it's a 5/8" piece of aluminum sheet stock I cut out, drilled and tapped a 1/4-20 threaded hole
what's it for? as cumt cleverly guessed, it's for holding something up or supporting an apparatus.
i have a micromanipulator, which can move a needle or probe in x, y, and z, with roughly 10 micron accuracy, and i had to mount it SIDEWAYS to fit it into a space where it could poke a probe into a device 
the micromanip wasn't meant to be mounted sideways, so what's supposde to be the side-side control is now the up-down control, and it's not weighted for that. this means if I don't hold it, it just drifts downward. I already broke a sensor this way 
so I made this thingy so I can put it underneath the manipulator arm, then thread the bolt upward until it touches, and it will hold the thing at the proper height
(here the thing can be seen under the micromanip, just down from the knobs in the pic)
