!

Well that's kind of disappointing. Who did that, though? Al?

Lucky for us there's no one to slow this down. Let's look for cases.
Okay.

Examine - Desk Map: No information about the location of the cases is on the map.
Examine - Wall Map: The map shows the territories of the Miami Syndicate.
Examine - Backroom Rack: The box doesn't have any cases in it.
Move: There must be more information to find around here, first!

Talk - Sara:
Hmm? Is that a cable...
No cases that I can see. How about you?
Nothing. They are nowhere to be found. I bet whoever ransacked this place took the cases.
If only we had some kind of small clue about where they went!
Wait! If I remember correctly... yes! It's right here!

What is it?

The security camera?
Yes, and it's still running. We need to review the captured footage.
What are we waiting for?
Nothing. We just need to find the PC used to store the video.
Gotcha. Let's make another pass and find that PC.

I'm sure Eric was using the PC the camera is connected to.

Examine - Around:
Hmm... what about that... Are the computers in that room?

Talk - Sara:
Law, I need to know about the PC room where Eric did the hacking.
Wait a minute. I'm sure it's...
Where is it, Law?
Just hold on, I'm checking it out.

:downs:

Move - PC Room:

Examine - Around: There are several PCs and monitors around the room.
Examine - Video Monitor: They are still running.
Examine - Poster: A poster of "Havana Vice", a popular action drama.
Examine - Map: It shows the drug sales channels.
Examine - Rack: The can contains Cuban coffee beans.
Examine - PC:

I hope Sara's faring better than I am.

Talk - Sara:
Sara! I found the PC!
I've never seen this control software before.

Looks are deceptive, Sara - the PC's actually a hackintosh
You can figure it out, though, right?
Yes, I have seen ones like this, but not this exact type. I believe it overwrites the video file every few hours. I hope the information we need is still on it.
Wait. Look here!
What is it?

No. Nononono.
It clearly shows someone carrying the cases out of the building!

We saw her EXPLODE.
I can't believe what I'm seeing! She's really alive!

I don't care about what's in them. I just want the money. You show up with cash and a ticket out of this place and they're yours.

You have a bright career in telemarketing. You're so friendly.
I grow tired of your jokes, Jack. Do you have the cases?
Aaaalmost. Just a little more time.
Only a little.
Jessica is still fine, right?
Yes, yes. Your chiquita is in good hands and well cared-for. I did get an interesting call just now, though. A woman called offering to sell me my five cases. Isn't that funny?

I'm sure you must have an explanation for that call, right, Jack?
Yeah, some idiot is trying to horn in on our deal. Happens al the time.
Really? The woman insists hers are genuine.

They all say that. Then you find their earlier photos, and then what? The basic trust is gone
Crazy people say crazy things. Crazy WOMEN say INSANE things.

:biotruths:
Perhaps, but I hope for your sake when I check them they are fake. She is bringing them over immediately.
You're wasting your time, Antonio.
If you do have the real cases, you have nothing to worry about. If her cases are phony, I'll kill her. However, if she does have the real cases, your dear Jessica is dead.
I've got it, Antonio. Stop saying that! I just need a little more time and I'll have all the cases for you.
I hope for your sake you do. Bring them to the exchange site and we'll see who is lying - in person.
Antonio? Antonio! drat it! He's gone.

Where would you like to make the exchange?

Our friend Kelly has contacted Antonio offering him the cases.
What?!
And she insists she has the real cases.
What did Antonio decide to do?
He's having Kelly bring the cases to him first. If the cases are fake, he kills her. If they're real, Jessica dies.
...!!
We don't have any choice but to intercept Kelly and get the cases.
We'll need to find out where she is first. I'll review the security footage and see if I can get any more clues.
Perfect. But, you need to hurry!

Can you identify the car by type?
Yes, but I'll have to access the traffic computers at the Miami PD.
Okay, you head out to the Miami PD. As soon as you have the info, call. I'll be driving around looking for Kelly, waiting for your instructions.
